Book excerpt: El camaron rosado con mancha, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis, tiene amplia distribucion en las costas venezolanas e importancia economica en la pesqueria de arrastre industrial. Se hizo una evaluacion de la historia de la pesqueria (1970-2003), y un analisis de la dinamica poblacional de esta especie en Margarita y el estado Sucre (1997-2003), con el proposito de plantear sugerencias que optimicen el manejo pesquero. La informacion sobre capturas y esfuerzo fue dada por INSOPESCA e INIA y los datos sobre estructura de tallas de los desembarques de procesadoras. Se estimo el esfuerzo adecuado para esta pesqueria asi como el RMS, en base a modelos de BIODYN. Trimestralmente fue estimado el tamano de la poblacion de camarones por el metodo de poblacion virtual, de Jones basado en tallas, y se examino la asociacion entre velocidad del viento, precipitacion y descarga del rio Orinoco con los cambios en la abundancia. El esfuerzo optimo se estimo sobre la base de un analisis de rendimiento por recluta. Los modelos de rendimiento excedentario estaticos y dinamico sugieren rendimientos maximos sostenidos de 650 223 t anuales pero con niveles de esfuerzo pesquero apreciablemente variables."

Book excerpt: Management of artisanal fisheries in coastal lagoons and estuaries is treated in three broad categories -- regulatory management, non-regulatory management, and interactions between fisheries or fishery interests. Regulation of artisanal fisheries in coastal lagoons and estuaries by government authority is hampered for several reasons. Technical and financial constraints on government severely limit enforcement capabilities. Socio-economic considerations, chiefly the lack of alternative employment opportunities for fishermen, preclude the adoption of many of the classical regulatory management techniques. As a means to complement or supplement management by central government authority, revitalization of local traditional authority is advocated. Non-regulatory management, the application of methods which increase capture and culture fishery potential through manipulation of the environment, is illustrated by various kinds of hydraulic engineering, predator control, stocking, artificial nursery areas, and brush-park fisheries. Interactions between fisheries or fishery interests is treated at several levels. Considered are competition between groups of fishermen of different ethnic and economic backgrounds, interactions between artisanal capture fisheries and aquaculture, and competition between artisanal fisheries of coastal lagoons and estuaries and off-shore shore industrial fisheries which fish the same stocks.

Book excerpt: La presente investigación proporciona información sobre algunos aspectos de la dinámica poblacional del Camarón Rosado, Penaeus notialis para las zonas sur y norte del Caribe colombiano, mediante la distribución de frecuencias de longitud por sexo y zona. Se analizaron un total de 8107 individuos; distribuidos en 6209 para la zona sur y 1898 en la zona norte. Se determinaron relaciones básicas como longitud cola-peso cola, longitud cola-peso total y peso cola-peso total. Además, se estimaron parámetros de crecimiento mediante la curva de Von Bertalanffy, mortalidad natural a partir de la ecuación de Pauly para camarones pendidos, mortalidad por pesca y total a partir de la curva de captura linealizada, patrón de desove, reclutamiento y tasas de explotación. También se determina tallas medias de madurez. En la zona sur se establece dos picos de reclutamiento en diciembre y marzo, también un desove continuo durante el tiempo de muestreo, mientras que en la zona norte se observó un solo pico de reclutamiento entre diciembre y enero, el desove máximo fue en octubre. De acuerdo con el análisis de varianza de los datos morfométricos se concluye que se presentan diferencias poblacionales entre las zonas de pesca sur y norte.
