Book excerpt: "Dosage calculation is taught to every Pre-Licensure Nursing student (LPN to BSN), typically as part of a dosage calculation course or as part of the fundamentals course. There are 3 standard methods of dosage calculation, dimensional analysis, ratio-proportion, and formula method. Dimensional analysis is the simplest and most accurate dosage calculation method in use. It leverages one equation in order to complete the calculation. Anna Curren applies her experience, knowledge, and proven method to continue to refine and update content to meet today's student's learning styles with the latest refinement of the dimensional analysis method. Her conversational writing style brings the students to a safe place in the often intimating realm of math. All content has been reviewed and updated appropriately. There have been significant updates to the TOC, rearranged chapters, new content and removed content throughout. A new chapter has been added in IV Therapy. The dimensional analysis chapter has been moved forward to encourage both student and instructor to get to the heart of DA and establish early understanding of the concept in order to apply appropriately. All revision changes have been re-reviewed by the author and JBL team in combination with the market reviews to ensure the next edition is even more successful than the last"--

Book excerpt: Dosage calculation can be very challenging and intimidating for students, however, veteran author, Anna Curren breaks down this subject using the dimensional analysis method which reduces all calculations into a single, easy-to-solve equation. This takes the fear-factor out of manual math altogether. Many students have raved about how previous editions of this text helped them through their medical math course and succeed in clinical practice. The Sixth Edition of Dimensional Analysis for Meds: Refocusing on Essential Metric Calculations has been streamlined to present only the essential information. The first chapter begins with an overview of the metric system; as Curren states, 98% of all calculations involve metric measures. The text is structured to feature content in small instructional steps followed by assessments to reinforce what has been learned. To prevent annual hospital drug dose errors, the latest drug dosage abbreviations and metric notations are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: uzie King Taylor made a remarkable journey from slavery to freedom through service with the first black Civil War regiment to fight for freedom in America's history. Written toward the end of her life, her memories are not those of a battle veteran, though she helped care for plenty of shattered bodies, heard the guns, and saw rebel soldiers at close range. At risk to her life and freedom, she served throughout the war as a teenaged nurse. Assigned as a laundress, she actually did very little laundering but instead played an important role in the care and spirits of black soldiers and their white commanders. Her depth of feeling about the past and her passionate hopes for the future bring her writing to life. This is an important contribution to American history that is made available in this volume for the first time for e-readers. Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) was an African American army nurse with the first black Union troops during the Civil War. She wrote the only memoir of an African-American woman who had experience with combat troops. She was also the first African American to teach in a school for former slaves in Georgia. There is great beauty in some of the small details of Suzie King's recollections. She briefly ponders in amazement her ability to acclimate to the horrors of war. "It seems strange how our aversion to seeing suffering is overcome in war, how we are able to see the most sickening sights, such as men with their limbs blown off and mangled by the deadly shells, without a shudder; and instead of turning away, how we hurry to assist in alleviating their pain, bind up their wounds, and press the cool water to their parched lips, with feelings only of sympathy and pity." She also writes of her delight in becoming proficient at field-stripping, cleaning, and shooting a musket. Her final chapter is an eloquent plea for civil rights and a recognition that emancipation's promise was still a distant goal. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text emphasizes the simplicity of the dimensional analysis method to help even those students with math anxiety minimize or eliminate medication calculation errors. It begins with a comprehensive review of general math skills and an explanation of basic dimensional analysis methodology. The book focuses on the analysis and setup of practice problems, formulation of a reasonable answer, and evaluation of the answer. This one-of-a-kind text is designed for nursing students at all levels, including graduate nurses and practicing nurses who want a refresher. It is an appropriate text selection for agency in-service programs as well as for physician assistant medication math courses. A companion CD-ROM packaged with the text offers additional practice problems. A self-assessment test precedes the comprehensive math review in Chapter 1, promoting a strong math foundation. Chapter 2 introduces the dimensional analysis method and includes several basic practice problems, facilitating consistent application of the method throughout the text. The analysis and setup of practice problems increases comprehension, reduces errors, and complements use of the dimensional analysis method. To help reduce medication errors, the text follows JCAHO and ISMP recommendations regarding avoidance of ambiguous abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols. Each chapter begins with a quick overview of chapter contents to orient students as they prepare to read and study the material. The text's full-color design includes a special margin section in which students can work out practice problems on the spot. Rapid Practice exercises follow each main concept, allowing students to review even when their study time is limited or frequently interrupted. Test Tips enhance comprehension and improve students' test-taking skills and comfort level. Selected Mnemonics are supplied to facilitate memorization and conserve learning time. Red Arrow Alerts call attention to critical math concepts and patient-safety theory as well as to key nursing practice issues. FAQs and Answers are derived from students' actual classroom questions. They are particularly helpful to students who are studying outside of a traditional classroom environment. Ask Yourself questions help students comprehend and synthesize content. Communication boxes, which present sample nurse-patient and nurse-prescriber dialogues, illustrate clinical applications of medication administration. Cultural boxes describe selected math-notation and medication-related cultural practices. Clinical Relevance boxes show how abstract concepts, such as legal issues, apply to everyday clinical practice. Website addresses and other useful references are provided where applicable. Two chapter finals are included at the end of each chapter, one multiple-choice format and one traditional format, with answers provided in the back of the book. Two comprehensive finals, one using an NCLEX examination-style multiple-choice format and one following a traditional format, test the major concepts covered in the text and offer an opportunity for additional practice. An answer key in the back of the book contains step-by-step solutions to the Rapid Practice exercises, chapter finals, and comprehensive text finals, allowing the student to pinpoint specific areas for further review.
