Book excerpt: Summary: In problems involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer of gases, the viscosities, thermal conductivities, and diffusion coefficients are required. Direct measurements are in any event time consuming--they may be impossible. Alignment charts (nomographs) for calculating the low-pressure transport properties of nonpolar gases and gas mixtures are presented. Calculations for pure gases are based on the rigorous kinetic theory of gases as applied to a realistic intermolecular force law. Mixture viscosities and conductivities are calculated from good approximations derived from rigorous theory. Properties can be calculated quickly with a precision of 2 percent or better. Accuracy depends on how well the constants characterizing the intermolecular force law are known; if constants are derived from experimental data, results should be accurate to 5 percent or better. Force constants for 65 gases are tabulated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic and bestselling landmark publication, originally published in 1965, examines the dynamic mechanisms, fundamental principles, and physical properties of various chromatographic procedures. It offers methods to characterize, identify, and predict chromatographic phenomena - providing strategies to select the most appropriate separation tools and techniques for specific applications in chemistry, physics, biology, and forensic and environmental science. Written by a world-renowned pioneer in the field, Dynamics of Chromatography contains many worked equations and real-world examples in gas and liquid chromatography. It includes numerous schematic figures for visualization of key concepts, introduces the means to control migration rate differences and zone spreading, and presents a detailed random-walk model for clarification of column processes. It also analyzes flow, diffusion, and kinetic events, stresses the link between theory and practice, and summarizes mathematical quantities and parameters.

Book excerpt: Tables are presented based on the Lennard-Jones 6-12 potential for nonpolar molecules to be used in the representation of second and third virial coefficients and equation-of-state corrections for enthalpy, entropy, specific heats at constant volume and at constant pressure, the ratio of specific heats, the isentropic expansion coefficient, and the velocity of sound. The treatment for effects involving three molecules jointly uses an empirical adjustment of the Lennard-Jones force parameters within a cluster of three independently of the value for an isolated pair. A graphical correlation of ratios of these parameters with the critical constants is also shown which permits better estimates for compact nonpolar molecules with known critical constants but with limited data of state.

Book excerpt: In the present monograph, we develop the kinetic theory of transport phenomena and relaxation processes in the flows of reacting gas mixtures and discuss its applications to strongly non-equilibrium conditions. The main attention is focused on the influence of non-equilibrium kinetics on gas dynamics and transport properties. Closed systems of fluid dynamic equations are derived from the kinetic equations in different approaches. We consider the most accurate approach taking into account the state-to-state kinetics in a flow, as well as simplified multi-temperature and one-temperature models based on quasi-stationary distributions. Within these approaches, we propose the algorithms for the calculation of the transport coefficients and rate coefficients of chemical reactions and energy exchanges in non-equilibrium flows; the developed techniques are based on the fundamental kinetic theory principles. The theory is applied to the modeling of non-equilibrium flows behind strong shock waves, in the boundary layer, and in nozzles. The comparison of the results obtained within the frame of different approaches is presented, the advantages of the new state-to-state kinetic model are discussed, and the limits of validity for simplified models are established. The book can be interesting for scientists and graduate students working on physical gas dynamics, aerothermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, non-equilibrium physical-chemical kinetics, and kinetic theory of gases.
