Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some years ago a book reviewer, perhaps with Freudian honesty, remarked that the book in question 'filled a much needed gap in the literature'. That phrase has haunted the writing of this gap-filler and this preface may be considered an apologia. For a number of years I have found myself teaching various groups of students about cell locomotion and cell behaviour: sometimes science students specializing in cell or molecular biology, sometimes immunologists or pathologists who only wanted a broad background introduction. Those students who were enthusiastic, or who wished to appear so, asked for a general background text (to explain my lectures perhaps), and that is what I hope this book will provide. With luck, other scientists who have only a peripheral interest in cell movement will also find this a useful overview. The more proximate origin of the book was a special 'option' subject which I taught for two years to our Senior Honours Cell Biology students in Glasgow.

Book excerpt: This book describes the latest molecular and genetic advances in the study of one of the most fundamental, and yet least understood, processes of life: the movement of cells. Cell locomotion lies at the basis of embryological development, wound healing, and the spread of cancers. The recent advances in identifying the molecular components of cell motility can be found in many publications, but this text uniquely provides a synthesis of the molecular and phenomenological aspects that will be required for an understanding of the controlling processes that underlie cell behavior. The book will benefit final-year students studying molecular/cell biology but it is primarily aimed at graduate research workers, in all biomolecular sciences, who need to understand the wider implications of their research. Besides cell and molecular biologists, these will include workers in oncology, vascular biology, tissue repair, and cell engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell Movement in Health and Disease brings the several scientific domains related to the phenomena together, establishing a consistent foundation for researchers in this exciting field. The content is presented in four main section. The first explores the foundations of Cell Movement, including overviews of cellular structure, signaling, physiology, motion-related proteins, and the interface with the cellular membrane. The second part covers the biological aspects of cellular movement, starting with chemical and mechanical sensing, describing the types of cell movement, mechanics at cell level, cell physiology, collective behavior, and the connections with the extracellular matrix. The following chapters provide an overview of the molecular machinery involved and cell-type specific movement. The third part of the book is dedicated to the translational aspects of cell movement, highlighting the key conditions associated with cell movement dysfunction, like cell invasion in cancer, wound healing, developmental issues, neurological dysfunctions, and immune response. The final part of the book covers key methods and modeling tools for cell movement research, including predictive mathematical models, in vitro and in vivo methods, biophysical and bioinformatics tools. Cell Movement in Health and Disease is the ideal reference for scientists from different backgrounds converging to expand the understanding of this key cellular process. Cellular and molecular biologists will gain a better understanding of the physical principals operating at cellular level while biophysicist and biomedical engineers will benefit from the solid biology foundation provided by the book. Combines Biology, Physics and Modeling of cellular movement in one single source Updated with the current understanding of the field Includes key research methods for cell movement investigation Cover translational aspects of cellular movement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the most recent advances in physics-inspired cell movement models. This synergetic, cross-disciplinary effort to increase the fidelity of computational algorithms will lead to a better understanding of the complex biomechanics of cell movement, and stimulate progress in research on related active matter systems, from suspensions of bacteria and synthetic swimmers to cell tissues and cytoskeleton.Cell motility and collective motion are among the most important themes in biology and statistical physics of out-of-equilibrium systems, and crucial for morphogenesis, wound healing, and immune response in eukaryotic organisms. It is also relevant for the development of effective treatment strategies for diseases such as cancer, and for the design of bioactive surfaces for cell sorting and manipulation. Substrate-based cell motility is, however, a very complex process as regulatory pathways and physical force generation mechanisms are intertwined. To understand the interplay between adhesion, force generation and motility, an abundance of computational models have been proposed in recent years, from finite element to immerse interface methods and phase field approaches. This book is primarily written for physicists, mathematical biologists and biomedical engineers working in this rapidly expanding field, and can serve as supplementary reading for advanced graduate courses in biophysics and mathematical biology. The e-book incorporates experimental and computer animations illustrating various aspects of cell movement./div

Book excerpt: Aimed at postgraduate students in a variety of biology-related disciplines, this volume presents a collection of mathematical and computational single-cell-based models and their application. The main sections cover four general model groupings: hybrid cellular automata, cellular potts, lattice-free cells, and viscoelastic cells. Each section is introduced by a discussion of the applicability of the particular modelling approach and its advantages and disadvantages, which will make the book suitable for students starting research in mathematical biology as well as scientists modelling multicellular processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is ten years since the first symposium on cell locomotion was held (Locomotion of Tissue Cells, Ciba Foundation Symposium 14, 1972). That meeting was chaired by Michael Abercrombie, and in his intro ductory remarks he commented on the extent to which the importance of cell locomotion, apart from that seen in leucocytes, had been under estimated. Much has been done to correct that neglect during the suc ceeding decade, and we have learned more about the underlying mechanisms of cell locomotion and about the factors which may influence it. Abercrombie was himself a major contributor to this field of research (as a glance at the lists of references in this book will confirm), and his ideas inspired the work of many other investigators. As in all branches of science, progress in the study of celliocomo tion has depended on the availability of appropriate experimental techniques. Of these, tissue culture has made the greatest contribution, in conjunction with a variety of procedures using either the light or the electron microscope. We have, therefore, attempted, in chapters 2 and 3, to provide explanations of the techniques which have been parti cularly fruitful, but only in sufficient detail to permit the reader to is not a laboratory manual.
