Book excerpt: Poor adaptations of acrylic resin denture bases to the supporting tissues markedly decrease denture retention. Several denture base resin and processing techniques have been introduced to the profession, each claiming to produce a more accurate base. Microwave processing techniques has been introduced claims to minimize the dimensional changes. This purpose of this study was to compare the dimensional accuracy of three denture base resins when processed both by conventional water bath method and by use of microwave energy. Three Poly (MethylMethacrylate) heat cure resins selected for this study. These resins were processed by conventional water bath technique for 1 1/2 hours at 75 degree & half hour at 100 degree and by microwave energy for 3 mins at 500W. The measurements of acrylic resin denture base specimens were compared with the measurements of master metal die dimension keeping it as a standard measurement. The mean values of the difference in the points compared were calculated, & compared to each other to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between them at the 0.05 probability level using the students' independent test for pooled variances

Book excerpt: This text provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the treatment of patients with dentures, a topic rarely covered in other books, despite the fact that thousands of patients require them. It offers a thorough understanding of the functional and esthetic implications of edentulism, as well as information on the behavioral and clinical aspects of diagnosis and treatment. With topics ranging from treatment modalities to tooth-supported prostheses to both immediate and complete dentures, this valuable resource gives the basic information necessary to treat the edentulous patient. This edition continues to focus on implant prosthodontics, as more and more people choose to make this simple, effective, affordable option a part of their treatment. This text addresses the different types of edentulous patients, including thorough discussions of both short- and long-term patients. Detailed coverage of the elderly and/or edentulous patients provides the reader with the specialized knowledge needed to treat these groups. Over 800 images accompanying procedures, concepts, and techniques enhance understanding and comprehension of each topic presented. Material on achieving a satisfactory esthetic effect emphasizes the importance of satisfying the patient. Topics on related and supplemental procedures feature information on overdentures, immediate dentures, and single complete dentures. This title has been revised more than any other book on the subject, in order to maintain its long-standing value and recognition as an authoritative source on prosthodontics for the edentulous. The condensed format provides relevant information that is conveniently sized and reasonably priced. Clear and concise language makes even the most difficult subjects and procedures easy to follow. The bibliography lists at the end of each chapter direct readers to additional literature on the topics. The diverse and distinguished editorial/contributor pool lends credibility and experience to each topic. The content has been reorganized to make the material more concise and easier to read. Brand new chapters on temporomandibular disorders, materials prescribed, and the current and future direction in implant prosthodontics keep the reader aware of developments in the field. As reflected in the changed title, this edition has been expanded and updated to emphasize the growing importance of implant-supported prostheses. The reorganization and consolidation of chapters into four major sections enhances readability. Eight new contributors and 4 new editors offer a fresh perspective.

Phillips’ Science of Dental Materials, 13th Edition provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on the materials used in cosmetic and restorative procedures in dentistry. It introduces the physical and chemical properties that are related to selection and use of dental biomaterials, including their composition, mechanical properties, manipulative variables, and the performance of dental restorations and prostheses. This edition adds three new chapters and hundreds of new full-color photographs. Written by dental scientists Chiayi Shen and H. Ralph Rawls along with prosthodontist Josephine Esquivel-Upshaw, this leading text/reference helps dentists select the right materials for oral procedures and helps dental labs ensure high-quality restorations. 500 full-color photos and illustrations show concepts, dental instruments, and restorations. Key terms are defined at the beginning of each chapter, covering terminology related to dental biomaterials and science. Critical thinking questions stimulate thinking and emphasize important concepts and principles. Logical, five-part organization of chapters makes the content easier to read and understand, with units on General Classes and Properties of Dental Materials, Direct Restorative Materials, Indirect Restorative Materials, Fabrication of Prostheses, and Assessing Dental Restorations. Book excerpt: The 11th edition of this leading reference is an outstanding, scientifically based source of information in the field of dental materials science. It presents up-to-date information on materials that are used in the dental office and laboratory every day, emphasizing practical, clinical use, as well as the physical, chemical, and biological properties of materials. Extensive new clinical photographs in this edition illustrate the topics, and color plates are integrated close to related concepts as they're discussed in each chapter. A new glossary of key terms found at the beginning of every chapter defines terms in the appropriate context of the chapter's discussion. Also in this edition, critical thinking questions throughout the book stimulate the readers' curiosity on specific topics, test their existing knowledge, and heighten their awareness of important or controversial subjects. Content outlines at the beginning of each chapter provide a quick reference for specific topics. The roles played by key organizations in ensuring the safety and efficacy of dental materials and devices are described - such as the American Dental Association, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the International Organization for Standardization, and the Fédération Dentaire Internationale. Up-to-date Selected Readings are presented at the end of each chapter to direct readers to supplemental literature on each topic. Numerous boxes and tables throughout summarize and illustrate key concepts and compare characteristics and properties of various dental materials. Distinguished contributors lend their credibility and experience to the text. Content has been completely updated to include information on the most current dental materials available. Glossaries at the beginning of each chapter define key terms used within the context of that chapter. Revised artwork gives this edition a fresh look, with high-quality illustrations and clinical photos to aid in the visualization of materials and procedures described. Reorganization and consolidation of chapters into four major book parts presents the material in a more efficient way: Part I describes the principles of materials science that control the performance of dental materials in dental laboratories, research laboratories, student dental clinics, public health clinics, and private practice clinics. Part II focuses on impression materials, gypsum products, dental waxes, casting investments and procedures, and finishing and polishing abrasives and procedures. Part III provides an updated scientific and applied description of the composition, manipulation principles, properties, and clinical performance of bonded restorations, restorative resins, dental cements, dental amalgams, and direct-filling golds. Part IV presents a basic and applied description of materials that are processed in a laboratory or dental clinic. Critical thinking questions appear in every chapter to stimulate thinking and classroom discussion. The overall design has been improved to provide a more visually appealing format.
