Book excerpt: In the summer of 1962, Andy Warhol unveiled 32 Soup Cans in his first solo exhibition at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles - and sent the art world reeling. The responses ran from incredulity to outrage; the poet Taylor Mead described the exhibition as ''a brilliant slap in the face to America.'' The exhibition put Warhol on the map - and transformed American culture forever. Almost single-handedly, Warhol collapsed the centuries-old distinction between ''high'' and ''low'' culture, and created a new and radically modern aesthetic. In Andy Warhol and the Can that Sold the World, the dazzlingly versatile critic Gary Indiana tells the story of the genesis and impact of this iconic work of art. With energy, wit, and tremendous perspicacity, Indiana recovers the exhilaration and controversy of the Pop Art Revolution and the brilliant, tormented, and profoundly narcissistic figure at its vanguard.

Book excerpt: A critical primer on the work of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol (1928-1987), one of the most celebrated artists of the last third of the twentieth century, owes his unique place in the history of visual culture not to the mastery of a single medium but to the exercise of multiple media and roles. A legendary art world figure, he worked as an artist, filmmaker, photographer, collector, author, and designer. Beginning in the 1950s as a commercial artist, he went on to produce work for exhibition in galleries and museums. The range of his efforts soon expanded to the making of films, photography, video, and books. Warhol first came to public notice in the 1960s through works that drew on advertising, brand names, and newspaper stories and headlines. Many of his best-known images, both single and in series, were produced within the context of pop art. Warhol was a major figure in the bridging of the gap between high and low art, and his mode of production in the famous studio known as "The Factory" involved the recognition of art making as one form of enterprise among others. The radical nature of that enterprise has ensured the iconic status of his art and person. Andy Warhol contains illustrated essays by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Thomas Crow, Hal Foster, Rosalind Krauss, Annette Michelson, and Nan Rosenthal, plus a previously unpublished interview with Warhol by Buchloh. The essays address Warhol's relation to and effect on mass culture and the recurrence of disaster and death in his art.

© The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade before his death in 1987, Warhol continued to produce mesmerising works at an astounding pace. Influenced by the most prominent artists of the 1980s, including Basquiat, Haring, Schnabel and Clemente, Warhol experimented with a combination of painting and silk-screening to develop an extraordinary vocabulary of images that traversed a variety of genres. The result is a remarkable output, collected here in this companion to a touring exhibition. This catalogue delves into the range of works Warhol was creating during his last years, including his abstract paintings, collaborations, portraits and his final self-portraits. Essays round out this compelling look at an artist whose most fecund period may have been in his last years. AUTHOR: Joseph D. Ketner holds the Lois and Henry Foster Chair of Contemporary Art at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He was formerly director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University and chief curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum. ILLUSTRATIONS 150 colour & 50 x b/w

Book excerpt: To his critics, he was the cynical magus of a movement that debased high art and reduced it to a commodity. To his admirers, he was the most important artist since Picasso. As the quintessential Pop artist, Andy Warhol razed the barrier between high and low culture. Pop disentangles the myths of Warhol from the man he truly was, offering a vivid, entertaining, and provocative look at the legendary artist’s personal and artistic evolution during his most productive and innovative years. It is a dynamic, groundbreaking portrait of the man who changed the way we see the world.

Book excerpt: One of the preeminent chroniclers of the society of the spectacle, Andy Warhol perhaps became a spectacle unto himself, hobnobbing with celebrities and spawning an ongoing hipster scene around his image. As his work has continued to grow in popularity, and as critical commentary proliferates, the depth and ambiguity of his oeuvre becomes clearer, and scholars and audiences alike now see Warhol for the prophetic visionary he was. Andy Warhol and His World presents an amazing selection of Warhol's work from throughout his career--from his early Brillo boxes and silkscreens of auto accidents and electric chairs, to his portraits of Elvis, Marilyn, Liz, Mao and Queen Elizabeth II, to film stills and self-portraits--as well as extensive essays on Warhol and the world he reflected and created.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Question-and-Answer interview was one of Andy Warhol's favorite communication vehicles, so much so that he named his own magazine after the form. Yet, never before has anyone published a collection of interviews that Warhol himself gave. I'll Be Your Mirror contains more then thirty conversations revealing this unique and important artist. Each piece presents a different facet of the Sphinx-like Warhol's ever-evolving personality. Writer Kenneth Goldsmith provides context and provenance for each selection. Beginning in 1962 with a notorious interview in which Warhol literally begs the interviewer to put words into his mouth, the book covers Warhol's most important artistic period during the '60s. As Warhol shifts to filmmaking in the '70s, this collection explores his emergence as socialite, scene-maker, and trendsetter; his influential Interview magazine; and the Studio 54 scene. In the 80s, his support of young artists like Jean-Michel Basquait, his perspective on art history and the growing relationship to technology in his work are shown. Finally, his return to religious imagery and spirituality are available in an interview conducted just months before his death. Including photographs and previous unpublished interviews, this collage of Warhol showcases the artist's ability to manipulate, captivate, and enrich American culture.

Book excerpt: "In this major reassessment, young art historian Rainer Crone redefines Warhol's position in the current scene, avoiding such overworked classifications as 'pop' and 'anti-art, ' and analyzes his works as personal visions of reality ... Crone's incisive critical comments are supplemented by the most comprehensive catalogue of Warhol's works ever attempted: 650 paintings, prints, and objects are fully documented, identified by title, subject, size, and, often, by color. More than 325 illustrations, in color and black-and-white, provide an exhaustive visual record of the Warhol output; a filmography and an extensive bibliography of over 600 entries, including interviews with Warhol and his major exhibitions, furnish a nucleus of reference material that will be invaluable to students, scholars, and critics, as well as to more casual observers of the art scene."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 2005, Richard Polsky decided to put his much-loved, hard-won Warhol Fright Wig, up for auction at Christie's. The market for contemporary art was robust and he was hoping to turn a profit. His instinct seemed to be on target: his picture sold for $375,000. But if only Polsky had waited . . . Over the next two years, prices soared to unimaginable heights with multimillion-dollar deals that became the norm and not the exception. Buyers and sellers were baffled, art dealers were bypassed for auction houses, and benchmark prices proved that trees really do grow to the sky. Had the market lost all reason? In I Sold Andy Warhol (Too Soon), Polsky leads the way through this explosive, short-lived period when the "art world" became the "art market." He delves into the behind-the-scenes politics of auctions, the shift in power away from galleries, and the search for affordable art in a rich man's playing field. Unlike most in the art world, Polsky is not afraid to tell it like it is as he negotiates deals for clients in New York, London, and San Francisco and seeks out a replacement for his lost Fright Wig in a market that has galloped beyond his means. A compelling backdoor tell-all about the strange and fickle world of art collecting, I Sold Andy Warhol (Too Soon) takes an unvarnished look at how the industry shifted from art appreciation to monetary appreciation. From the Hardcover edition.
