These three approaches are illustrated by the materials presented in the chapters of this volume. Chapters 1-5 emphasize conceptualization of developmental processes, describing systems principally from the standpoint of the physiologist. Structures and functions are defined with only occasional reference to specific molecular details. Chapters 6- 10 present the views of the biochemist, attempting to describe functions influ encing or regulating cellular behavior at the molecular level. And Chapters 11- 14 illustrate the approaches of the modem-day geneticist in his attempts to gain a detailed understanding of processes controlling gene expression. While it is possible to delineate these three major sections, each emphasizing a distinct experimental approach, it must be realized that the yield of knowledge increases exponentially with the number of experimental approaches available to the investigator. Information resulting from the application of each of these approaches must converge to give the same answers for anyone biological phenomenon in anyone experimental system. Greek anatomists were impressed by the ob servation that the pineal gland is an unpaired structure and they believed that it regulated the flow of thoughts. The philosopher Descartes proposed an important role for this organ in brain function. At the beginning of the 20th century experiments by several investi gators indicated that the pineal influenced sexual function and skin pigmentation and was also responsive to light signals. With the iso lation of melatonin from bovine pineal glands by Lerner and cowork ers in 1958 the modern era of pineal research was initiated. Within a few years the pathway for the biosynthesis of melatonin in the pineal was elucidated. Soon thereafter it was shown that the formation of melatonin was influenced by environmental lighting. Ana tomists found that the pineal was innervated by sympathetic nerves and that the gland had photoreceptor elements. It was also shown that the gonads were influenced by light via the pineal gland. Research on the pineal gland became of increasing interest to anatomists, bioche mists, pharmacologists and endocrinologists. With the expanding know ledge concerning the function of the pineal gland contributed by the wide variety of disciplines, it was thought that a study workshop would be timely.

That phrase has haunted the writing of this gap-filler and this preface may be considered an apologia. For a number of years I have found myself teaching various groups of students about cell locomotion and cell behaviour: sometimes science students specializing in cell or molecular biology, sometimes immunologists or pathologists who only wanted a broad background introduction. Those students who were enthusiastic, or who wished to appear so, asked for a general background text (to explain my lectures perhaps), and that is what I hope this book will provide. With luck, other scientists who have only a peripheral interest in cell movement will also find this a useful overview. The more proximate origin of the book was a special 'option' subject which I taught for two years to our Senior Honours Cell Biology students in Glasgow.

'' As I look over my work of the last 37 years, it becomes clear to me that it can be epitomized as a search for patterns. What usually began as a single minded devotion to in-depth analysis of one or a small number of variables always has led to questions of how the results might relate to the whole living unit, whether it is cell, tissue, or organism. For a number of years after my discovery in the vertebrate central nervous system of -y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the enzyme which forms it, L glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), and the identification of GABA as a major inhibitory neurotransmitter by others, I felt that my laboratory, largely bio chemical, was wandering in the wilderness of the complexities of the vertebrate CNS without definitively coming to terms with problems related to GABAergic transmitter functions and the roles of GABA neurons in information processing.
