Continental shelves, coastal seas and estuaries contain many valuable resources for economic, social, tourist and recreational activity. The majority of the world's largest cities are located on the coastline. For example, 86% of the total Australian population is located in the coastal zone. Almost 75% of the global harvest of fisheries comes from coastal areas. However, it is also the region into which anthropogenic wastes are discharged, leading to degradation of the environment. As we become more aware of the consequences of these discharges, and develop new management strategies to avoid detrimental effects in estuaries and coastal regions, it is clear that an understanding of mixing processes plays a very important role in dispersion of introduced contaminants. This volume consists of 30 papers, each dealing with different aspects of mixing processes in the marine environment. The following topics are covered: inner continental shelf processes, shelf?]estuary interactions, estuarine processes, sediment transport processes, ocean outfalls, and theoretical studies. Coastal water quality, flooding, estuarine habitat diversity, and distribution of coastal organisms depend in part on the dynamics of the coastal water column. Particularly within coastal embayments and estuaries, areas within the influence of freshwater from surface and ground water sources, the water column may be stratified by temperature and/or salinity. Resulting density gradients affect the behavior of the water column, including mixing and transport processes. Understanding physical processes associated with buoyancy in the coastal oceans is a requisite first step towards understanding the effects of buoyancy on coastal processes, including geological, biological and geochemical aspects. This volume presents 23 papers addressing various aspects of buoyancy in the coastal oceans, including plumes, tidal interaction with buoyancy, shelf dynamics and mixing processes, and estuarine dynamics of buoyancy. Book excerpt: Multi-channel estuaries, such as the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and the Scheldt in the Netherlands, have characteristics of both the river and the sea, forming an environment influenced by tidal movements of the sea and freshwater flow of the river. This study discusses a predictive analytical approach for salinity intrusion and discharge estimate in multi-channel estuaries. The new approach agrees with 1-D hydrodynamic models and observations, indicating its applicability in practice. It has successfully developed a new theory and a new equation to quantify tidal pumping due to ebb-flood channel residual circulation and the related salt dispersion.
