Book excerpt: This is the First Volume of the Second Edition of the Occult Classic Dogma and Ritual of High Magic by Eliphas Levi (originally published in French in 1861). It was previously translated into English with the title of Transcendental Magic by A. E. Waite in 1910. Waite's translation lacks something that the publishers hope this new translation will provide. This volume is presented in a Bilingual format (English side-by-side with the original French) with copious footnotes and lots of illustrations. It also includes the 'Preliminary Discourse' to the Second Edition which has only recently been translated into English. Levi states that he has created a "complete course" on the science of the ancient magi, which is made up of 3 parts (in 4 volumes): Dogma and Ritual of High Magic, the History of Magic, and the Key to the Great Mysteries. His statement about this course is included as the 'Preface' to this new edition in order to facilitate the reader's understanding of his objectives.

Granted self-governing and ‘independent’ status by Pretoria, they aimed to deflect the demands for full political representation by black South Africans and were shunned by the anti-apartheid movement. In 1972, Steve Biko wrote that ‘politically, the bantustans are the greatest single fraud ever invented by white politicians’. With the end of apartheid and the first democratic elections of 1994, the bantustans formally ceased to exist, but their legacies remain inscribed in South Africa’s contemporary social, cultural, political, and economic landscape. While the older literature on the bantustans has tended to focus on their repressive role and political illegitimacy, this edited volume offers new approaches to the histories and afterlives of the former bantustans in South Africa by a new generation of scholars.
