This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is as old as that of the TU Wien. As intended by its founders, the former Imperial Royal Polytechnic Institute worked closely together with industry and business, addressing topics from the very beginning that one would today assign to the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. In correspondence with overall technological progress, the research topics and teaching fields of the faculty have undergone continual, often even revolutionary, development and change. This commemorative volume provides both a historical overview of the evolution of the faculty as well as exemplary highlights and striking characteristics of the developments of the last 50 years in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has an objective and a focus. It provides the reader with: • an in-depth acquaintance with the theory of the firm developed by Erich Gutenberg • an insight into a coherent body of current German research in the theory of the firm. The book is divided into two parts. The first part lays the foundations. It presents Gutenberg's theory of the firm to the English speaking reader. Considering the great importance that Erich Gutenberg has had in Germany and taking into consideration the impact that the translations of his path-breaking three volumes "Principles of Management" have had in France, the Spanish speaking countries, and in Japan, it was felt that it was necessary, on the occasion of his tOOth anniversary, to present a concise summary of his contributions to the theory of the firm to an English speaking scientific community. Six papers present Gutenberg's theory in the light of the theoretical advances that he stimulated as well as in the framework of other theoretical developments like capital market theory, transaction cost theory, principal agent theory, and contract theory. The papers show that Gutenberg's theory is highly relevant for theory and highly influential in the practice of management.

However, the establishment of thereof is closely intertwined with methodological issues. But, What methodological foundations is the discipline built on? The book, which focuses on the field of service innovation, was launched precisely in order to study the discipline's methodological foundations and the need to develop and modify specific service research methods in the context of specific examples.

Book excerpt: Industrial Product-Service Systems (IPS2), which is defined as “an integrated industrial product and service offering that delivers value in use,” has expanded rapidly over the last decade. IPS2 has allowed us to achieve both high added value and high productivity and has enriched our QOL by improving the performance of products and services. We are now struggling with many awkward issues related to sustainability, but IPS2 is expected to be the “philosopher’s stone” for solving these issues. Following the pattern of conferences held in Cranfield in 2009, Linköping in 2010, and Braunschweig in 2011, the fourth International CIRP Conference on Industrial Product-Service Systems, held on November 8-9, 2012, in Tokyo, will cover various aspects of IPS2. Topics planned for this year’s conference reflect the latest IPS2 information in both the natural sciences and humanities and include case studies from various industries. IPS2 is still a relatively new field, so it is important to keep track of the entire context in order to promote more cross-sectional cooperation between multimodal fields and disciplines. The fourth International CIRP Conference on Industrial Product-Service Systems will serve as a vital platform for such collaborations and the discussion of new scientific ideas.

Book excerpt: The first edition of this book appeared in the Federal Republic of Gennany in 1984. and in English translation as "Computer: A Challenge for Business Administration" in 1985. This book. which is a translation of the fourth Gennan edition. has been comprehensively revised. As a result both the character and the expected audience of the book have changed. which is reflected in the alteration to the title. This book adresses itself to issues arising from the research areas of both infonnation systems and computer science. Computer science departments are primarily concerned with the development of EDP techniques. and the business economics aspects remain largely Ignored. The emphasis in infonnation systems departments is placed on the investigation of the business economic impact of the use of already existing systems. This strongly empirical approach is accompanied by a disinclination to consider actual system deSign: this is considered the responsibility of the software houses. This partitioning. however. leaves untapped the considerable potential which could be realized by an interdisciplinary approach from computer science and business economics. An isolated approach neglects both the effects that business economics can have on the implementation of EDP techniques. and the structural impact of EDP on business economics.

No crystal ball is required to safely predict, that in the future – even more than in the past – mastered innovativeness will be a primary criterion distinguishing s- cessful from unsuccessful companies. At the latest since Michael Porter’s study on the competitiveness of nations, the same criterion holds even for the evaluation of entire countries and national economies. Despite the innumerable number of p- lications and recommendations on innovation, competitive innovativeness is still a rare competency. The latest publication of UNICE – the European Industry - ganization representing 20 million large, midsize and small companies – speaks a clear language: Europe qualifies to roughly 60% (70%) of the innovation strength of the US (Japan). The record unemployment in many EU countries does not c- tradict this message. A main reason may be given by the fact that becoming an innovative organi- tion means increased openness towards the new and more tolerance towards risks and failures, both challenging the inherently difficult management art of cultural change. Further, lacking innovativeness is often related to legal and fiscal barriers which rather hinder than foster innovative activities. Yet another reason to explain Europe’s notorious innovation gap refers to insufficient financial R&D resources on the company as well as on the national level. As a result, for example, hi- ranking decisions on the level of the European Commission are taken to increase R&D expenditures in the European Union from roughly 2% to 3% of GNP.

Book excerpt: This book showcases cutting-edge research papers from the 6th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD 2017) – the largest in India in this area – written by eminent researchers from across the world on design process, technologies, methods and tools, and their impact on innovation, for supporting design for communities. While design traditionally focused on the development of products for the individual, the emerging consensus on working towards a more sustainable world demands greater attention to designing for and with communities, so as to promote their sustenance and harmony - within each community and across communities. The special features of the book are the insights into the product and system innovation process, and the host of methods and tools from all major areas of design research for the enhancement of the innovation process. The main benefit of the book for researchers in various areas of design and innovation are access to the latest quality research in this area, with the largest collection of research from India. For practitioners and educators, it is exposure to an empirically validated suite of theories, models, methods and tools that can be taught and practiced for design-led innovation. The contents of this volume will be of use to researchers and professionals working in the areas on industrial design, manufacturing, consumer goods, and industrial management.
