Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dialect Glossary of Over 4, 000 Words and Idioms: Now in Use in the North Riding of Yorkshire Nearly half a century ago the writer began collecting the dialect words which he heard fall from the lips of the old folk at whose firesides he daily sat. In the course of time the list grew until something like five hundred words had been jotted down. About that time a Yorkshire Reading came into his possession. This contained a two-page glossary of about forty words, alphabetically arranged. Dating from that time, the idea of compiling a glossary was conceived. The result is the present work. So far as the compiler knows, no popular work of this character has been published. That a growing desire for such a glossary exists he fully believes. During the last ten or fifteen years the interest taken in the Folk Speech has greatly increased. Many there be who have come to know and appreciate the forcefulness and antiquity of that which, during the past, they unthinkingly, and for want of knowledge, considered as nothing better and nothing beyond the vulgar speech of the untutored country-folk. Latterly, however, a more intelligent acquaintance with the Folk Speech has brought about a new order of things. The discovery has been made that language is subject to the law of change - of fashion if you like. Hence, much which has been judged as vulgar had no better foundation in support of such a verdict than deploiable ignorance. For a moment let us consider the matter from one single standpoint, and this fact presents itself. Much of the early literature, both sacred and profane, proves beyond all doubt that the rude language of to-day was the polite speech of our forefathers. Again and again, in the works of those authors, whose MSS. date from 1400 to 1600, do we find their most brilliant thoughts presented to us in language which for generations has been considered unworthy of a place in polite literature. Book excerpt: “It rained cats and dogs”, “I know where his shoe pinches”, “Yes, it was really a blessing in disguise”… These idioms are often used in common language in our day to day talk or even correspondence. Their usage makes the communication and message to be conveyed quite effective. Dictionary defines idiom as “a group of words whose meaning is different from the meaning of the individual words.” Idiom is a combination of words with figurative meanings. It often creates a picturesque image and that image conveys the meaning. For e.g. ‘where the shoe pinches’ the image automatically creates the image of pain and trouble and the place where there is trouble. Similarly, ‘add fuel to the fire’—it creates the image of fire blazing more and the meaning of aggravation comes out. The following example is widely employed to illustrate the point. Dictionary of Idioms by Mahesh Sharma: "Dictionary of Idioms: Unlocking the Meanings Behind Expressions" by Mahesh Sharma is a comprehensive reference guide that explores the world of idiomatic expressions. Book excerpt: About the dictionaryThere might have been times when we have heard or read something that made no sense to us. That is why sometimes we are encountering idioms. To be able to understand this dictionary, first of all, we have to answer one question - what are idioms?Idioms are phrases that have a meaning that is very different from its individual parts. Unlike most sentences that have a literal meaning, idioms have figurative meaning. A literal meaning is when each word in a sentence stays true to its actual meaning. Figurative meaning is when a combination of words mean something different than the individual words do.The list of idioms is not infinite but it is very hard to collect every single idiom in a single dictionary. Not to mention that language is always changing and many idioms that we have used in the past are now archaic and are changed with newer ones.In this particular dictionary there are around 4000 idioms from all around the world that are more or less used in English language nowadays. In my teaching career many of my students have been asking be about the meanings for many different idioms and why we are using them in the first place. To some of my students it was very easy to give them detailed questions and provide explanations, but unfortunately many of them have still found it very hard to understand and learn new idioms and that is why I have decided to create this dictionary to help all of the ESL students out there.I hope that this dictionary will help you to understand everyday conversations much better and make your knowledge of English language even richer than before Sincerely, Stevan Mijailovic
