Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defiant Diplomacy analyzes the relationship between the United States and Denmark as allies in World War II and the Cold War. Cast as a biography of Henrik Kauffmann (1888-1963), a Danish diplomat serving in Washington (1939-1958), the book reveals how the Roosevelt Administration's policy toward occupied Denmark was forced to address questions of paramount importance, particularly to Great Britain and Canada, regarding the general attitude of the neutral United States toward the war in Europe. The dramatic climax was President Roosevelt's secret decision in early 1941 to establish military bases in Greenland, the Danish colony that became a crucial steppingstone between the United States and Europe during World War II and a strategic focal point in the nuclear strategies of the Cold War.

Book Synopsis Analysing the Foreign Policy of Small States in the EU by : H. Larsen
Download or read book Analysing the Foreign Policy of Small States in the EU written by H. Larsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-08-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a distinct national foreign policy still be identified for small EU member states, and what accounts for the balance between national and EU foreign policy? Henrik Larsen develops an analytical framework for analyzing these questions and offers solutions through an empirical examination of the foreign policy of a small EU member state in the context of EU foreign policy - the case of Denmark. The book looks at seven policy areas: policy towards other EU member states, anti-terrorism, development, the Balkans, Africa, Latin America and trade. On the basis of the empirical study, the implications for the theoretical study of national foreign policy in an EU Context are outlined. It is suggested that we need a new, mixed approach to foreign policy analysis within the EU taking into account the nature of the policy area concerned and national conceptions of actorness.
Book Synopsis U.S. Strategy in the Asian Century by : Abraham M. Denmark
Download or read book U.S. Strategy in the Asian Century written by Abraham M. Denmark and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Indo-Pacific emerges as the world’s most strategically consequential region and competition with China intensifies, the United States must adapt its approach if it seeks to preserve its power and sustain regional stability and prosperity. Yet as China grows more powerful and aggressive and the United States appears increasingly unreliable, the Indo-Pacific has become riven with uncertainty. These dynamics threaten to undermine the region’s unprecedented peace and prosperity. U.S. Strategy in the Asian Century offers vital perspective on the future of power dynamics in the Indo-Pacific, focusing on the critical roles that American allies and partners can play. Abraham M. Denmark argues that these alliances and partnerships represent indispensable strategic assets for the United States. They will be necessary in any effort by Washington to compete with China, promote prosperity, and preserve a liberal order in the Indo-Pacific. Blending academic rigor and practical policy experience, Denmark analyzes the future of major-power competition in the region, with an eye toward American security interests. He details a pragmatic approach for the United States to harness the power of its allies and partners to ensure long-term regional stability and successfully navigate the complexities of the new era.
Book Synopsis China and Nordic Diplomacy by : Bjørnar Sverdrup-Thygeson
Download or read book China and Nordic Diplomacy written by Bjørnar Sverdrup-Thygeson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to explore Nordic approaches to China and the idea of sub-regional diplomacy. China’s multi-tiered approach to Europe can be seen vividly in the Nordic sub-region, which has been engaging Beijing through a variety of different means corresponding to the political and economic structures found in the Nordic states. In some areas, a specific Nordic approach can be observed, including areas related to economic cooperation, Arctic diplomacy, and institution-building. However, the Nordic states also have widely differing historical experiences with China leading up to the present day. Each of the Nordic states has also had to balance their China relations with those of the EU and other major players such as the United States. With case studies on the EU, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, this volume addresses the question of a specifically Nordic approach to Chinese relations. It explores not only the contributions of the Nordics to China relations, but also adds to the greater study of sub-regional approaches to Chinese diplomacy at a time when Sino-European relations are arguably at their most complex. This book will be of much interest to students of Chinese politics, Nordic politics, diplomacy and IR in general.

