Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Various Subjects and Occasions Dr. South gave successively to the public, six volumes of his sermons during his life five others, much inferior in interest, and in their general character, afterwards appeared. The sixth com plete edition was published in 1744; nor is any subsequent to that date known to me. It is certainly remarkable, that while two distinct volumes of his contemporary Barrow, alter the present plan, have issued from the Clarendon press within this century; the same cﬂice has not till now been performed for South. What renders the solution of this the more difficult is, that by the manner in which he is to this day referred to and quoted, on questions of doctrine, in the principal journal of the English church, his name would seem to have lost little of its weight and inﬂuence with the lapse of years. The local topics of many of these sermons, can explain this neglect, only in part; for this circumstance has its share also in giving them something of their interest and value. As little can it be thought chargeable, in any great measure at least, on the unami able features which his pages too often present. In that case surely, the author would have most rigorously expiated the faults of the man. Various causes, probably, have conspired to te remove these sermons so far from the public norice; and it affords some complacency to the editor, as well as some recompense to his labour, to have been in any degree the means of their revival. As to which I shall only say, that it is my practice to write all I have a mind to say in public. It is true indeed, I do not pretend to such an exact memory, as that I can confine myself in the delivery, to every thing in my notes, without varying a word or phrase but yet I use to be pretty exact that way, when I know such critical auditors as Mr A. Are before me. One of my own children, who I am sure would not adventure to alter a word, did dictate the following sermon to an amanuensis, from my original notes and that same Copy goes to the press: I own I helped the grammar, in some places, when I revised it. So that there is not a phrase or sentence altered, at which my accuser might take the least umbrage. And I do very well re member, that some things were expressed softer in the delivery than what they are in the notes which now are come abroad. Mr A. Told me, that, if I published my sermons, I could not hinder him from printing the notes he took from my month. For my part, if he took every word I spoke at that time, I should be very easy for (i desire to speak it not out of vain glory, but to the praise of Him who makes the tongue of the stammerer to Speak plain) that which I deliver in public, has, for ordinary, the advantage of my notes, both for closeness of connection and accuracy of expression. Each of these paragraphs, embodying one leading thought, forms the subject of a separate discourse, in which an attempt is made to explain whatever is difficult in the phraseology, and to illustrate the doctrinal or practical principles which it contains the object being not to discuss, in a general and abstract manner, the subjects which the text may suggest, but to bring clearly out the Apostle's statements, and their design; and to Show how the statements are fitted to gain the objects for which they are made. The Author has been able in any good measure to realize his own idea, grammatical and logical interpretation have been combined; and the Exposition will be found at once exegetical, doc trinal, and practical.
