Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White electroluminescence (EL) was observed for the first time from diamond-like carbon (DLC) films at room temperature. Electroluminescence was observed by the application of ac voltages in excess of 200 V to a metal-insulator- semiconductor (i.e. DLC)-insulator-metal (MISIM) device structure. For EL applications, three types of the DLC films were prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using a commercially available reactor (Semi-Group System 1000). The plasma excitation frequency was either 13.56 MHz or 100 kHz and the system has a capacitively coupled, parallel plate configuration in which the substrate electrode was either grounded or powered. DLC films were deposited using a source gas mixture of 10 % methane diluted in helium. The critical temperature for obtaining a DLC deposition was found to be a function of the electrode spacing. Using the conventional electrode spacing of 25 mm, it was not possible to deposit DLC films above 200°C. When the electrode spacing was decreased to 14.5 mm, however, DLC films were obtained at substrate temperatures up to 300°C. The optical bandgap of the DLC films could be varied from 2.2-3.0 eV using typical process deposition parameters. In contrast to other reports, the optical bandgap did not strongly depend on the deposition temperature, rf power, or pressure. A reduction in optical bandgap of thermally annealed DLC films was observed, compared to that of the asdeposited DLC films. The films also exhibited photoluminescence (PL) which was observed at room temperature. The EL and the PL spectra were compared. The PL peak energy shifts were observed by decreasing measuring temperature and by changing the deposition power. Periodic oscillations in the PL spectrum were observed when a low optical pumping energy was used; these oscillations were attributed to C-H wagging modes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films 1990 presents the Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and 8th International Conference on Thin Films, held in San Diego, California on April 2-6, 1990. It contains 219 papers covering a wide range of topics related to metallurgical coatings and thin films, including high temperature coatings, hard coatings, diamond films, tribology, and ion beam modification. Organized into 99 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion of a thermochemical model for diamond growth from the vapor phase and an experiment in large area diamond coating using a combustion flame torch in its traversing mode. It then explores the properties of diamond films, preparation of diamond-like carbon films using various ion-beam-assisted techniques, deposition of diamond-like films by laser ablation, and coating of cubic BN films on different substrates. The book examines surface processes and rate-determining steps in plasma-induced chemical vapor deposition, and addition of rare earths to improve scale adherence on heat-resisting alloys and coatings. The reader is introduced to high temperature wear and clearance control coatings, thermal barrier coatings, and corrosion resistant coatings. The book also discusses modification of coatings/surfaces to reduce friction; the mechanics of the tribology of thin films systems; mechanochemical interactions in the tribological behavior of materials; analysis and micromechanical testing of tribological coatings; surface modification using directed ion beams; and industrial equipment and processes. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in metallurgical coatings and thin films.

Book excerpt: Diamond films grown by activated chemical vapor deposition have superlative thermal, mechanical, optical, and electronic properties combined with a very high degree of chemical inertness to most environments. These properties, together with the ability to fabricate films and shapes of considerable size, promise an exciting new material with many applications. Some applications are on the verge of commercialization but many await a few more technological developments. Diamond-like films are already employed in both commercial and military applications. The popular press, as well as the scientific and technological and industrial communities, are increasingly interested in the potential for future development of these materials. Although there are many technical papers and review articles published, there is no Single comprehensive introduction to these technologies. The Scientific Affairs Division of NATO recognized the need and the future importance of these technologies and authorized an Advanced Study Institute on diamond and diamond-like films. NATO Advanced Study Institutes are high level teaching activities at which a carefully defined subject is presented in a systematic and coherently structured program. The subject is treated in considerable depth by lecturers eminent in their fields and of international standing. The presentations are made to students who are scientists in the field or who possess an advanced general scientific background.

Book excerpt: Interest in diamond-like films at NASA Lewis Research Center has been based on potential applications that might advantageously utilize the electrical, optical, thermal, mechanical, or chemical properties of these films. Over the past two years a focussed effort has been established at NASA Lewis to investigate the feasibility of using such films for power electronics devices such as heat conductor for semiconductors or as doped semiconductors themselves. If the diamond like films exhibit high thermal conductivities then applications as a heat spreader to cool semiconductor junctions may be attractive. Doping of diamond-like films as an integral part of a vacuum deposition process may enable cost effective production of a new class of semiconductors. The realization of practical application of diamond-like films will be in part dependent upon the ability to reliably and economically produce diamond-like films having satisfactory characteristics.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: An intensifying interest from the scientific, technical, and industrial community in the new diamond technology can be attested to by the wide range of contributions in this proceedings volume. The papers discuss topics such as the applications of diamond films and related wide bandgap semiconductors and superhard materials. These materials are rapidly becoming economically significant due to their combination of superior properties: great hardness, high thermal conductivity, chemical inertness, high stiffness, high carrier mobilities, etc. Initial commercial products employing the new diamond technology are already on the market. These include diamond loudspeakers, diamond X-ray windows, diamond bonders, diamond cutting tools, and heads for magnetic disks coated with diamond-like carbon. The developments reported in this volume are important not only in terms of their own markets, but, also because they are expected to enable a wide range of other new products and production methods.

Book excerpt: Thin films of amorphous carbon/hydrogen, also known as diamond-like carbon or DLC, are of interest as an economical alternative to diamond in a variety of coatings applications. We have investigated the thermal stability of DLC films deposited onto tungsten and aluminum substrates via plasma CVD of methane. These films contain approximately 40 atom % hydrogen, and based on Auger spectra the carbon in the films is estimated to be 60% sp3 hybridized and 40% sp2 hybridized. Thermal desorption, Auger, and Raman measurements all indicate that the DLC films are stable to 250--300C. Between 300 and 500C, thermal evolution of hydrogen from the films is accompanied by the conversion of carbon from sp3 to sp2 hybridization, and Raman spectra indicate the conversion of the overall film structure from DLC to micro-crystalline graphite or so called ''glassy'' carbon. These results suggest that DLC of this type is potentially useful for applications in which the temperature does not exceed 250C.
