Book excerpt: Charles Dickens, who had wrote several previous plays, collaborated in 1867 with novelist Willkie Collins to create a Christmas play for the holiday theatrical season. The melodramatic plot of the play concerns two boys given the same name at the Founding Hospital which results in unfortunate consequences in adulthood. The play was produced with a memorable cast including the popular actors Charles Fechter and Benjamin Webster. Audiences received it with good support and the play had a lengthy run of over one hundred and fifty performances after which it was transferred to the Royal Standard Theatre. The following year, Dickens traveled to Paris to supervise a French version called "A'Abime" at the Vaudeville Theatre. An American production, an unauthorized pirated version, opened in 1868 at the Park Theatre, Brooklyn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Dickens and the Stage: A Record of His Connection With the Drama as Actor and Critic It has often been said that in gaining a great novelist the English-speaking world lost an almost unequalled actor, and a most powerful dramatist; in other words, that if, instead of devoting himself to the writing of fiction in volume form, Charles Dickens had identified himself with the stage, he would have made upon it, both as performer and as writer, a name second to none in theatrical history. The question, is hardly to be argued. By the interpretation of parts undertaken in amateur performances, and still more notably by the extraordinary dramatic power which he evinced at the reading desk, and by means of which he was able, alone, and unaided by scenery or other stage surroundings, to hold, spellbound, critical audiences, and at his will to call forth tears or laughter, Dickens proved that as an actor he was the possessor of absolute genius. To judge of his powers as a dramatist by the little plays that are fathered with his name would be manifestly absurd. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985. Dickens was a vigorous champion of the right of all men and women to carefree amusements and dedicated himself to the creation of imaginative pleasure. This book represents the first extended study of this vital aspect of Dickens’ life and work, exploring how he channelled his love of entertainment into his artistry. This study offers a challenging reassessment of Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop and Hard Times. It shows the importance of entertainment to Dickens’ journalism and presents an illuminating perspective on the public readings which dominated the last twelve years of his life. This book will be of interest to students of literature.
