Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder characterised by recurrent unprovoked seizures, and affects 50 million people worldwide. Approximately 30% of these do not have seizure control even with the best available medications, hence renewed and increasing interest in the use of dietary treatments to treat epilepsy. These treatments include the traditional ketogenic diets but also the newer modified Atkins diet and low glycaemic index treatment. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to treat refractory epilepsy in children, and requires the dedicated support of a multi-disciplinary team including doctors and dietitians. Dietary Treatment of Epilepsy: Practical Implementation of Ketogenic Therapy provides comprehensive and practical training on all aspects of implementing and managing dietary treatments for epilepsy, with key chapters on assessment, calculations, implementation, monitoring and complications. Edited by a highly respected expert in the field supported by a strong team of contributors, this is a must-have resource for paediatric dietitians and other members of the therapy team.

Book excerpt: The Nutrition and Health series of books has an overriding mission to provide health professionals with texts that are considered essential because each includes: (1) a synthe sis of the state of the science, (2) timely, in -depth reviews by the leading researchers in their respective fields, (3) extensive, up-to-date, fully annotated reference lists, (4) a detailed index, (5) relevant tables and figures, (6) identification of paradigm shifts and the consequences, (7) suggestions of areas for future research, and (8) balanced, data driven answers to patient /health professionals questions that are based upon the totality of evidence rather than the findings of any single study. The series volumes are not the outcome of a symposium. Rather, each editor has the potential to examine a chosen area with a broad perspective, both in subject matter as well as in the choice of chapter authors. The international perspective, especially with regard to public health initiatives, is emphasized where appropriate. The editors, whose trainings are both research- and practice-oriented, have the opportunity to develop a primary objective for their book; define the scope and focus, and then invite the leading authorities from around the world to be part oftheir initiative. The authors are encouraged to provide an overview of the field, discuss their own research, and relate the research findings to potential human health consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of two diets I tried to control my epileptic seizures. No medications seemed to control the seizures I had. Not until I seen the Charlie Foundation present an Introduction of the Ketogenic Diet, did I ever consider dieting would control my seizures. In August 1996 I began the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet controlled my seizure better than any medications I tried. Because of my age (adult) it was hard to seek professional help that practiced the diet, since it is practiced on children only. Dieticians of a Children's Hospital nearby did coach me though the diet. Not until seven years later did I notice that certain foods were being eaten just before I had a seizure, specifically pasta. I began researching the possible cause of seizures and gluten appeared. I looked back on my records while I was on the Ketogenic Diet and noticed I had certain foods before having seizures. Those foods had gluten in it. Gluten sensitivity is becoming more prevalent as it is studied. Being unsuccessful contacting the medical profession I decided to write a book of both diets that helped me controlling seizures. Both diets may even help weight loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive information, both for clinicians and scientists, on the basic mechanisms, clinical features, and therapeutic approaches to epilepsy as an inflammatory disease. Inflammation has been for many years considered as an etiologic player (and a therapeutic target) for a specific group of epilepsies. However, it turns out that this concept underestimated the impact of inflammation in seizure disorders. Many accepted therapies for non-inflammatory epilepsies act in part as an inflammatory drug. The CNS actively responds to acute immune challenges by altering body temperature, stimulating the HPA axis, as well as up- and down-regulating specific sympathetic pathways.
