Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the advent of data mining and its successful application on conventional data, Web-related information has been an appropriate and increasingly popular target of knowledge discovery. Depending on whether the data used in the knowledge discovery process concerns the Web itself in terms of content or the usage of the content, one distinguishes between Web content mining and Web usage mining. This book is the first one entirely devoted to Web usage mining. It originates from the WEBKDD'99 Workshop held during the 1999 KDD Conference. The ten revised full papers presented together with an introductory survey by the volume editors documents the state of the art in this exciting new area. The book presents topical sections on Modeling the User, Discovering Rules and Patterns of Navigation, and Measuring interestingness in Web Usage Mining.

Book excerpt: 1 WorkshopTheme Data mining as a discipline aims to relate the analysis of large amounts of user data to shed light on key business questions. Web usage mining in particular, a relatively young discipline, investigates methodologies and techniques that - dress the unique challenges of discovering insights from Web usage data, aiming toevaluateWebusability, understandtheinterestsandexpectationsofusersand assess the e?ectiveness of content delivery. The maturing and expanding Web presents a key driving force in the rapid growth of electronic commerce and a new channel for content providers. Customized o?ers and content, made possible by discovered knowledge about the customer, are fundamental for the establi- ment of viable e-commerce solutions and sustained and e?ective content delivery in noncommercial domains. Rich Web logs provide companies with data about their online visitors and prospective customers, allowing microsegmentation and personalized interactions. While Web mining as a domain is several years old, the challenges that characterize data analysis in this area continue to be formidable. Though p- processing data routinely takes up a major part of the e?ort in data mining, Web usage data presents further challenges based on the di?culties of assigning data streams to unique users and tracking them over time. New innovations are required to reliably reconstruct sessions, to ascertain similarity and di?erences between sessions, and to be able to segment online users into relevant groups.

Presently, over 60 million machines have access to the Internet and to its resources. However, the Internet is also the largest distributed system o?ering di?erent computational services and possibilities not only for cluster computing. If the needs of modern mobile computing and multimedia systems are taken into account, it becomes clear that modern methods must ensure an e?ective development and management of the Internet allowing each user fast access to this huge resource space. The Innovative Internet Computing Systems workshop is organized by the Gesellschaft fur ̈ Informatik(GI) in Germany. It intends to be an open me- ing point for scientists dealing with di?erent aspects of this complex topic. In contrast to the Distributed Communities on the Web workshops, which can be 2 considered as the roots of I CS, special attention is given to fundamental - search works and the application of theoretical and formal results in practical implementations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Web Personalization can be defined as any set of actions that can tailor the Web experience to a particular user or set of users. To achieve effective personalization, organizations must rely on all available data, including the usage and click-stream data (reflecting user behaviour), the site content, the site structure, domain knowledge, as well as user demographics and profiles. In addition, efficient and intelligent techniques are needed to mine this data for actionable knowledge, and to effectively use the discovered knowledge to enhance the users' Web experience. The aim of the International Workshop on Adaptive and Personalized Semantic Web that was held in the Sixteenth ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia (September 6-9, 2005, Salzburg, Austria) was to bring together researchers and practitioners in the fields of web engineering, adaptive hypermedia, semantic web technologies, knowledge management, information retrieval, user modelling, and other related disciplines which provide enabling technologies for personalization and adaptation on the World Wide Web. The book contains the papers presented during the workshop. Presentations of the papers are available online at www.hci.gr.

Book excerpt: The words you provided shed light on a truth we all know deep down-the ever-increasing importance and impact of technology, with the internet reigning supreme in today's society. It is a testament to the fact that our lives have become faster, easier, and more intricately interconnected, all thanks to the marvels of technological advancement. But amidst the glory, a shadow looms-a concern for the excessive use of the internet and the potential consequences it may have on our physical and mental well-being. In 1995, Goldberg unveiled the concept of internet addiction, a compulsion that many struggle to control. Our very brains become wired to incessantly seek the latest information and immerse ourselves in the sprawling web of social networking sites. It is a phenomenon that proves difficult to tame, raising questions of whether it is a mental injury or a social problem. Some argue that an addiction to the internet can leave a negative imprint on both our bodies and our minds.

Book excerpt: How can the Internet and world wide web improve my long-term competitive advantage? This book helps answer this question by providing a better understanding of the technologies, their potential applications and the ways they can be used to add value for customers, support new strategies, and improve existing operations. It is not just about e-commerce but the broader theme of e-business which affects products, business processes, strategies, and relationships with customers, suppliers, distributors and competitors. To cover future trends, the editors have collected papers from authors operating at the frontiers of the developments so the reader can more appreciate the directions in which these technologies are heading. The resulting 165 essays have been collated into ten sections, which have been grouped in three parts: key issues, applications areas and applications, tools and technologies. A business rarely makes radical changes but is constantly making adjustments to circumstances. Businesses must now adapt to the global implications of the Internet and world wide web. This book hopes to aid awareness of the implications so that the changes are managed wisely.

Book excerpt: These are the conference proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2001). Although discovery is naturally ubiquitous in s- ence, and scientific discovery itself has been subject to scientific investigation for centuries, the term Discovery Science is comparably new. It came up in conn- tion with the Japanese Discovery Science project (cf. Arikawa's invited lecture on The Discovery Science Project in Japan in the present volume) some time during the last few years. Setsuo Arikawa is the father in spirit of the Discovery Science conference series. He led the above mentioned project, and he is currently serving as the chairman of the international steering committee for the Discovery Science c- ference series. The other members of this board are currently (in alphabetical order) Klaus P. Jantke, Masahiko Sato, Ayumi Shinohara, Carl H. Smith, and Thomas Zeugmann. Colleagues and friends from all over the world took the opportunity of me- ing for this conference to celebrate Arikawa's 60th birthday and to pay tribute to his manifold contributions to science, in general, and to Learning Theory and Discovery Science, in particular. Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT, for short) is another conference series initiated by Setsuo Arikawa in Japan in 1990. In 1994, it amalgamated with the conference series on Analogical and Inductive Inference (AII), when ALT was held outside of Japan for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the early days of machine learning and data mining, it has been realized that the traditional attribute-value and item-set representations are too limited for many practical applications in domains such as chemistry, biology, network analysis and text mining. This has triggered a lot of research on mining and learning within alternative and more expressive representation formalisms such as computational logic, relational algebra, graphs, trees and sequences. The motivation for using graphs, trees and sequences. Is that they are 1) more expressive than flat representations, and 2) potentially more efficient than multi-relational learning and mining techniques. At the same time, the data structures of graphs, trees and sequences are among the best understood and most widely applied representations within computer science. Thus these representations offer ideal opportunities for developing interesting contributions in data mining and machine learning that are both theoretically well-founded and widely applicable. The goal of this book is to collect recent outstanding studies on mining and learning within graphs, trees and sequences in studies worldwide.
