Book Synopsis Studia Chrysostomica by : Adolf Martin Ritter
Download or read book Studia Chrysostomica written by Adolf Martin Ritter and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2012 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: This volume comprises 13 papers on John Chrysostom, most of which were published during the last four decades (the first and the last were unpublished up to now). The golden mouth was already the focus of Adolf Martin Ritter's postdoctoral project on Charisma as interpreted by John Chrysostom and his time, completed in 1970 and published in Gottingen in 1972, which served as a starting point and a background for many of the discussions in these Studia Chrysostomica. Since the author is accustomed to placing a lot of emphasis on the discussion with other positions, this collection not only provides far-reaching insights into the actual academic discussion on John Chrysostom but also documents the progress of the author's thinking as far as this Church Father and the chances and difficulties of understanding him are concerned.

Book Synopsis Reading the Way to the Netherworld by : Ilinca Tanaseanu-Döbler
Download or read book Reading the Way to the Netherworld written by Ilinca Tanaseanu-Döbler and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume focuses on the various representations of the Beyond in later Antiquity, a period of intense interaction and competition between various religious traditions and ideals of education. The concepts and images clustering around the Beyond form a crucial focal point for understanding the dynamics of religion and education in later Antiquity. Although Christianity gradually supersedes the pagan traditions, the literary representations of the Beyond derived from classical literature and transmitted through the texts read at school show a remarkable persistence: they influence Christian late antique writers and are still alive in medieval literature of the East and West. A specifically Christian Beyond develops only gradually, and coexists subsequently with pagan ideas, which in turn vary according to the respective literary and philosophical contexts. Thus, the various conceptualisations of the great existential unknown, serves here as a point of reference for mirroring the changes and continuities in Imperial and Late Antique religion, education, and culture, and opening up further perspectives into the Medieval world.

Download or read book Das Patristische Prinzip written by Andreas Merkt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patristic principle demands that theological quarrels be settled by resorting to the church fathers. This volume presents the first comprehensive reflexion on the historical evolution of the present crisis of this ancient theological principle. Focusing on the theory of the consensus quinquesaecularis, the author surveys the development of patristic authority from the 16th to the 20th centuries and relates it to other problems of the Church in modern times such as the crisis of tradition, the conflict between ecclesiastical authority and academic theology, and ecumenism. The concluding chapter tackles the question whether a renewal of the patristic principle is possible and feasible today.
Book Synopsis Orthodox Church - Simple Guides by : Simple Guides
Download or read book Orthodox Church - Simple Guides written by Simple Guides and published by Kuperard. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will help you to appreciate the depth and beauty of the dominant form of Christianity in Greece, Russia and much of Eastern Europe, to understand the tenets, nature and holy days of Orthodox belief, to recognize the physical features of an Orthodox church, and the spiritual significance of icons, to know what to expect and how to conduct yourself during Orthodox services and ceremonies. Orthodoxy is the dominant form of Christianity in Greece, Russia, parts of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Its practices are largely unfamiliar in the West and have remained essentially unchanged since the earliest days of the faith. This lucid introduction outlines the tenets, nature and holy days of Orthodox belief with the Western reader in mind. It describes the physical church, especially icons, services, and common practices, and offers advice to visitors on how to conduct themselves so that they are accepted and feel comfortable. Several chapters concern the life of Jesus and the beginnings of Christianity; others trace the origins and history of the Church, with particular attention to its great champion, Constantine the Great. The present structure of the Church is described in brief, and the split between the Eastern and the Western Churches is related with differences clearly explained. The great antiquity and beauty of its liturgy, its essentially minimal hierarchy and its mystical yet pragmatic approach make the Orthodox religion a powerful medium for its profound and universal message. This deceptively simple volume takes the reader on a journey to the heart of the Christian tradition. Access the world's religions with Simple Guides: Religion a series of concise, accessible introductions to the world's major religions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summoned to the Roman Courts is the first work by Detlef Liebs, an internationally recognized expert on ancient Roman law, to be made available in English. Originally presented as a series of popular lectures, this book brings to life a thousand years of Roman history through sixteen studies of famous court cases—from the legendary trial of Horatius for the killing of his sister, to the trial of Jesus Christ, to that of the Christian leader Priscillian for heresy. Drawing on a wide variety of ancient sources, the author not only paints a vivid picture of ancient Roman society, but also illuminates how ancient legal practices still profoundly affect how the law is implemented today.
