Book excerpt: Maintaining the health of pigs is vital in pig farming and production. This new book written by experts from around the world focuses on the health of pigs, first with coverage of the disorders of pigs organised by clinical sign and body system. The book explores environmental medicine and then health maintenance. Treatment options are discussed, emphasizing a reduction in antimicrobial use and an increased awareness of a holistic approach to treatment. The book includes over 1,500 high-quality illustrations to enhance the clinical description, as well as a wealth of high-quality videos to test the reader in making differential diagnoses with treatment options. Quizzes at the end of each section also encourage reflective learning. International experts from the UK, USA, Australia, Spain and Taiwan cover clinical examination of the individual pig and groups along with environmental medicine, making this the ideal reference for veterinary practitioners and students. Those interested in population medicine (poultry, aquaculture, cattle and small ruminant and apiaries) will particularly enjoy the holistic approach to veterinary medicine. All those who appreciate the many talents of pigs will enjoy the practical approach to managing the health of their animals. This book moves veterinary science forward, promoting health rather than treating disease. It will be your number one reference for keeping your pigs healthy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African swine fever (ASF) is endemic in some parts of eastern and southern Africa. The introduction of ASF into free areas leads to losses because of the devastating effects it causes. In order to minimize these losses, it is essential that there is a strong early warning and early reaction capacity. The key to such a system is disease recognition. The purpose of this manual is to enhance recognition of ASF at all levels for early warning and early reaction, so that the disease can be identified and eliminated at its earliest appearance in any area. Special attention has been given to the clinical, anatomical and pathological similarity of African swine fever with classical swine fever.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Information in Relation to Disease Prevailing Among Swine and Other Domestic Animals So general and fatal have many of these maladies grown that stock breeding and rearing has, to some extent, become a precarious calling instead of the profitable business of former years. This would seem to be especially true as it relates to swine. Year by year new diseases, heretofore unknown in our country, make their appearance among this class of farm animals, while older ones become permanently localized and much more fatal in their results. Farmers, as a general thing, are neglectful of their stock, and pay but little attention to sporadic cases of sickness among their flocks and herds. It is only when diseases become general, and consequently of an epidemic and contagious character, that active measures are taken for the relief of the animals afflicted. It is then generally too late, as remedies have ceased to have their usual beneficial effects, and the disease is only stayed when it has no more victims to prey upon. This interest is too great to be longer neglected by the general government. Not only the health of its citizens, but one of the greatest sources of our wealth, demands that it should furnish the means for a most searching and thorough investigation into the causes of all diseases affecting live stock. While a large number of the diseases to which farm-animals are subject are familiar to skilled veterinary surgeons, it should be borne in mind that but few sections of the country are blessed with professors in this science, as reference to the letters herewith transmitted will abundantly show. In most cases the stock-breeder himself assumes the important functions and responsibilities of the surgeon, and without the least knowledge of veterinary science he proceeds to diagnose the disease and dose the animal with a drug of which he is ignorant, or of the effects of which he is unable to judge until the animal has )assed beyond the hope of recovery. Where such is the practice it is not strange that nine cases out of ten prove fatal. It may be urged that works on veterinary surgery describe most of the diseases to which farm-animals are subject, and point out the best-known remedies for the same. Admit this, and yet the desired relief is not afforded thereby. These works are expensive and but few farmers can afford to purchase them; a still less number possess the qualifications necessary to comprehend them. What would then seem the wisest policy is that which may result from an investigation of the character proposed, and the results disseminated gratuitously through means of cheap annual reports from this department. By such means farmers and stock-breeders would soon become familiar with the general symptoms of the more prevalent diseases, and also be enabled to apply intelligently such remedies as science has or may point out. Some very interesting investigations in this matter have been commenced, and are now being prosecuted with such vigor as is possible with the very insufficient appropriation that can be devoted to the purpose. The correspondence herewith transmitted contains information which, if heeded by the farmers and stock-growers of the country, will result in a better sanitary condition, and a consequent diminution of disease among all classes of domesticated animals.
