Book excerpt: Durante la temporada de riego 2000-2001, se recopilaron antecedentes básicos para caracterizar el Predio Los Crisoles, ubicado en la localidad de Quiriquina, Comuna de San Ignacio, Octava Región, con el objeto de establecer un Sistema de Información Geográfico (SIG), para ser utilizado como herramienta de diseño y planificación de riego predial. Esta herramienta de apoyo está compuesta por capas temáticas con diferentes antecedentes del predio, como: distribución de potreros, topografía y caracterización de las propiedades físico-hídricas del suelo. Con la información antes mencionada y definida la disponibilidad de agua y la evapotranspiración del sector, se procedió a diseñar y planificar los sistemas de riego factibles de ser implementados en el predio. Finalmente se analizó la implementación de los sistemas de riego por aspersión, pivote central y cobertura total, destinados a cultivos tradicionales como remolacha, trigo, alfalfa y empastada. Para el riego de frutales menores (arándanos), se estudio la implementación de riego por goteo. La utilización del SIG facilita considerablemente las labores de planificación, sin embargo para el diseño es necesario incorporar otras herramientas de apoyo como AUTOCAD, ya que el programa utilizado en este caso (ArcView) no cuenta con todas las facilidades necesarias para este objetivo. Es importante destacar que el SIG es una herramienta de gran apoyo para hacer un análisis global de diseño con sus estructuras y ubicación.

Moore begins by discussing recent feminist debates on the body and the notion of the non-universal human subject. She then considers why anthropologists have contributed relatively little to these debates, and suggests that this has much to do with the history of anthropological thought with regard to the conceptualization of "persons" and "selves" cross-culturally. Moore develops a specific anthropological approach to feminist post-structuralist and psychoanalytic theory. From Brazil and Mexico to Zimbabwe and the Philippines, rural movements of diverse political character, but all sharing the same social basis of dispossessed peasants and unemployed workers, have used land occupations and other tactics to confront the neoliberal state. This volume brings together for the first time across three continents - Africa, Latin America and Asia - an intellectually consistent set of original investigations into this new generation of rural social movements. These country studies seek to identify their social composition, strategies, tactics, and ideologies; to assess their relations with other social actors, including political parties, urban social movements, and international aid agencies and other institutions; and to examine their most common tactic, the land occupation, its origins, pace and patterns, as well as the responses of governments and landowners. At a more fundamental level, this volume explores the ways in which two decades of neoliberal policy - including new land tenure arrangements intended to hasten the commodification of land, and new land uses linked to global markets -- have undermined the social reproduction of the rural labour force and created the conditions for popular resistance. The volume demonstrates the longer-term potential impact of these movements. In economic terms, they raise the possibility of tackling immiseration by means of the redistribution of land and the reorganisation of production on a more efficient and socially responsible basis. And in political terms, breaking the power of landowners and transnational capital with interests in land could ultimately open the way to an alternative pattern of capital accumulation and development.

The basic concepts and algorithms from the classical MADM methods have been used in the development of the fuzzy MADM methods. We give an overview of the classical MADM in Chapter II. Chapter III presents the basic concepts and mathematical operations of fuzzy set theory with simple numerical examples in a easy-to-read and easy-to-follow manner. Fuzzy MADM methods basically consist of two phases: (1) the aggregation of the performance scores with respect to all the attributes for each alternative, and (2) the rank ordering of the alternatives according to the aggregated scores.

Book excerpt: Environmental decisions must satisfy a multitude of objectives and the matching of a plan, policy or project to such objectives is a matter of both facts and value judgements. Value Functions for Environmental Management provides a systematic approach to the structuring and measurement of value judgements, showing how they drive the decision process and how to make them transparent and effective in support of complex decisions. The value functions that the book describes provide a scheme for the exploration of human values and a tool for transforming them into an analytical model. A clear statement can then be made of the degree to which a decision has achieved its objectives, and how conflicting objectives may be addressed. This does not mean that there is no role for human judgement in the process. Complexity, often coupled with large information gaps, necessitates expert judgement, but the values adopted by the experts are themselves capable of being structured and measured according to the value function methodology presented here, even if the judgements themselves are qualitative and tentative. Value models for expert panels are also presented. The use of the methodology in practice is illustrated by examples. The book contains an extensive subject index.
