Dabei werden die Termini Profession und Disziplin unterscheidend definiert. Im Anschluss soll insbesondere das Wertwissen berücksichtigt werden, weil es als Hinführung zu einer Ethik in der Disziplin der Sozialen Arbeit verstanden werden kann. Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit liegt der Fokus also auf der Frage, welche Notwendigkeit ethische Betrachtungsweisen für die Soziale Arbeit haben und welche Rolle Ethik heute in der Profession einnimmt. Dabei wird zunächst in die Ethik und deren beeinflussende unterschiedliche Werteströmungen vor dem Hintergrund historischer Entwicklungen eingeführt, um schließlich die Funktion der Ethik in der Sozialen Arbeit zu erläutern und dabei die Rolle der Berufsverbände zu berücksichtigen. Methodisch wird der Frage nach der Relevanz des Theoriewissens in der Sozialen Arbeit wie folgt nachgegangen. Auf die Metatheorie Hiltrud von Spiegels wird dabei zurückgegriffen, da sie als Basis weiterer Betrachtungen dient. Dabei erfährt das Erklärungswissen besondere Beachtung, weil dessen Gegenstand die Theoriebildung ist.

Der Begriff Ethik stammt von dem griechischen Wort „ēthikós“ (das Sittliche) ab und bedeutet im Allgemeinen die „Lehre vom moralisch guten Handeln.“ Hierbei kann jedoch nicht von der einen Ethik gesprochen werden, da es viele Ethiken gibt, die teilweise konträr zueinander ausgerichtet sind. Von dieser alltäglichen Erscheinungsform ethischer Grundsätze sind Ethiken zu unterscheiden, welche in einem professionellen Rahmen thematisiert werden, um Handlungsmöglichkeiten zu reflektieren und legitimieren. So verweist beispielsweise Dollinger (2012: S. 987) darauf, dass jeder, der systematisch auf andere Menschen einwirkt, sich zwangsläufig mit ethischen Fragestellungen befassen müsse. Dieser Sachverhalt ist in der Sozialen Arbeit gegeben, da ihre Akteure entscheidend in die Lebenszusammenhänge von Individuen eingreifen, was eine fachliche Auseinandersetzung mit ethischen Fragestellungen unabdingbar macht.

Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. The first, "Euthanasia and the Termination of Life-Prolonging Treatment" includes an examination of the 1976 Karen Quinlan Supreme Court decision and selections from the 1990 Supreme Court decision in the case of Nancy Cruzan. Featured are articles by law professor George Fletcher and philosophers Michael Tooley, James Rachels, and Bonnie Steinbock, with new articles by Rachels, and Thomas Sullivan. The second section, "Philosophical Considerations," probes more deeply into the theoretical issues raised by the killing/letting die controversy, illustrating exceptionally well the dispute between two rival theories of ethics, consequentialism and deontology.
