Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discussions on the Apocalypse Dices retained have been revised in the light of later investigation, both on the Continent and in England while the Appendix on The Unity of the Apocalypse has been greatly enlarged. This last point had been treated very briefly in 1886, because at that date the unity of the book may be said to have been generally acknowledged, and attacks upon it, after having been suspended for a time, were then only beginning to be resumed. Two Discussions, one on The relation of the Apocalypse to the general Apocalyptic Literature of the first century, and one on The relation to one another of the seven Epistles to the Churches, in Chap. Ii. Iii. Have been added. The first of these is an effort to meet the difficulty felt by many, that the author of the Apocalypse cannot be St. John, if St. John be also the author of the fourth Gospel, because it would have been impossible, more particularly when the late date of the Apocalypse is accepted, for the same person to write, within the short period then allowed, two books differing so much both in form and expression. The second of these Discussions, the last in this volume, may, it is hoped, throw some light on the conception and structure of the Apocalypse as a whole, and thus help to prepare the reader for objections of various kinds, taken to a book in every respect so remarkable and unique. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Apocalypse But let none of these things either stumble or discourage you; for, be assured, that "no strange thing has happened to you." The path you now tread, is that in which all the first churches walked, until Antichrist arose and corrupted the christian profession; and it will be again restored and become a "highway," when Antichrist shall be destroyed "by the brightness of the Lord's coming;" when "the cities of the nations fall," or, to speak without a figure, when all national establishments of Christianity are swept away, and the dissenting churches get rid of the leaven of Popery which still attaches to them. That much of this remains to be done, you, I am sure, will require no proof from me. While we find some of the strictest sect of our dissenters contending that the apostolic churches are no longer an example to us for our imitation in conducting the affairs of the kingdom of Christ; that though they were not without their use in the infancy of Christianity, or so long as it maintained its pristine purity, yet that now a new case has arisen, and to accommodate matters to this new order of things, it has become necessary to abandon the example of the apostolic churches, and to meet Antichrist half-way!!! - I say, so long as such monstrous opinions as these are broached in the face of the sun, and acted upon, the state of our dissenting churches must, in the very nature of things, become increasingly corrupt. May you, my brethren, ever be upon your guard against that accursed sophistry which would lead you to tamper with divine ordinances and institutions; you can be at no loss to trace it to its origin. Gen. iii. 1-5. Remember that those things were given you by the adorable Head of the church, to keep, and not to play fast and loose with, according as human weakness and caprice may dictate. And while all your affairs are conducted with charity, "do all things without murmurings and disputings, that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation; among whom may you shine as lights in the world, holding forth the word of life, that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that my labours among you have not been in vain." The author lived nearly fifty years after its issue, and nearly sixty years after that of its first edition; and, while the whole of that time was spent in the careful study and diligent teaching of Holy Scripture, every year served to strengthen his belief in the correctness of what he has taught in this volume. Those who were privi leged with his intimacy are confident that, if he had lived to send forth a third edition, its features would be unaltered. Doubtless, some expository details he would have modified - indeed, some such were occasionally mentioned - but nothing of that nature has been or could be attempted by others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visions and Revelations: Discourses on the Apocalypse Few books of the New Testament have so appealed to the imagination and heart of the Church as the "Revelation of St. John." In every age the Apocalypse has had its careful students, who have sought to interpret its imagery and explain its message. These writers have, for the most part, been anxious, chiefly, to shew the application of the Book to the circumstances of their own time; and it is not to be denied that the results of their ingenious toil have been often fantastic enough. Yet they have not erred in believing that the Visions of Patmos have a new significance for every age. Their mistake has been their failure, sometimes, to recognise that the pictures and sayings of the Apocalypse had an immediate contemporary meaning, and were directly addressed to men and women who had to live the Christian life under the conditions that prevailed in the Roman Province of Asia at the close of the first century of our era. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Apocalypse These Essays are an extension of a book written by me in the year 1905, and published in January, 1906, entitled, The Apocalypse, The Antichrist, and The End. They are meant to show the great importance of the date of the book in every department of its exegesis. Every scrap of evidence we possess is in favour of dating the book in the year 67 A.D. If we accept that date, the book unfolds its message in an intelligible way. If we do not, it remains, more or less, a mystery. It has been generally assumed by Catholic writers that the Apocalypse was written in the year 96, because St Irenaeus, who lived in the second century, is supposed to have handed it down as the tradition of the early Church. But St Irenaeus did not say that the Apocalypse was written, or that the visions were seen, at the close of Domitian's reign; but that "The Apocalypse" was seen then. The Apocalypse, meaning "The Revelation," was the title of the book which St John wrote. What St Irenaeus said, therefore, was that the book was seen at the close of Domitian's reign. This does not necessarily mean that the book was written then. A detailed explanation of this matter is given in the second Essay. As all these Essays deal, practically, with the same subject, there is some repetition, which is regrettable, but unavoidable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Apocalypse To the seven churches of protonsq Asia is the work which the writer has undertaken inscribed. The names of these (l: 11) is a pledge for the importance of the churches addressed. Whether the churches of that day in Asia were limi ted to this number, is a question easily solved; for in Col. 4: 13 the church at Hi erupolis is mentioned in connection With that at Laodicea, and the former is in the near neighbourhood of the latter. Colossae, also was in the immediate neighbour hood of Laodicea. All three were on the confines of Phrygia and Lydia, and be longed, no doubt, to the circle of proconsular Asia. 80, a few years later than when the Apocalypse was written, we know there were large and flourishing churches in Tralles where lgnatius lived, and at Magnesia in its near neighbour hood, both in Lydia and but a moderate distance from Ephesus. Whether the Apocalyptist was conversant with these, and with many other churches of Asia besides those mentioned in the Revelation, cannot bedecided by express evidence but the probability surely is, that such a man as John, (whether apostle or other preacher of the gospel), would not have founded, or formed acquaintance with, seven churches only in Asia, when the whole region was filled with cities and an immense population. There must be other reasons, then, why only sea-en church es are here addressed and these Will be the subject of discussion in the sequel when we come to v. Asia is a name to which very different meanings are attached, by different writers and at different periods of time. It means, (1) The whole eastern Con tinent. (2) Hither Asia or Asia Minor, from the Sinus homes and Armenia Mi nor to the Aegean Sea. (3) That part of Asia which Attalus Ill king of Perga mus, gave by testament to the Romans, i. E. Mysia, Phrygia, Lycaonia, Lydia, Carin, Pisidia, and the southern coast, i. C. All the western, south-western, and southern parts of Asia Minor. (4) In the New Testament, the western coast from M ysia downwards, with the inland country to a considerable distance back, comprehending the western part of Phrygia, appears to be named flsia; and this tract constituted proconsular Asia, in the narrow meaning of that appellation.
