Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores evidence-based practice in college science teaching. It is grounded in disciplinary education research by practicing scientists who have chosen to take Wieman’s (2014) challenge seriously, and to investigate claims about the efficacy of alternative strategies in college science teaching. In editing this book, we have chosen to showcase outstanding cases of exemplary practice supported by solid evidence, and to include practitioners who offer models of teaching and learning that meet the high standards of the scientific disciplines. Our intention is to let these distinguished scientists speak for themselves and to offer authentic guidance to those who seek models of excellence. Our primary audience consists of the thousands of dedicated faculty and graduate students who teach undergraduate science at community and technical colleges, 4-year liberal arts institutions, comprehensive regional campuses, and flagship research universities. In keeping with Wieman’s challenge, our primary focus has been on identifying classroom practices that encourage and support meaningful learning and conceptual understanding in the natural sciences. The content is structured as follows: after an Introduction based on Constructivist Learning Theory (Section I), the practices we explore are Eliciting Ideas and Encouraging Reflection (Section II); Using Clickers to Engage Students (Section III); Supporting Peer Interaction through Small Group Activities (Section IV); Restructuring Curriculum and Instruction (Section V); Rethinking the Physical Environment (Section VI); Enhancing Understanding with Technology (Section VII), and Assessing Understanding (Section VIII). The book’s final section (IX) is devoted to Professional Issues facing college and university faculty who choose to adopt active learning in their courses. The common feature underlying all of the strategies described in this book is their emphasis on actively engaging students who seek to make sense of natural objects and events. Many of the strategies we highlight emerge from a constructivist view of learning that has gained widespread acceptance in recent years. In this view, learners make sense of the world by forging connections between new ideas and those that are part of their existing knowledge base. For most students, that knowledge base is riddled with a host of naïve notions, misconceptions and alternative conceptions they have acquired throughout their lives. To a considerable extent, the job of the teacher is to coax out these ideas; to help students understand how their ideas differ from the scientifically accepted view; to assist as students restructure and reconcile their newly acquired knowledge; and to provide opportunities for students to evaluate what they have learned and apply it in novel circumstances. Clearly, this prescription demands far more than most college and university scientists have been prepared for.

Book excerpt: The Study Attitudes and Methods Survey was administered over a two year period from 1982 to 1984, and the scores on the six scales of the test for the fifty individuals completing the survey were compared. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine whether significant differences existed among the six scales, and if so to examine the relationship of the significantly different scales to first quarter grade point averages for the fifty non-traditional students administered the test. Results suggested significant differences in the scales for Anxiety, Academic Drive, Manipulation, and Study Methods. A positive relationship with high first quarter grade point average was indicated on the scales for Study Methods, Academic Drive, and Lack of Manipulation; no significant relationship between high or low anxiety scores and first quarter grade point average was revealed.

Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between test anxiety and academic performance, as well as how cannabis affected this relationship. The importance of academic achievement is often a burden and a source of anxiety for many students. The current study hypothesized that test anxiety is negatively correlated with academic performance. It was also hypothesized that cannabis mitigates the negative effects of high test anxiety on academic performance. We additionally hypothesized that when cannabis is abused, it can be potentially more detrimental to one’s academic performance, resulting in a lower GPA. Participants consisted of 95 college students aged 18 to 22 at the University of Hartford. Well-established scales and questionnaires were used to measure academic performance, test anxiety, and cannabis use. The results of the study did not show any significance in the relationship between test anxiety and academic performance. It also did not show any significant impact of cannabis on this relationship. On the other hand, the findings potentially highlighted the need to develop guidelines or programs to help college students navigate test anxiety and access alternative resources. In addition, the findings potentially highlighted the need for psychoeducational services regarding cannabis use, as well as education around the various clinical services available for college students struggling with cannabis use. Continuous research on cannabis use would help us understand the impact this substance has on anxiety and academic performance. Continuous steps towards legalization of medical and recreational cannabis use will increase opportunities for such research.

Book excerpt: In the current study, academic optimism (including trust in professors, academic press, and identification with university) and study habits were explored as predictors of two dimensions of test anxiety: worry and emotionality. Using multiple linear regression, surface approach study habits and trust in professors emerged as predictors of worry, whereas identification with university emerged as a predictor of emotionality. Surface approach study habits and trust in professors accounted for 24% of the variance for worry, and identification with university accounted for 12% of the variance for emotionality. These relations held true for female students only. Future studies should continue to investigate the predictive value of academic optimism and study habits in college student test anxiety, as well as continuing to identify other predictive factors.

Book excerpt: This study compares the state, trait, and test anxiety scores of 145 college students with and without learning disabilities against categories such as demographics, general anxiety, test anxiety, and disability experience. This study used a questionnaire and compared answers among groups. The analysis indicated that students with learning disabilities have a statistically significant difference on trait, F(1, 143) = 9.83, p = .002, and test scores, F(1, 142) = 11.97, p = .001, when compared to students without disabilities. This study found that anxiety statistically significantly affects college students with learning disabilities in terms of age, years in school, gender, perception of grades, self-reported anxiety ratings, feelings of control, and Office of Disability experience. This study informs future research regarding many variables affecting college students with learning disabilities.
