In the near future, direct dark matter detectors will offer a chance at observing dark matter non-gravitationally for the first time. In this thesis, formalisms are developed to analyze direct detection experiments and to quantify the extent to which properties of the dark matter can be determined. A range of non-standard assumptions about the dark matter are considered, including inelastic scattering, isospin violation and momentum dependent scattering. Bayesian inference is applied to realistic detector configurations to evaluate parameter estimation and model selection ability. A complete set of simplified models for spin-0, spin-1/2 and spin-1 dark matter candidates are formulated. The corresponding non-relativistic operators are found, and are used to derive observational signals for the simplified models. The ability to discern these simplified models with direct detection experiments is demonstrated. In the near future direct dark matter detectors will be sensitive to coherent neutrino scattering, which will limit the discovery potential of these experiments. It was found that eleven of the fourteen non-relativistic operators considered produce signals distinct from coherent scattering, and thus the neutrino background does not greatly affect the discovery potential in these cases.

Direct detection experiments are among the most promising methods of detecting particle dark matter through non-gravitational interactions. In this thesis, the usual assumptions made when calculating the event rate at direct detection experiments are examined. Varying astrophysical parameters and the dark matter velocity distribution leads to significant changes in acceptance regions and exclusion curves for scenarios in which the tail of the velocity distribution is sampled; this includes 'light dark matter' (mass less than 10 GeV) and 'inelastic dark matter'. The DAMA and CoGeNT collaborations both report an annual modulation in their event rate that they attribute to dark matter. Two analyses of these experiments are performed. In the first, it is shown that these experiments can be compatible with each other and with the constraints from other direct detection experiments. This requires some isospin violation in the couplings of dark matter to protons and neutrons and a small inelastic splitting to boost the modulation fraction. The second analysis provides a comparison of the modulation signals free from all astrophysical parameters, under the assumption that dark matter scatters elastically. Again it is found that some isospin violation and a boosted modulation fraction is required in order that DAMA and CoGeNT are consistent with all experiments. A boosted modulation fraction may arise from a velocity distribution different from the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, which is usually assumed. Finally, a supersymmetric theory in which the dark matter candidate is a mixture of left- and right-handed sneutrino is considered. This theory has many novel signatures at colliders, indirect detection and direct detection experiments.

Although very little is presently known about the physical properties of dark matter, its existence offers some of the most compelling evidence for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) scenario, the dark matter consists of particles that possess weak-scale interactions with the particles of the standard model, offering a compelling theoretical framework that allows us to understand the relic abundance of dark matter as a natural consequence of the thermal history of the early universe. From the perspective of particle physics phenomenology, the WIMP scenario is appealing for two additional reasons. First, many theories of BSM physics contain attractive WIMP candidates. Second, the weak-scale interactions between WIMPs and standard model particles imply the possibility of detecting scatterings between relic WIMPs and detector nuclei in direct detection experiments, products of WIMP annihilations at locations throughout the galaxy in indirect detection programs, and WIMP production signals at high-energy particle colliders. In this work, we use an effective field theory approach to study model-independent dark matter phenomenology in direct detection and collider experiments. The maverick dark matter scenario is defined by an effective field theory in which the WIMP is the only new particle within the energy range accessible to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Although certain assumptions are necessary to keep the problem tractable, we describe our WIMP candidate generically by specifying only its spin and dominant interaction form with standard model particles. Constraints are placed on the masses and coupling constants of the maverick WIMPs using the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) relic density measurement and direct detection exclusion data from both spin-independent (XENON100 and SuperCDMS) and spin-dependent (COUPP) experiments. We further study the distinguishability of maverick WIMP production signals at the Tevatron and the LHC--at its early and nominal configurations--using standard simulation packages, place constraints on maverick WIMP properties using existing collider data, and determine projected mass reaches in future data from both colliders. We find ourselves in a unique era of theoretically-motivated, high-precision dark matter searches that hold the potential to give us important insights, not only into the nature of dark matter, but also into the physics that lies beyond the standard model.

The author has also derived new perturbative QCD results to provide the definitive analysis of key Standard Model observables such as heavy quark scalar matrix elements of the nucleon. More elaborated models considering extended gauge structures are discussed further on, such as constructions involving generalized Chern-Simons couplings and a specific WIMP scenario motivated by some recently observed flavor anomalies related to the RK(*) observable. The second part of this thesis is devoted to the discussion of an alternative dark matter thermal production mechanism where an explicit realization of the Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs) paradigm is discussed in the context of a non-Abelian hidden gauge structure. In a last part, the possibility of producing non-thermally a dark matter component via the "freeze-in" mechanism was investigated and the strong impact of the postinationary reaheating stage of the universe on such constructions illustrated by the specific case where dark matter density production is mediated by a heavy spin-2 field in addition to the standard graviton.

