Book excerpt: "This thesis presents a novel distributed fair scheduling and routing protocols for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Since fairness is an important issue when the wireless nodes access a shared channel, the proposed adaptive and distributed fair scheduling (ADFS) scheme allocates the channel bandwidth in proportion to the weight of the packet flows ... In addition, a novel optimized energy-delay routing (OEDR) protocol is presented, which generates routes based on delay, energy efficiency and state of the radio channel."--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: With modern communication networks continuing to grow in traffic, size, complexity, and variety, control systems are critical to ensure quality and effectively manage network traffic. Providing a thorough and authoritative introduction, Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks: Protocols, Performance, and Control examines the theory, architectures, and technologies needed to implement quality of service (QoS) in a wide variety of communication networks. Based on years of research and practical experience, this book examines the technical concepts underlying the design, implementation, research, and invention of both wired and wireless networks. The author builds a strong understanding of general concepts and common principles while also exploring issues that are specific to wired, cellular, wireless ad hoc, and sensor networks. Beginning with an overview of networks and QoS control, he systematically explores timely areas such as Lyapunov analysis, congestion control of high-speed networks, admission control based on hybrid system theory, distributed power control of various network types, link state routing using QoS parameters, and predictive congestion control. The book also provides a framework for implementing QoS control using mote hardware. Providing a deeply detailed yet conveniently practical guide to QoS implementation, Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks: Protocols, Performance, and Control is the perfect introduction for anyone new to the field as well as an ideal reference guide for seasoned network practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive yet easy coverage of ad hoc and sensor networks and fills the gap of existing literature in this growing field. It emphasizes that there is a major interdependence among various layers of the network protocol stack. Contrary to wired or even one-hop cellular networks, the lack of a fixed infrastructure, the inherent mobility, the wireless channel, and the underlying routing mechanism by ad hoc and sensor networks introduce a number of technological challenges that are difficult to address within the boundaries of a single protocol layer. All existing textbooks on the subject often focus on a specific aspect of the technology, and fail to provide critical insights on cross-layer interdependencies. To fully understand these intriguing networks, one need to grasp specific solutions individually, and also the many interdependencies and cross-layer interactions.

Book excerpt: Fair resource allocation is an effective strategy to provide optimal congestion control and scheduling in ad hoc wireless networks. We present distributed flow-based access schemes for slotted-time protocols, that guarantee proportional fairness in ad hoc wireless networks in the framework of nonlinear optimization. A proportionally fair medium access control algorithm maximizes the product over all flows of an appropriate flow-based performance function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In WSNs, communication takes place with the help of spatially distributedautonomoussensornodesequippedtosensespeci?cinformation. WSNs, especially the ones that have gained much popularity in the recent years, are, ty- cally, ad hoc in nature and they inherit many characteristics/features of wireless ad hoc networks such as the ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning, and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-con?gure without the involvement of a centralized network manager, router, access point, or a switch. These features help to set up WSNs fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a ?xed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief - erations. WSNs ?nd a variety of applications in both the military and the civilian population worldwide such as in cases of enemy intrusion in the battle?eld, object tracking, habitat monitoring, patient monitoring, ?re detection, and so on. Even though sensor networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to coverage and deployment, scalability, quality-of-service, size, computational power, energy ef?ciency, and security.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the world has witnessed an explosion in the development and deployment of new wireless network technologies. From cellular mobile telephony to the ubiquitous “WiFi networks in coffee-shops and airports, to the emerging WiMAX wireless broadband access networks, the menu of wireless access systems has become so comprehensive that wireline access to user devices may soon become a relic of the past. Wireless Networking serves as a one-stop view of cellular, WiFi, and WiMAX networks, as well as the emerging wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Rather than provide descriptive accounts of these technologies and standards, the book emphasizes conceptual perspectives on the modeling, analysis, design and optimization of such networks. Furthermore, the authors present wireless networking within the unifying framework of resource allocation, using simple abstractions of the underlying physical wireless communication. In short, Wireless Networking is an in-depth, exhaustive, and invaluable asset to anyone working in this rapidly evolving field. Goes beyond descriptive and qualitative treatments, by presenting the foundations underlying the various wireless networking technologies Provides abstractions, models and analyses of established and emerging wireless networks, thereby supplying the reader with a conceptual and quantitative treatment, thus ensuring longevity of the learning from this material Aids comprehension by including over 120 figures, four appendices on the mathematics of the various models, several inline exercises, and extensive problem sets at the end of each chapter

Book excerpt: The growth of the wireless networks has brought the issue of fair allocation of bandwidth among the users. Besides the issues in wired networks scheduling, wireless network has to take into account the characteristics of wireless channel, such as channel errors, location dependent contention, hidden or exposed stations, spatial channel reuse, and constraints in mobile hosts processing power and battery power. Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols define rules for orderly access to the shared medium and play a crucial role in the efficient and fair sharing of scarce wireless bandwidth. The IEEE standard 802.11 specifies the wireless LAN protocols for both infrastructure-based and ad-hoc networks. The previous studies in ad-hoc networks have assumed error free channel. However, in the wireless domain, a packet flow may experience location-dependent channel error and hence may not be able to complete transmission. The bursty channel errors can render the previous studies inapplicable. This study developed a fairness model for fair scheduling to deal with channel error in wireless ad-hoc networks. The throughput of the network is increased while the fairness is maintained in the model. The model was implemented in a distributed manner by localizing the global information required by the users of the networks. The simulation results showed the scheduling model achieves higher throughput and maintains the fairness at the same time.
