Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although microwave mixers play a critical role in wireless communication and other microwave applications employing frequency conversion circuits, engineers find that most books on this subject emphasize theoretical aspects, rather than practical applications. That’s about to change with the forthcoming release of Microwave Mixer Technology and Applications. Based on a review of over one thousand patents on mixers and frequency conversion, authors Bert Henderson and Edmar Camargo have written a comprehensive book for mixer designers who want solid ideas for solving their own design challenges. Many of the important and most interesting patents and related circuits are discussed in the several application oriented chapters. In addition, important contributions from the technical literature are included to provide a solid theoretical foundation. This book contains both introductory and advanced material about active and passive mixers that use bipolar transistor, FET, or diode switching devices. Theory and design details are presented for dozens of important mixer designs, with practical application information derived from the authors’ decades of experience.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a simple approach for optimizing the dimensions of PHEMT diodes as well as predicting their mixer performance up to millimeter wave frequencies. It also introduces a new diode model and compares its properties with previous conventional models. The simulation results are compared with experiments carried out with a single ended diode mixer at Ku-band.

This book was released on 1910 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated design philosophy which combines physical device modelling and circuit simulation is applied for the design of Schottky-diode frequency multipliers for millimeter-wave applications. The physical model is based on the drift-diffudion theory. It also includes self-consistently image force lowering, tunnelling transport, current dependent recombination velocity at the Schottky contact and impact-ionization. This coupling enables to concurrently optimize the device electrical and geometrical parameters together with achievable output power, conversion efficiency and the required loads at the specific harmonics.

Book excerpt: The last research frontier in high frequency electronics now lies in the so-called THz (or submillimeter-wave) regime between the traditional microwave and infrared domains. Significant scientific and technical challenges within the terahertz (THz) frequency regime have recently motivated an array of new research activities. During the last few years, major research programs have emerged that are focused on advancing the state of the art in THz frequency electronic technology and on investigating novel applications of THz frequency sensing. This book serves as a detailed reference for the new THz frequency technological advances that are emerging across a wide spectrum of sensing and technology areas.

Book excerpt: The microwave and millimeter wave frequency range is nowadays widely exploited in a large variety of fields including (wireless) communications, security, radar, spectroscopy, but also astronomy and biomedical, to name a few. This Special Issue focuses on the interaction between the nanoscale dimensions and centimeter to millimeter wavelengths. This interaction has been proven to be efficient for the design and fabrication of devices showing enhanced performance. Novel contributions are welcome in the field of devices based on nanoscaled geometries and materials. Applications cover, but not are limited to, electronics, sensors, signal processing, imaging and metrology, all exploiting nanoscale/nanotechnology at microwave and millimeter waves. Contributions can take the form of short communications, regular or review papers.

Book excerpt: For years waveguide-type mixers were the only ones available at frequencies above 18 GHz. However, more recently design techniques that were previously considered only suitable at microwave frequencies have been extended to millimeterwave frequencies. These developments can be separated into two groups. True balanced mixers in waveguide have been built using packaged diodes combined with coaxial IF circuits. These mixers differ from conventional balanced mixers in that they do not employ a separate hybrid such as a short-slot hybrid or a magic tee. Rather the diodes are arranged in a bridge circuit thus leading to a compact mixer with excellent LO-RF isolation. This type of mixer is capable of covering entire waveguide bands and high IF frequencies. The second development of importance is the emergence of mixers using integrated circuit techniques at millimeter-wave frequencies. These developments have shown that balanced and image reject mixers are feasible using microstrip on sapphire, quartz and Duroid up to and beyond 60 GHz.

Full of tips and insights from seasoned industry veterans, Microwave Circuit Design offers practical, proven advice on improving the design quality of microwave passive and active circuits-while cutting costs and time. Covering all levels of microwave circuit design from the elementary to the very advanced, the book systematically presents computer-aided methods for linear and nonlinear designs used in the design and manufacture of microwave amplifiers, oscillators, and mixers. Using the newest CAD tools, the book shows how to design transistor and diode circuits, and also details CAD's usefulness in microwave integrated circuit (MIC) and monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) technology. Applications of nonlinear SPICE programs, now available for microwave CAD, are described. State-of-the-art coverage includes microwave transistors (HEMTs, MODFETs, MESFETs, HBTs, and more), high-power amplifier design, oscillator design including feedback topologies, phase noise and examples, and more. The techniques presented are illustrated with several MMIC designs, including a wideband amplifier, a low-noise amplifier, and an MMIC mixer. This unique, one-stop handbook also features a major case study of an actual anticollision radar transceiver, which is compared in detail against CAD predictions; examples of actual circuit designs with photographs of completed circuits; and tables of design formulae.
