Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne (Seminar für Wirtschaftsinformatik und integrierte Informationssysteme), course: Hauptseminar, language: English, abstract: IT outsourcing (ITO) engagements have become one of the prevailing IT strategies. Moreover, agile software development (ASD) approaches tend to replace traditional, sequential methods. Injecting ASD into ITO leads to agile global or distributed outsourced development (AGOSD/ADOSD) projects characterized by using agile methods within distributed environments rising the challenge of facilitating coordination and collaboration between teams. Especially communication between client and external vendor became one of the major critical success factors. Consequently, my study examines communication practices within global IT projects. (1) I conducted a structured literature review to extend the list of communication practices provided by prior studies. (2) I consolidated and categorized them. (3) By having performed expert interviews, I deployed a ranking pointing out their practical relevance.

Book excerpt: It has always been argued that the two practices (distribution + agile) are actually incompatible. Introduction of agile methodologies in distributed field raises new challenges for development infrastructures to support collaboration and knowledge sharing in software development. Agile in a distributed setting does not mean step-by-step implementation of a particular agile methodology. It means collaboration among distributed teams to collate processes that follow agile principles and put together a methodology that works for them. This paper finds out different parameters for applicability of agile in distributed environment and proposes a new tool called Agile Information Radiator for better communication and knowledge sharing among distributed teams members. The empirical analysis validates some long-held beliefs, it also provides some surprises. The findings agree with many of the 12 principles of agile practices laid down in the agile manifesto. The other three auxiliary factors identified also support several manifesto practices. On the other hand, the study findings fail to support several common assumptions about agile success factors.

Book excerpt: This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Agile Software Development, XP 2020, which was planned to be held during June 8-12, 2020, at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference was postponed until an undetermined date. XP is the premier agile software development conference combining research and practice. It is a hybrid forum where agile researchers, academics, practitioners, thought leaders, coaches, and trainers get together to present and discuss their most recent innovations, research results, experiences, concerns, challenges, and trends. Following this history, for both researchers and seasoned practitioners XP 2020 provided an informal environment to network, share, and discover trends in Agile for the next 20 years. The 14 full and 2 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 37 submissions. They were organized in topical sections named: agile adoption; agile practices; large-scale agile; the business of agile; and agile and testing.

Book excerpt: With the evolvement of how software was built, how quickly the initial requirements change, how fast new technologies were appearing in tech world and evolving innovation needs of dynamic businesses, the software industry was feeling the need for a better way of managing projects. In 2002 a group of well-known software professionals got together to develop a set of industry guidelines now known as 'The Agile Manifesto' to help standardize this new way of managing projects which helped lay foundations to now widely used 'The Agile Project Management methodology'. While Agile was gaining momentum, the software development world saw the rise of another way of developing software which is known as outsourcing. Outsourcing in commonly referred form involves two or more geographically dispersed teams collaborating to develop the same software. However the fusion of agile methodology with outsourcing opens up new challenges which includes cultural, geographical and time barriers. This study tries to understand how well agile works with outsourced projects using a quantitative approach. The study will also look at how factors physical distance, time and culture impact success of agile in outsourced projects using a quantitative approach. Identifying factor/factors which has the biggest impact on success of agile in outsourced project will also help identify and prioritize which principles and practices need to be fixed first. Data collected through a questionnaire was quantitatively analysed using correlation, simple and multiple regression analysis. Data was sourced from industry professionals and practitioners who had enough experience with outsourced agile projects to be able to provide insights through a questionnaire. Correlation tests, simple regression and multiple regression analysis tests between time difference, culture difference, physical distance and success of agile methodology in outsourced projects were then carried out in a bid to understand the relationshi

Book excerpt: EVOLVING SOFTWARE PROCESSES The book provides basic building blocks of evolution in software processes, such as DevOps, scaling agile process in GSD, in order to lay a solid foundation for successful and sustainable future processes. One might argue that there are already many books that include descriptions of software processes. The answer is “yes, but.” Becoming acquainted with existing software processes is not enough. It is tremendously important to understand the evolution and advancement in software processes so that developers appropriately address the problems, applications, and environments to which they are applied. Providing basic knowledge for these important tasks is the main goal of this book. Industry is in search of software process management capabilities. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic emphasizes the industry’s need for software-specific process management capabilities. Most of today’s products and services are based to a significant degree on software and are the results of largescale development programs. The success of such programs heavily depends on process management capabilities, because they typically require the coordination of hundreds or thousands of developers across different disciplines. Additionally, software and system development are usually distributed across geographical, cultural and temporal boundaries, which make the process management activities more challenging in the current pandemic situation. This book presents an extremely comprehensive overview of the evolution in software processes and provides a platform for practitioners, researchers and students to discuss the studies used for managing aspects of the software process, including managerial, organizational, economic and technical. It provides an opportunity to present empirical evidence, as well as proposes new techniques, tools, frameworks and approaches to maximize the significance of software process management. Audience The book will be used by practitioners, researchers, software engineers, and those in software process management, DevOps, agile and global software development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the digital version of the printed book (Copyright © 2010). All software projects face the challenges of diverse distances -- temporal, geographical, cultural, lingual, political, historical, and more. Many forms of distance even affect developers in the same room. The goal of this book is to reconcile two mainstays of modern agility: the close collaboration agility relies on, and project teams distributed across different cities, countries, and continents. In Agile Software Development with Distributed Teams, Jutta Eckstein asserts that, in fact, agile methods and the constant communication they require are uniquely capable of solving the challenges of distributed projects. Agility is responsiveness to change -- in other words, agile practitioners maintain flexibility to accommodate changing circumstances and results. Iterative development serves the learning curve that global project teams must scale. This book is not about how to outsource and forget your problems. Rather, Eckstein details how to carefully select development partners and integrate efforts and processes to form a better product than any single contributor could deliver on his or her own. The author de-emphasizes templates and charts and favors topical discussion and exploration. Practitioners share experiences in their own words in short stories throughout the book. Eckstein trains readers to be change agents, to creatively apply the concepts in this book to form a customized distributed project plan for success. Topics include: Understanding Distributed Development The Productivity Myth Ensuring Conceptual Integrity Trust and Mutual Respect Iterations and Releases Using Features to Steer the Development Effort Team Velocity Virtual Retrospectives Dispersed Synchronization Introducing Agility to Global Projects and much more
