Inundated with seemingly insurmountable piles of papers to read, respond to, and grade, many teachers often find themselves struggling to balance differentiated, individualized feedback with the one resource they are already overextended on—time. Matthew Johnson offers classroom-tested solutions that not only alleviate the feedback-burnout cycle, but also lead to significant growth for students. These time-saving strategies built on best practices for feedback help to improve relationships, ignite motivation, and increase student ownership of learning. Flash Feedback also takes teachers to the next level of strategic feedback by sharing: How to craft effective, efficient, and more memorable feedback Strategies for scaffolding students through the meta-cognitive work necessary for real revision A plan for how to create a culture of feedback, including lessons for how to train students in meaningful peer response Downloadable online tools for teacher and student use Moving beyond the theory of working smarter, not harder, Flash Feedback works deeper by developing practices for teacher efficiency that also boost effectiveness by increasing students’ self-efficacy, improving the clarity of our messages, and ultimately creating a classroom centered around meaningful feedback.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study was conducted to explore the connection between student teaching and the first year of teaching; to determine the level of preparation first year teachers felt as a result of their student teaching experience; and to discover the factors that contribute to the difficulties that many first year teachers face. For this study, novice teachers were asked to reflect upon the transition between their student teaching experience and their first year of teaching. In-depth interviews were conducted with twelve teachers at the conclusion of their first year of teaching. Follow-up focus groups with the same participants were arranged to further investigate the themes that emerged in the interviews. During data analysis, the use of field notes and fully transcribed audiotapes assisted the researcher in unveiling eleven major themes in the collected data. Through exploration of the eleven themes and sub-issues, four conclusions were construed. Foremost, a positive student teaching experience is essential to the success of first year teaching and commitment to the profession. Second, a more inclusive student teaching experience and more extensive field experiences are needed. Third, professional relationships during student teaching and the first year of teaching have great impact on novice teachers. Finally, a host of unnecessary tribulations during the first year of teaching can be greatly reduced. Based on the conclusions of the research, several implications for teacher educators and administrators, as well as suggestions for future research, are delineated to conclude this study. For teacher educators, it is recommended that they study the factors contributing to a positive student teaching experience and work to develop a positive, wholly effective experience for all student teachers; carefully choose and train cooperating teachers; ensure their student teachers' acculturation into their schools; increase the number of and diversity of field experiences; and create a well-planned senior seminar course. Implications for administrators include contact with student teachers, implementing a practical induction and mentoring program, and curtailing the expenses incurred for first year teachers. In addition to these areas, further research is suggested regarding the connection between student teaching and teacher retention, lengthening the student teaching experience, and the possibility of an extended learning period beyond the student teaching assignment.

What is the role of intuitive models in understanding, learning and teaching mathematics? Are there differences between elementary and advanced mathematical thinking? Why can't students prove? What are the characteristics of teachers' ways of knowing? This book focuses on various types of knowledge that are significant for learning and teaching mathematics. The first part defines, discusses and contrasts psychological, philosophical and didactical issues related to various types of knowledge involved in the learning of mathematics. The second part describes ideas about forms of mathematical knowledge that are important for teachers to know and ways of implementing such ideas in preservice and in-service education. The chapters provide a wide overview of current thinking about mathematics learning and teaching which is of interest for researchers in mathematics education and mathematics educators. Topics covered include the role of intuition in mathematics learning and teaching, the growth from elementary to advanced mathematical thinking, the significance of genres and rhetoric for the learning of mathematics and the characterization of teachers' ways of knowing.

Book excerpt: Britt (1998) indicated that to get to the heart of the complex issues first year teachers face, it is necessary to give first year teachers an opportunity to tell their own stories of their experiences as neophytes. The purpose of this study was to share the experiences of first year teachers. Of particular interest was how well these first year teachers believed their teacher preparation program had prepared them. The research question posed for this study was: How do graduates of Mississippi State University describe their first year teaching experience? A multiple-case design was used in this research study. Because this research was exploratory and descriptive, and because it had multiple cases, the replication approach to multiple-case studies was employed. The researcher was the instrument used for the collection of data. Five first year teachers participated in this study. All graduated from Mississippi State University and were teaching for the first time during the 2003-2004 school year. Six major themes emerged from the data. These themes were: (a) a feeling of being overwhelmed, (b) dealing with student misbehavior, (c) concern for student learning, (d) ineffective mentoring, (e) understanding the local culture, particularly in the area of discipline, and (f) lack of commitment to remain in the teaching profession. Three additional concerns of three participants emerged as well. These were: (a) negative student teaching experience, (b) conflict with parents, and (c) difficulties with other professionals. Recommendations included: (a) re-examining the practicum experience throughout the teacher education program, (b) implementing a follow-up program for graduates of the teacher education program, (c) re-examining the critical needs scholarship, and (d) implementing a study concerning student teacher placement.
