Book excerpt: When church and culture look the same... For the many Christians eager to prove we can be both holy and cool, cultural pressures are too much. We either compartmentalize our faith or drift from it altogether—into a world that’s so alluring. Have you wondered lately: Why does the Western church look so much like the world? Why are so many of my friends leaving the faith? How can we get back to our roots? Disappearing Church will help you sort through concerns like these, guiding you in a thoughtful, faithful, and hopeful response. Weaving together art, history, and theology, pastor and cultural observer Mark Sayers reminds us that real growth happens when the church embraces its countercultural witness, not when it blends in. It’s like Jesus said long ago, “If the salt loses its saltiness, it is no longer good for anything…”

Book excerpt: Are you working harder at church these days but enjoying it less? Are you wondering why, amid so much Christian church activity, American life seems to be angrier and more fragmented and stressful? Why isn't the Body of Christ more powerful in shaping culture? Galen Blom and Bob Baldwin take a fresh approach to these questions in The Missing Church: The Power of Being the Body of Christ in the Family, Neighborhood and Workplace, and the answer is profoundly simple: the church has little influence on our society because it is missing from the people groups that actually exercise dominion in our culture—our families, our local neighborhoods, our places of work, and our schools. But how can the church be present in the family and in a suburban neighborhood? And isn't it illegal for Christians to be the church at work or at school? Blom and Baldwin trace God's plan for human society from Genesis through the New Testament. His Word has much to say about what Christians are to be together as Christ's Body within these strategic people groups. The good news is God's call is not something additional we have to add to our already busy lives. It is simply a call to live in community that adds wholeness and meaning to every part of life. Let The Missing Church help you see church in a new way.

"But many of the priests and Levites and heads of father's houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy" (Ezra 3:12). The Second Temple existed from around 516 BC to AD 70 and served as the temple for Jesus and Paul. But the Second Temple was missing five things: the ark of the covenant, the glory, divine fire, the Urim and Thummim, and the prophetic voice. Many people of God are weeping today because they experience a church empty of presence and glory. There is something missing. We have lost the glory of His presence. We no longer carry discernment or speak the prophetic word to the nations. Could the church today be missing the same things as the Second Temple? The church, as the final temple of God, should be the place of His presence and fullness of the Spirit. We should be the fiery voice of discernment and truth. The church must recover what is missing. We can restore what is missing, or we can become the Church of the Missing Five.

Book excerpt: The Holy Family of Jesus as commonly depicted in religious art is a myth fabricated by the early Christian church. Explaining this assertion, Tobias Churton leads the reader on a fascinating and highly readable quest to discover all that is to be found in the historical sources about Jesus' family background, parentage and siblings and the possibility of his having descendants. When Romanized Christianity decided to bend the historical facts about true early Christianity, Jesus was required to be the only son of God and to have been the product of a virgin birth, so that he could avoid the taint of original sin. Any inconvenient siblings had to be written out of history to prevent them from muddying the theological waters. Even today, in Catholic encyclopedias of the saints, St James the Just (the 'Zadokite'), while regarded as Jesus' brother by the majority of Church Fathers, is instead called the 'son of Alphaeus', deliberately obscuring any theologically compromising family relationship. This investigation is based on a thorough examination of a broad range of sources: the canonical evidence (Gospels and Epistles); apocryphal evidence including the Gnostic gospels and rejected works of early Christianity (including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the works of Josephus, Hegesippus and Eusebius); and myths and legends about 'heirs', known as the Desposynoi, who either travelled to France or remained in Palestine centuries after Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oak Cliff and the Missing Pieces is the first book written about the area's history in over three decades. It not only captures the beginnings of the early settlement, it takes the reader beyond a century and a half of growth and tracks how the community has evolved. The book is unique in that it captures the history of West Dallas in conjunction with its Oak Cliff neighbor and how the two transformed together over time into what we see today. The collection of historical accounts and hundreds of photos identify individuals and places of prominence finally memorialized in one anthology. The narrative also takes readers through facts and stories that have been ignored or concealed, revealing an authentic depiction of how the community was, at times, abused and neglected. Readers will enjoy this introspective examination of the area south and west of the Trinity and will once and for all put together the missing pieces of the storied land that has long been misunderstood. All proceeds from the sale of Oak Cliff and the Missing Pieces will go to benefit non-profit organizations in Oak Cliff and West Dallas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that theology is both integrally related to formation in Jesus Christ and shapes our understanding of the world. Christian formation is incomplete and impossible without theological formation, because Christ transforms our hearts and minds, attuning them to the reality of God. As the authors explore the deep connections between theology and the life of the Christian, they emphasize Christian formation as a defining feature of the church, arguing that theology must be integrally connected to the church's traditions and practices.

