Weltweit werden Unternehmen von dieser Entwicklung betroffen sein, insbesondere Betriebe in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die Bevölkerung Deutschlands wird von gegenwärtig rund 82 Millionen bis zum Jahr 2050 auf knapp unter 69 bis 74 Millionen Einwohner abnehmen (nach Angaben der 11. koordinierten Bevölkerungsvorausberechnung des StBA). Eine so deutliche Abnahme der Einwohnerzahl bedeutet zwangsläufig natürlich auch einen schwerwiegenden Rückgang der Erwerbspersonen in Deutschland. Für Unternehmen besagt die zukünftige Abnahme der Einwohnerzahl, dass sie mit einer Schrumpfung und zusätzlich mit einer Veränderung des Erwerbspotenzials in Deutschland umgehen müssen. Das Resultat dieser Entwicklung ist, dass in Zukunft zu wenig nachrückende Arbeitskräfte geboren werden und die Anzahl älterer Arbeitskräfte immer weiter zunehmen wird. Diese Entwicklung stellt in den kommenden Jahren eine sehr große Herausforderung, wenn nicht sogar "die größte Herausforderung" für die Personalverantwortlichen deutscher Unternehmen dar. Ein Anlass für Katastrophenszenarien ist heute aber noch nicht gegeben. Die demografische Entwicklung stellt für Unternehmen lösbare Probleme dar. Allerdings ist es wichtig, dass schon heute die personalpolitischen Weichen für die kommenden schwierigen Zeiten gestellt werden. Die Art und Weise wie Betriebe in Zukunft die demografische Veränderung am Arbeitsmarkt erfolgreich bewältigen, kann sogar mittel- bis langfristig einen nachhaltigen Effekt auf den Unternehmenserfolg haben.

Zdrowomyslaw, u.a., S. 27]. Doch müssen bereit jetzt die Weichen für eine neue Personalstrategie gestellt werden, um nicht von der Entwicklung „überrollt“ zu werden. Eine neue Personalpolitik in Zeichen des demografischen Wandels erfasst alle an der Personalpolitik beteiligten Akteure in einem Unternehmen. Die Träger der Personalpolitik müssen in einem Unternehmen zusammenarbeiten, um diese neue Personalpolitik, deren einzelne Maßnahmen und Komponenten in diesem zweiten Teil der Arbeit beschrieben werden sollen, verwirklichen zu können.

Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird beschrieben werden was unter dem Begriff demografischer Wandel überhaupt zu verstehen ist, welche Faktoren den demografischen Wandel prägen und wie es um die Demografie in anderen Regionen der Welt bestellt ist. Dabei werden Statistiken und Schätzungen verschiedener Institute zu Rate gezogen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird erläutert werden welche Herausforderungen und Probleme auf verschiedene Branchen und Unternehmen zukommen, mit welchen Auswirkungen sie schon konfrontiert sind und wie sie damit umgehen. Sei es nun der drohende Mangel an Fachkräften, die Überalterung der Arbeitnehmer oder die fehlenden oder falschen Angebote an Weiter- und Fortbildungen für Erwerbstätige. Untermauert wird dies wieder von Statistiken, Zeitungsartikeln und Fachliteratur der letzten Jahre. Den letzten Teil der Arbeit bildet ab, welche Problemlösungsstrategien ein Unternehmen anwenden sollte in Hinblick auf Personalmanagement, die Akquisition hochqualifizierter und junger Menschen so wie die langfristige Bindung von Arbeitskräften. Desweiterem wie man mit Arbeitnehmern unterschiedlichen Alters, Geschlecht und Kultur verfahren sollte um optimale Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen für das bestehende oder künftige Personal zu schaffen, damit ein Unternehmen attraktiv für potenzielle Arbeitnehmer ist und erfolgreich am Markt bestehen kann.