All other delegations produced as well these so-called policy papers. In this paper we explained our point of view, as agreed with our department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Beate Schneider Position Paper of Denmark Andreas Lorek Honourable Delegate of Denmark Honourable Delegate of Denmark Denmark is an active contributor to and participant of the international system. Our country has always taken its place among the world community concerning political challenges and tasks. It has supported the fight against terrorism since its beginning and will not give up securing a safe and just environment. The Islamic Republic of Iran is one country in the world threatening freedom and democracy and therefore Denmark, together with its allies, has to find a peaceful solution to this problem. In the past couple of months Denmark has experienced a never-experienced wave of violence following the publishing of comics with an Islamic topic in a Danish newspaper. The publisher of these comics has clearly not thought about the consequences its actions would have. The concerned Danish newspaper has offered its apology to all Muslims for the offence caused by the drawings. Denmark is a very tolerant country which enables its citizens to live according to their cultures and believes. We tolerate the feelings and ways of living of all inhabitants of our country. In Denmark there is a genuine respect for the religious feelings of other people. However, there are certain values that we are willing to defend against people that threaten them such as democracy, freedom and safety for our and other innocent citizens.

Book Synopsis Roadblock Politics by : Peer Schouten
Download or read book Roadblock Politics written by Peer Schouten and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are so many roadblocks in Central Africa that it is hard to find a road that does not have one. Based on research in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR), Peer Schouten maps more than a thousand of these roadblocks to show how communities, rebels and state security forces forge resistance and power out of control over these narrow points of passage. Schouten reveals the connections between these roadblocks in Central Africa and global supply chains, tracking the flow of multinational corporations and UN agencies alike through them, to show how they encapsulate a form of power, which thrives under conditions of supply chain capitalism. In doing so, he develops a new lens through which to understand what drives state formation and conflict in the region, offering a radical alternative to explanations that foreground control over minerals, territory or population as key drivers of Central Africa's violent history.
Book Synopsis Scandinavia in the First World War by : Claes Ahlund
Download or read book Scandinavia in the First World War written by Claes Ahlund and published by Nordic Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denmark, Norway, and Sweden all managed to stay out of the First World War, but all three were deeply affected by it. When the trade war and blockades came into play, the Scandinavian countries were subject to relentless pressure. Inflation and shortages of consumer goods caused widespread hardship and, ultimately, political unrest. The result was the widening social divide and bitter political divisions that marked the inter-war years. In Scandinavia in the First World War, the authors analyse aspects of the military and economic consequences of the Great War, and explore how intellectuals engaged in political propaganda and the peace movement. They also look at the experiences of the groups who came into immediate contact with the war: seamen, journalists, volunteer nurses, and thousands of Scandinavian soldiers. With a comparative introduction to the history of the Scandinavian countries during the First World War and detailed case-studies, this volume presents a wide-ranging survey of the situation in the neutral Scandinavian states. With its cross-disciplinary approach, it touches on cultural, social, and military history, as well as literary and minority studies.

Download or read book Danish-American Diplomacy written by Soren J. M. P. Fogdall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Danish-American Diplomacy: 1776 1920 This work was originally intended to cover the diplomatic relations between the United States and Denmark from the Revolutionary War to the end of the nineteenth century. Because of the recent purchase of the Danish West Indies, a short chapter has been added in which a brief survey has been made of the leading events that have taken place during the last twenty years. An attempt has been made to arrange the chapters of this volume in chronological order, but it has been found necessary at times to allow them to overlap. In preparing this volume the author wished to use the files of the Department of State at Washington, D. C., but was unable to gain access to them. Having asked for permission the following reply was received: The Depart ments regrets to say that it has discouraged application to do research work of this character as it has not the facilities or space to properly supervise and examine the work, and that therefore it is reluctantly compelled to decline your request at this time. It has thus been necessary to rely on the material found in the various libraries and archives mentioned below. In the city of Des Moines, Iowa, the author has worked in the Des Moines University Library, the Iowa State Law Library, and the Library of the Historical Department of Iowa. Most of the material in foreign languages has been obtained in the Library of Congress at Washington, D. C. The libraries of the University of Iowa and of the State Historical Society of Iowa, both located at Iowa City, have been of much value in verifying references.