Book excerpt: Kent and Angie Rowen . . . have everything going for them—popular, good jobs, happy children and grandchildren, prominent parents. They are the last couple the people of Newbridge would expect to have a midlife crisis. Trouble on paradise begins when Kent, successful insurance agent, decides to follow his Walter Mitty dream of becoming an author. Not content with one published novel he is at work on a second, With Hoops of Steel. Night after night he secludes himself in his den, slaving away feverishly at his laptop, neglecting his wife. He is a chapter shy of finishing the manuscript when the sky falls: his laptop and backup CD are stolen! He sinks into a major life-event depression. No one in the family is spared the grief. His psychotherapist is about to recommend new and dangerous deep brain surgery when there’s word that With Hoops of Steel has been spotted in the bookstore. Will this push Kent deeper into his black hole, or will it put him on the road to recovery? But how can he prove the book is his? Hmm. His professor-friend Scott Navano knows. The turn of the millennium seemed to me as good a time as any to leave behind a lifetime of nose-to-the-grindstone adventures as WWII pilot, English teacher, and school superintendent in order to chase my favorite phantom—becoming an author. In the first scene of Manuscript Missing we get an early hint of how devastated amateur writer Kent Rowen would become if somehow his manuscript disappeared. Guess what. It happens. I hasten to mention that Angie, his wife, is also missing. We watch as the Rowens and their families cope with the crisis. We empathize with Kent and Angie in their deep depression, loneliness, and utter despair. We follow other characters chasing their phantoms, some similar, by coincidence I’m sure, to may own. We watch a psychoanalyst, a lawyer, and a literary critic at work—fragments, no doubt, of someone’s Walter Mitty dreams.

Book excerpt: Gary Ley's second novel is a compulsive psychological exploration of two obsessional characters forced together in rural Peru. José is a politics lecturer on the theoretical wing of Sendero Luminoso, the Marxist revolutionary group in Peru. Hugo is a Brit, an aeroplane salesman with a deal to tie up in Brazil. José is pre-occupied by rural poverty and reactionary government; Hugo by international capitalism and Henry Meiggs, an early example of it who built the Peruvian railway system in the nineteenth century. Both are cogs in larger ideologies. They meet briefly while José is in hiding following an assasination in which he took no part. Unknown to both of them their paths will cross again in the person of Julia, José's sister whom he recruited to the cause in her teens. This novel of contemplation is suddenly turned on its head when terrorist action intrudes a jarring shock for which neither José or Hugo are prepared and which demands action of which neither thought themselves capable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my desire that the individuals who read this book will go on a journey of self-discovery just like I did. This book is designed for us to understand that our teeth are more important than we realize and that having healthy teeth is the first step toward good health. Discrimination is the end result of prejudice, racism, and the wielding power of the world’s institutions. By institutions, I am referring to those giant buildings that seem to have heavy metal doors that are normally locked from the inside. The keeper of the keys is the system that has been set in place by the institution that allows one group to enter and, by the same token, locks other groups out. Behind the heavy metal doors is a picture on the wall with a perfect smile on it. And if your teeth are straight, white, perfect, and are all present, you will hear a big clinging sound. The dead bolt will slide to the left, and the door will open wide for you. It really does not matter what race you are. Anyone who has this perfect smile is granted the rite of passage in which the criteria have changed over the years. When I set out to write this book, my thoughts were with individuals who were suffering shame and others who were struggling with the plight of missing teeth. If we do not make our teeth a priority in our youth, they will not be around to serve us in our old age. Hopefully, parents reading this book can give their children a better start. My desire is that in the future, after reading this book, we will be more inclined to have compassion and understanding with individuals who are struggling with their dental issues.

Book excerpt: ***A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*** A New York Times Book Review “Editors’ Choice” Entertainment Weekly — Thriller Round-Up The Wall Street Journal — 5 Killer Books Hollywood Reporter — Hot Summer Books…16 Must Reads “This thriller’s all of your fave page-turners (think: Luckiest Girl Alive, The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl) rolled into one.” —TheSkimm “Both [Gillian] Flynn’s and Miranda’s main characters also reclaim the right of female characters to be more than victim or femme fatale… All the Missing Girls is set to become one of the best books of 2016.” —Los Angeles Review of Books “Extremely interesting…a novel that will probably be called Hitchcockian.” —The New York Times Book Review “Are you paying attention? You’ll need to be; this thriller will test your brain with its reverse chronological structure, and it’s a page-turner to boot.” —Elle Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in The Girl on the Train and Luckiest Girl Alive, Megan Miranda’s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women—a decade apart—told in reverse. It’s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne’s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched. The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne’s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby; Jackson works at the town bar; and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic’s younger neighbor and the group’s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic’s return, Annaleise goes missing. Told backwards—Day 15 to Day 1—from the time Annaleise goes missing, Nic works to unravel the truth about her younger neighbor’s disappearance, revealing shocking truths about her friends, her family, and what really happened to Corinne that night ten years ago. Like nothing you’ve ever read before, All the Missing Girls delivers in all the right ways. With twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends, you may think you’re walking a familiar path, but then Megan Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love.
