Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York The celebration of the centenary of the inauguration (on February 19, 1805) of the movement for free public schools in this city was suggested to the Board of Education in the spring of 1904, and, later, the preparation of a history of public education in New York. The Board unanimously approved both suggestions, and granted me a leave of absence for the purpose of writing this book. Although the time has been, of necessity, limited, no reasonable pains have been spared to secure accuracy. From the literary point of view this work makes no claim upon the reader. It is put forth as a fairly complete chronicle - a chronicle rather than a philosophic his tory of educational events in the city during the past one hundred years. To fill out the record, a preliminary chapter, relating to schools on Manhattan Island prior to 1805, precedes the his tory of the century now closing; and accounts of early schools in other parts of the city are also given. After my God and my religion, my country is the dearest object of my life! I love my country as dearly as any one else can. It is this love that makes my heart bleed when I call to mind the actual state of society in our country, and the principles that prevail everywhere. It is indeed but too true that we live in a most anti-Christian age; principles are disregarded, and iniquity is held in veneration. We see nothing but confusion in religion, in government, in the family circle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reorganization of the Public School System A little more than two decades ago Charles W. Eliot, convinced that the age at which the college graduate completes his course and begins supporting himself was too high, put the question, Can school programs be shortened and enriched? This query precipitated a discussion which, while ranging over the entire field of educational theory and practice, centered particularly upon the purpose and place of the common school, the high school, and the institutions of higher learning. This critical examination of the principal parts of the system has set in clearer light their characteristics and has led to the belief that a proper regard for the distinctive functions of each makes imperative a reorganization, or at least a readjustment, of the chief divisions of the system with respect to articulation, to internal organization, to grade span, and to defined purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Raison D'etre of the Public High School At this point we make the digressive remark that the efficiency of the American public school in training for citizenship is likely to be severely tested in the near future. Until within recent years, the immigration into our country was nearly homogeneous and largely sympathetic, and assimilation was comparatively easy. But recently there has appeared in our midst an element peculiarly alien in race and sympathies, or revolutionary in tendencies, and in numbers sufficiently large to disturb the calm posture of our social forms and the settled traditions of centuries. Against the subversive influence of this element our common school is our tower of strength, and civics as a branch of instruction assumes paramount importance. We come now directly to the public high school. How is its existence as a part of the social structure justified? How does it appear that society receives far more than an equivalent for its cost and is the gainer by it? The reader or hearer must not be tasked to understand what is read. He must be so familiar with all words and phrases in ordinary use, that he can call them properly, and attach the proper meaning to them without an effort. And every public school should furnish at least this measure of knowledge to every pupil that attends a sufficient length of time. To read the printed page, is first and most important but the pupil should also be. Taught to read writing readily - ran acquisition of no little value in the daily transactions of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in the City of New York: Its History, Condition, and Statistics; An Official Report to the Board of Education The school was long without a permanent home, being kept in such premises as could from time to time be obtain ed. The first efforts to build a school-house were made in 1642; but the financial difficulties of the colony were so pressing that the funds collected were again and again di verted to other uses, chiefly to defense against the Indians, so that the building was probably not erected till after the En glish occupation. Small private schools were also early es tablished for the children of the more wealthy portion of the community, but, even in these, no one could teach without a license from the civil and ecclesiastical authorities. Principals and teachers from various counties have been consulted. Valuable aid has been given by members of the faculty of George Peabody College for Teachers, the University of Tennessee, the State Normal Schools and by the supervisors of Davidson, Hamilton and Shelby counties. The aim has been to outline a course of study exible enough to meet the needs of the schools of the State. Much suggestive material is included and it is our hope that the teachers of the State will adapt it to the needs of their schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Schools and the War The following pages represent an endeavor to study the effects of the war upon schools in other countries and especi ally in the United States. The first four chapters deal with some specific problems of the public schools in connection with the war and were written when the great world conflict was still going on. They show the revolutionary changes which the public schools have made in adjusting themselves to the needs of the war, and suggest the unmistakable tendencies of our educational reconstruction which is yet to come. The last two chapters were written when the great war had just come to an end. In them the author has tried to show, in the light of the experience of many school systems in this country; how American public education can be reorganized in order to meet the needs of the coming new world order. It is the author's hope that they may be of some value to the general discussion of educational reform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
