Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to inventory the nonnative plant populations in each of the four NPS units between 2004 and 2006 at each of the NPS vegetation mapping plots and accuracy assessment points. This report details the results of the inventory for JOFL, which took place in 2004, and ALPO, which took place in 2005–2006. This inventory will contribute to a general understanding of the nonnative plant distributions, identify what species are most prevalent, and determine which vegetation associations are most impacted by nonnative plant species. This report draws attention to survey points and vegetative communities with particularly dense populations of nonnative plants and identifies them as targets for further study and management.

Book excerpt: Invasion by non-indigenous plants is widely considered to be a primary threat to species diversity and ecosystem function. Ecosystem changes resulting from these invasions may negatively impact native plant communities as a whole, as well as rare and endangered species. This report explores existing reports on rare plant locations in Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS), and Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway (SACN). No rare plant surveys were performed for this study. In addition, we performed invasive plant surveys on several species considered “target” species of concern at each park. Common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica L.) was the most commonly found invasive species. Of the 68 plots sampled in MISS, 53 had at least one invasive species present, and of the 136 plots sampled in SACN, 128 had at least one invasive species present. While this was not an exhaustive attempt to survey all invasive infestations, this study can serve as a template for future surveys and to emphasize the importance of continuity to allow compilation and comparison of data across parks.

Prevalent mainly in the western half of the prairie, sweetclover was established on at least 0.8 acres. Reed canarygrass and smooth brome each covered a minimum of 1 acre.

Written by prominent archaeologists with research experience in their respective topic areas, the chapters consider important issues of Virginia history and consider how the discipline of historic archaeology has addressed them and needs to address them . Changes in research strategy over time are discussed , and recommendations are made concerning the need to recognize the diverse and often differing roles and impacts that characterized the different regions of Virginia over the course of its historic past. Significant issues in Virginia history needing greater study are identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spearhead of Logistics is a narrative branch history of the U.S. Army's Transportation Corps, first published in 1994 for transportation personnel and reprinted in 2001 for the larger Army community. The Quartermaster Department coordinated transportation support for the Army until World War I revealed the need for a dedicated corps of specialists. The newly established Transportation Corps, however, lasted for only a few years. Its significant utility for coordinating military transportation became again transparent during World War II, and it was resurrected in mid-1942 to meet the unparalleled logistical demands of fighting in distant theaters. Finally becoming a permanent branch in 1950, the Transportation Corps continued to demonstrate its capability of rapidly supporting U.S. Army operations in global theaters over the next fifty years. With useful lessons of high-quality support that validate the necessity of adequate transportation in a viable national defense posture, it is an important resource for those now involved in military transportation and movement for ongoing expeditionary operations. This text should be useful to both officers and noncommissioned officers who can take examples from the past and apply the successful principles to future operations, thus ensuring a continuing legacy of Transportation excellence within Army operations. Additionally, military science students and military historians may be interested in this volume.
