Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time chemistry students are ready to study physical chemistry, they’ve completed mathematics courses through calculus. But a strong background in mathematics doesn’t necessarily equate to knowledge of how to apply that mathematics to solving physicochemical problems. In addition, in-depth understanding of modern concepts in physical chemistry requires knowledge of mathematical concepts and techniques beyond introductory calculus, such as differential equations, Fourier series, and Fourier transforms. This results in many physical chemistry instructors spending valuable lecture time teaching mathematics rather than chemistry. Barrante presents both basic and advanced mathematical techniques in the context of how they apply to physical chemistry. Many problems at the end of each chapter test students’ mathematical knowledge. Designed and priced to accompany traditional core textbooks in physical chemistry, Applied Mathematics for Physical Chemistry provides students with the tools essential for answering questions in thermodynamics, atomic/molecular structure, spectroscopy, and statistical mechanics.

Book excerpt: This book presents topics of science and engineering which occur in nature or are part of daily life. It describes phenomena which are modelled by partial differential equations, relating to physical variables like mass, velocity and energy, etc. to their spatial and temporal variations. The author has chosen topics representing his career-long interests, including the flow of fluids and gases, granular flows, biological processes like pattern formation on animal skins, kinetics of rarified gases and semiconductor devices. Each topic is presented in its scientific or engineering context, followed by an introduction of applicable mathematical models in the form of partial differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One might say that ordinary differential equations (notably, in Isaac Newton's analysis of the motion of celestial bodies) had a central role in the development of modern applied mathematics. This book is devoted to research articles which build upon this spirit: combining analysis with the applications of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). ODEs arise across a spectrum of applications in physics, engineering, geophysics, biology, chemistry, economics, etc., because the rules governing the time-variation of relevant fields is often naturally expressed in terms of relationships between rates of change. ODEs also emerge in stochastic models--for example, when considering the evolution of a probability density function--and in large networks of interconnected agents. The increasing ease of numerically simulating large systems of ODEs has resulted in a plethora of publications in this area; nevertheless, the difficulty of parametrizing models means that the computational results by themselves are sometimes questionable. Therefore, analysis cannot be ignored. This book comprises articles that possess both interesting applications and the mathematical analysis driven by such applications.

Book excerpt: This Second Edition of the go-to reference combines the classical analysis and modern applications of applied mathematics for chemical engineers. The book introduces traditional techniques for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs), adding new material on approximate solution methods such as perturbation techniques and elementary numerical solutions. It also includes analytical methods to deal with important classes of finite-difference equations. The last half discusses numerical solution techniques and partial differential equations (PDEs). The reader will then be equipped to apply mathematics in the formulation of problems in chemical engineering. Like the first edition, there are many examples provided as homework and worked examples.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Modelling with Differential Equations in Chemical Engineering' covers the modelling of rate processes of engineering in terms of differential equations. While it includes the purely mathematical aspects of the solution of differential equations, the main emphasis is on the derivation and solution of major equations of engineering and applied science. Methods of solving differential equations by analytical and numerical means are presented in detail with many solved examples, and problems for solution by the reader. Emphasis is placed on numerical and computer methods of solution. A key chapter in the book is devoted to the principles of mathematical modelling. These principles are applied to the equations in important engineering areas. The major disciplines covered are thermodynamics, diffusion and mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, chemical reactions, and automatic control. These topics are of particular value to chemical engineers, but also are of interest to mechanical, civil, and environmental engineers, as well as applied scientists. The material is also suitable for undergraduate and beginning graduate students, as well as for review by practising engineers.

Book excerpt: This book treats Modelling of CFD problems, Numerical tools for PDE, and Scientific Computing and Systems of ODE for Epidemiology, topics that are closely related to the scientific activities and interests of Prof. William Fitzgibbon, Prof. Yuri Kuznetsov, and Prof. O. Pironneau, whose outstanding achievements are recognised in this volume. It contains 20 contributions from leading scientists in applied mathematics dealing with partial differential equations and their applications to engineering, ab-initio chemistry and life sciences. It includes the mathematical and numerical contributions to PDE for applications presented at the ECCOMAS thematic conference "Contributions to PDE for Applications" held at Laboratoire Jacques Louis Lions in Paris, France, August 31- September 1, 2015, and at the Department of Mathematics, University of Houston, Texas, USA, February 26-27, 2016. This event brought together specialists from universities and research institutions who are developing or applying numerical PDE or ODE methods with an emphasis on industrial and societal applications. This volume is of interest to researchers and practitioners as well as advanced students or engineers in applied and computational mathematics. All contributions are written at an advanced scientific level with no effort made by the editors to make this volume self-contained. It is assumed that the reader is a specialist already who knows the basis of this field of research and has the capability of understanding and appreciating the latest developments in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 250 years partial di?erential equations have been clearly the most important tool available to mankind in order to understand a large variety of phenomena, natural at ?rst and then those originating from - man activity and technological development. Mechanics, physics and their engineering applications were the ?rst to bene?t from the impact of partial di?erential equations on modeling and design, but a little less than a century ago the Schr ̈ odinger equation was the key opening the door to the application of partial di?erential equations to quantum chemistry, for small atomic and molecular systems at ?rst, but then for systems of fast growing complexity. The place of partial di?erential equations in mathematics is a very particular one: initially, the partial di?erential equations modeling natural phenomena were derived by combining calculus with physical reasoning in order to - press conservation laws and principles in partial di?erential equation form, leading to the wave equation, the heat equation, the equations of elasticity, the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations for ?uids, the Maxwell equations of electro-magnetics, etc. It is in order to solve ‘constructively’ the heat equation that Fourier developed the series bearing his name in the early 19th century; Fourier series (and later integrals) have played (and still play) a fundamental roleinbothpureandappliedmathematics, includingmanyareasquiteremote from partial di?erential equations. On the other hand, several areas of mathematics such as di?erential ge- etry have bene?ted from their interactions with partial di?erential equations.