In this thesis, I tackle various aspects of indirect searches for dark matter particles, which provide a complementary approach to direct detection or collider experiments. We are now entering into an era of instruments with outstanding capabilities, so it was timely to tackle the problem of the dark matter density profile at the centers of galaxies with novel methods, which motivated this thesis. Taking advantage of these technological advances, I investigate new ways of probing the very central part of dark matter halos, especially focusing on dark matter spikes, i.e. very strong enhancements of the dark matter density that can form around supermassive black holes. I show that we can go beyond standard dark matter searches by studying photon emission from electrons and positrons produced in dark matter annihilation processes. In this context, I describe a new cosmic-ray propagation technique to account for injection by spiky distributions at the centers of galaxies. I develop novel models of the diffuse emission in the central regions of galaxies, focusing not only on the center of the Milky Way, but on the central regions of other galaxies as well. This allows me to explain recently reported observations and make predictions for future observations.

The formulation of new search strategies and models is crucial in the hunt for physics beyond the Standard Model, and in this work we present three studies of new physics relevant for current and upcoming experiments. First, we study models that contain a singlet dark matter particle with cubic renormalizable couplings between standard model particles and `partner' particles with the same gauge quantum numbers as the standard model quark. The dark matter has spin 0, 1/2, or 1, and may or may not be its own antiparticle. Each model has 3 parameters: the masses of the dark matter and standard model partners, and the cubic coupling. Requiring the correct relic abundance gives a 2-dimensional parameter space where collider and direct detection constraints can be directly compared. We find that collider and direct detection searches are remarkably complementary for these models. Direct detection limits for the cases where the dark matter is not its own antiparticle require dark matter masses to be in the multi-TeV range, where they are extremely difficult to probe in collider experiments. The models where dark matter is its own antiparticle are strongly constrained by collider searches for monojet and jets + MET signals. These models are constrained by direct detection mainly near the limit where the dark matter and partner masses are nearly degenerate, where collider searches become more difficult. Second, we study the case where the singlet dark matter has trilinear couplings to leptons and a new ``lepton partner'' particle. The most sensitive collider probe is the search for leptons + MET, while the most sensitive direct detection channel is scattering from nuclei arising from loop diagrams. Collider and direct detection searches are highly complementary: colliders give the only meaningful constraint when dark matter is its own antiparticle, while direct detection is generally more sensitive if the dark matter is not its own antiparticle. Third, we study the constraints on new physics from Higgs production through vector boson fusion in the context of an effective field theory that preserves Standard Model gauge symmetries. We find that constraints on dimension-6 operators are significantly improved over those from the VBF signal strength by studying the Higgs transverse momentum distribution. Focusing on the O[subscript]HW operator, we find that boosted VBF decaying to photons yields constraints competitive with boosted WW production in the fully leptonic final state, and calculate projected limits for both at the 14 TeV LHC. The PT cuts required to maximize the reach of VBF searches are substantially softer, making the use of the effective field theory more robust than in the case of WW production which requires very high PT cuts to obtain similar limits.

Book excerpt: As is well known, the search for and eventual identification of dark matter in supersymmetry requires a simultaneous, multipronged approach with important roles played by the LHC as well as both direct and indirect dark matter detection experiments. We examine the capabilities of these approaches in the 19-parameter phenomenological MSSM which provides a general framework for complementarity studies of neutralino dark matter. We summarize the sensitivity of dark matter searches at the 7 and 8 (and eventually 14) TeV LHC, combined with those by Fermi, CTA, IceCube/DeepCore, COUPP, LZ and XENON. The strengths and weaknesses of each of these techniques are examined and contrasted and their interdependent roles in covering the model parameter space are discussed in detail. We find that these approaches explore orthogonal territory and that advances in each are necessary to cover the supersymmetric weakly interacting massive particle parameter space. We also find that different experiments have widely varying sensitivities to the various dark matter annihilation mechanisms, some of which would be completely excluded by null results from these experiments.

Book excerpt: In supersymmetric models with an unbroken R-symmetry (rather than only R-parity), the neutralinos are Dirac fermions rather than Majorana. In this article, we discuss the phenomenology of neutralino dark matter in such models, including the calculation of the thermal relic abundance, and constraints and prospects for direct and indirect searches. Due to the large elastic scattering cross sections with nuclei predicted in R-symmetric models, we are forced to consider a neutralino that is predominantly bino, with very little higgsino mixing. We find a large region of parameter space in which bino-like Dirac neutralinos with masses between 10 and 380 GeV can annihilate through slepton exchange to provide a thermal relic abundance in agreement with the observed cosmological density, without relying on coannihilations or resonant annihilations. The signatures for the indirect detection of Dirac neutralinos are very different than predicted in the Majorana case, with annihilations proceeding dominately to $\tau+̂ \tau-̂$, $\mu+̂ \mu-̂$ and $e+̂ e-̂$ final states, without the standard chirality suppression. And unlike Majorana dark matter candidates, Dirac neutralinos experience spin-independent scattering with nuclei through vector couplings (via $Z$ and squark exchange), leading to potentially large rates at direct detection experiments. These and other characteristics make Dirac neutralinos potentially interesting within the context of recent direct and indirect detection anomalies. We also discuss the case in which the introduction of a small Majorana mass term breaks the $R$-symmetry, splitting the Dirac neutralino into a pair of nearly degenerate Majorana states.
