Das Hauptaugenmerk soll dabei auf den Maßnahmen liegen, die von den USA in Bezug auf das Pressewesen unternommen wurden. Der grundsätzliche Betrachtungszeitraum soll im Sinne des Seminars, in dessen Rahmen diese Arbeit entstanden ist, bewusst auf die ersten Nachkriegsjahre von 1945 bis 1949 gelegt werden. Der geographische Betrachtungsrahmen umfasst die Gebiete, die zur amerikanischen Besatzungszone zählten und der Übersichtlichkeit halber durch ABZ abgekürzt werden. Zu Beginn wird eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Begriff der Reeducation-Politik der USA stattfinden. Dies sorgt dafür, dass eine umfangreiche Klärung dieses Terminus stattfindet, damit eine in Kapitel 4 stattfindende Problematisierung in Bezug auf das Pressewesen in der amerikanischen Besatzungszone von 1945-1949 vorgenommen werden kann. Die Zielsetzung besteht hierbei, die zentralen Aspekte der Reeducation-Politik herauszustellen, die wesentlich für das Verständnis des Folgenden sind. Daraufhin wird der Blick auf die grundsätzlichen politischen Maßnahmen gerichtet, die die amerikanischen Besatzer zur Umsetzung ihrer Reeducation-Politik eingesetzt haben. Hier sollen genau die Entscheidungen in den Blick genommen werden, bei denen erkennbar ist, dass sie von der Idee der Reeducation beeinflusst waren. Im Anschluss daran soll das im vorangegangen Kapitel skizzierte Vorgehen der Amerikaner mit der theoretischen Konzeption der Reeducation verglichen und kritisch untersucht werden. Die bereits im Untertitel dieser Arbeit dargestellte Leitfrage soll also klären, ob und inwieweit das politische Vorgehen der Amerikaner im Kontext der Pressepolitik im Sinne der von ihnen postulierten Umerziehung zur Demokratie war. Anders formuliert kann gefragt werden, ob die Amerikaner beim Umsetzen ihrer Pressepolitik in Deutschland im Sinne der Reeducation prinzipientreu geblieben sind. Der Fokus soll hier nicht auf die konkreten, durch die Presse publizierten Inhalte gelegt werden, sondern auf die essenziellen Weichenstellungen und Maßnahmen durch die amerikanische Besatzungsmacht. Die Reeducation als ideologisches Konzept soll im Kontext dieser Arbeit also gewissermaßen stellvertretend für die Denkweise stehen, nach der man die Deutschen umerziehen wollte.

Within the new globalizing economy, food became intimately intertwined with waging war, and starvation claimed more lives than any other weapon. As Alice Weinreb shows in Modern Hungers, nowhere was this new reality more significant than in Germany, which struggled through food blockades, agricultural crises, economic depressions, and wartime destruction and occupation at the same time that it asserted itself as a military, cultural, and economic powerhouse of Europe. The end of armed conflict in 1945 did not mean the end of these military strategies involving food. Fears of hunger and fantasies of abundance were instead reframed within a new Cold War world. During the postwar decades, Europeans lived longer, possessed more goods, and were healthier than ever before. This shift was signaled most clearly by the disappearance of famine from the continent. So powerful was the experience of post-1945 abundance that it is hard today to imagine a time when the specter of hunger haunted Europe, demographers feared that malnutrition would mean the end of whole nations, and the primary targets for American food aid were Belgium and Germany rather than Africa. Yet under both capitalism and communism, economic growth as well as social and political priorities proved inseparable from the modern food system. Drawing on sources ranging from military records to cookbooks to economic and nutritional studies from a multitude of archives, Modern Hungers reveals similarities and striking ruptures in popular experience and state policy relating to the industrial food economy. In so doing, it offers historical perspective on contemporary concerns ranging from humanitarian food aid to the gender-wage gap to the obesity epidemic.

Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen auf den Anfang eines unabgeschlossenen Prozesses zurück. Die Befragung gilt nicht den Menschen, sondern den Medien. However, popular culture was more readily accepted, at least among the young, who were the primary target group of the propaganda campaign. The prevalence of Coca-Cola and rock 'n' roll are just two examples addressed by Wagnleitner. Soon, the cultural hegemony of the United States became visible in nearly all quarters of Austrian life: the press, advertising, comics, literature, education, radio, music, theater, and fashion. Hollywood proved particularly effective in spreading American cultural ideals. For Europeans, says Wagnleitner, the result was a second discovery of America. This book is a translation of the Austrian edition, published in 1991, which won the Ludwig Jedlicka Memorial Prize.

Book excerpt: Scholarship on the history of West Germany's educational system has traditionally portrayed the postwar period of Allied occupation as a failure and the following decades as a time of pedagogical stagnation. Two decades after World War II, however, the Federal Republic had become a stable democracy, a member of NATO, and a close ally of the West. Had the schools really failed to contribute to this remarkable transformation of German society and political culture? This study persuasively argues that long before the protest movements of the late 1960s, the West German educational system was undergoing meaningful reform from within. Although politicians and intellectual elites paid little attention to education after 1945, administrators, teachers, and pupils initiated significant changes in schools at the local level. The work of these actors resulted in an array of democratic reforms that signaled a departure from the authoritarian and nationalistic legacies of the past. The establishment of exchange programs between the United States and West Germany, the formation of student government organizations and student newspapers, the publication of revised history and civics textbooks, the expansion of teacher training programs, and the creation of a Social Studies curriculum all contributed to the advent of a new German educational system following World War II. The subtle, incremental reforms inaugurated during the first two postwar decades prepared a new generation of young Germans for their responsibilities as citizens of a democratic state.
