Reimagining School Discipline for the 21st Century centralizes the assets and strengths of historically marginalized students and the professional knowledge of school personnel as possible avenues to implement solutions to eliminate school discipline disproportionality. Rather than redressing the issues of school discipline disproportionality overall, this book examines the existence of school on student groups who, according to research and national and state reports, are afflicted the most: African American, Latinx, Native American, and LGBTQ+ population. A confluence of these identities can exacerbate such disproportionality, which based on the literature decreases the academic growth of students. However, situated within these disparities are opportunities to better and critically engage students based on their cultural, racial/ethnic, and social emotional learning assets. The significant feature of this book lies in its purpose and audience reach. Each chapter was written based on the scholar’s affinity to that student group or practitioner’s affiliation to that specific profession. This provides a genuine perspective and knowledge based on first hand experiences concerning school discipline and applicable approaches to remedy such issues. Additionally, all the chapters articulate the pressing issue of school discipline according to their group, and explicates best-practices to best serve the assets of students in K-12 school settings. Book excerpt: This dissertation addressed the research question, what are the perceptions of African American male high school students in regard to racial disproportionality and disciplinary practices? This question was addressed through the perspective of African American male students in a school district in northeast Ohio. The topic and research question led to literature research topics such as, the discipline gap, zero tolerance policies, school to prison pipeline, and restorative justice. The study sought to address the gap in the literature with obtaining a student voice on the topics. Several themes emerged from the research. The themes are referrals and removals, equal treatment, and background and reputation. All participants agreed that they had been removed from a classroom by a classroom teacher for one reason or another. The participants also agreed that they believed that not all students in schools are treated equally. Along with this the participants believed that their background and reputation played a key role in the way they were disciplined compared to other students. Some participants even felt that situations that may have transpired as early as elementary and middle school have followed them to high school and still affect them negatively. The research led to implications for teachers, administrators, and students in connection to student discipline practices.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study sought to analyze the perceptions of secondary building principals and assistant principals in order to gain a better understanding of the policies and processes they follow when students are returning to their school building upon exclusionary discipline measures. This study also examined the perceived barriers and issues associated with a student transitioning back to a regular school environment after serving long-term suspensions or expulsion. Furthermore, this study assessed the impact a student can have on other students, staff, and the overall school environment. Additionally, this study analyzed the quality, quantity, and the cultural responsiveness to the proactive interventions that are available to all students as a mean to prevent behaviors that lead to exclusionary discipline measures. A total of 36 principals and assistant principals from Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester counties participated in an online survey in order to answer the research questions. Of the 36 participants, six volunteered to take part in the interview process to provide more information as it relates to the research questions. Overall, results indicated that middle and high school principals and assistant principals see a need for a more formalized process when students are transitioning back to regular school environments. Further findings specified the need for access to more resources and supports when students return to district school buildings, as well as professional development on cultural responsive practices and behavior support for teachers and other building staff members.
