Immer wieder wird eine Stärkung demokratischer Elemente im politischen Prozess der EU gefordert. Insbesondere seit dem Vertrag von Maastricht, in dem die Schaffung einer Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion festgeschrieben wurde, der daraufhin erfolgten Ablehnung des Vertrages durch die dänische Bevölkerung sowie dem Maastricht-Urteil des deutschen Bundesverfassungsgerichts ist eine anhaltende Diskussion um die Notwendigkeit einer Stärkung der Legitimation der EU-Politik und um mögliche Wege zur Erreichung dieses Ziels entbrannt. In dieser Diskussion haben sich zahlreiche Ansätze zur Behebung des Legitimationsdefizits herausgebildet, von denen die meisten mehr oder weniger stark an der Praxis nationaler politischer Systeme orientiert sind. Dieser Umstand und die Tatsache, dass die Grundstruktur der EU in vielerlei Hinsicht von der von Nationalstaaten abweicht, scheinen bei einigen dieser Verbesserungsvorschläge kaum oder nur in nicht ausreichendem Maße berücksichtigt zu werden. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es daher, anhand einiger zentraler Verbesserungsvorschläge die spezielle Problematik des europäischen politischen Systems erneut zu verdeutlichen und die Notwendigkeit einer Loslösung von nationalstaatlichen Kategorien oder zumindest einer Öffnung und Weiterentwicklung dieser Kategorien in Richtung europatauglicher Modelle plausibel zu machen.

We have largely forgotten the struggle to make use of thymos, the part of the soul that, following Plato, contains spirit, pride, and indignation. Rather, Christianity and psychoanalysis have promoted mutual understanding to overcome conflict. Through unique examples, Peter Sloterdijk, the preeminent posthumanist, argues exactly the opposite, showing how the history of Western civilization can be read as a suppression and return of rage.
