Book excerpt: In spite of its high cost and technical importance, plasma equipment is still largely designed empirically, with little help from computer simulation. Plasma process control is rudimentary. Optimization of plasma reactor operation, including adjustments to deal with increasingly stringent controls on plant emissions, is performed predominantly by trial and error. There is now a strong and growing economic incentive to improve on the traditional methods of plasma reactor and process design, optimization, and control. An obvious strategy for both chip manufacturers and plasma equipment suppliers is to employ large-scale modeling and simulation. The major roadblock to further development of this promising strategy is the lack of a database for the many physical and chemical processes that occur in the plasma. The data that are currently available are often scattered throughout the scientific literature, and assessments of their reliability are usually unavailable. Database Needs for Modeling and Simulation of Plasma Processing identifies strategies to add data to the existing database, to improve access to the database, and to assess the reliability of the available data. In addition to identifying the most important needs, this report assesses the experimental and theoretical/computational techniques that can be used, or must be developed, in order to begin to satisfy these needs.

Book excerpt: Over the last forty years, plasma supported processes have attracted ever - creasing interest, and now, all modern semiconductor devices undergo at least one plasma-involved processing step, starting from surface cleaning via coating to etching. In total, the range of the treated substrates covers some orders of magnitude: Trenches and linewidths of commercially available devices have - ready passed the boundary of 100 nm, decorative surface treatment will happen 2 in the mm range, and the upper limit is reached with surface protecting layers of windows which are coated with ?/4 layers against IR radiation. The rapid development of the semiconductor industry is inconceivable wi- outthegiantprogressintheplasmatechnology.Moore’slawisnotcarvedinto 1 stone, and not only the ITRS map is subject to change every ?ve years but also new branches develop and others mingle together. Moreover, the quality of conventional materials can be improved by plasma treatment:Cottonbecomesmorecrease-resistant,leathermoredurable,andthe shrinking of wool ?bers during the washing process can be signi?cantly reduced. To cut a long story short: More than 150 years after the discovery of the sputtering e?ect by Grove, plasma-based processes are about to spread out into new ?elds of research and application [1]—no wonder that the market for etching machines kept growing by an annual rate of 17 % up to the burst of the internet bubble, and it took only some years of recovery to continue the voyage [2].

Laboratory studies of the plasma instabilities generated in microwave-plasma interactions have helped to understand the geophysical experiments. Microwave-plasma research has also been useful in modeling the interaction of lasers and plasmas, particularly in relation to efforts using pulsed lasers to compress and heat plasma to thermonuclear conditions. An experiment is described which investigates the evolution of the parametric instability which occurs with near resonant matching of the microwave frequency and plasma frequency. Near threshold, a finely detailed spectrum of satelite electron plasma waves is observed. These waves break down into a turbulent plasma condition with a marked change in power absorbed by the plasma. The plasma passes through several distinctive regimes of turbulent plasma conditions. At the highest power levels used, there are plasma waves hundreds of megacycles from the driving frequency. The plasma is found to absorb a significant amount of power and heat electrons to high energies. (Author).

Book excerpt: An Advanced Study Institute on Radiative Processes in Discharge Plasmas was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland, June 23 through July 5, 1985. This publication is the Pro ceedings from that Institute. The Institute was attended by eighty-five Participants and Lecturers representing the United States, Canada, France, West Germany, Greece, The Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. A distinguished faculty of eighteen Lecturers was assembled and the topical program organized with the assistance of an Advisory Committee composed of: Dr. John Waymouth, USA; Dr. Timm Teich, Switzerland; Dr. Arthur Phelps, USA; Dr. Nicol Peacock, England; Professor Erich Kunhardt, USA; Dr. Anthony Hyder, USA; and Dr. Arthur Guenther, USA. The underlying theme and objective of the Institute was the enhance ment of scientific communication and exchange among academic, industrial, and national laboratory groups having a common concern for radiative processes in discharge plasmas. The program was organized into four major sessions sequentially treating: the fundamental science of visible and near-visible radiation in plasmas; the technology of discharge light sources; recent and novel methods for the generation of plasmas; and an update on advances in laser-based diagnostics. Each major session culmi nated in a panel discussion comprised of the Lecturers for that session.

Book excerpt: Preliminary experiments were performed to determine the feasibility of measuring temperature in an argon theta pinch tube by the two-line ratio method. Calculations were made showing the temperature errors to be expected and the degree to which various types of thermal equilibrium exist as a function of time and electron density. Time integrated spectrograms were taken and a number of argon II lines were identified for which gf-values are known. Densitometer traces of the films indicated that the line shapes are suitable for the two-line method and an approximate calculation was made indicating a temperature of 35,000K. It was concluded that time resolved measurements would be desirable. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant advances have been made in fusion science, and a point has been reached when we need to decide if the United States is ready to begin a burning plasma experiment. A burning plasmaâ€"in which at least 50 percent of the energy to drive the fusion reaction is generated internallyâ€"is an essential step to reach the goal of fusion power generation. The Burning Plasma Assessment Committee was formed to provide advice on this decision. The committee concluded that there is high confidence in the readiness to proceed with the burning plasma step. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), with the United States as a significant partner, was the best choice. Once a commitment to ITER is made, fulfilling it should become the highest priority of the U.S. fusion research program. A funding trajectory is required that both captures the benefits of joining ITER and retains a strong scientific focus on the long-range goals of the program. Addition of the ITER project will require that the content, scope, and level of U.S. fusion activity be defined by program balancing through a priority-setting process initiated by the Office of Fusion Energy Science.

Book excerpt: Heating in Toroidal Plasmas, Volume 1 documents the proceedings of the symposium held at the Centre d'Etudes Nucléaires, Grenoble, France, on July 3-7, 1978. This volume compiles 52 articles that are thematically grouped in this publication. The first two sets of papers focus on the general theory and topics on neutral beam injection. The subsequent group of papers studies heating at ion cyclotron- and lower frequencies. A bulk of papers compiled in this volume examines lower hybrid resonance heating. The remaining set of papers is devoted to electron cyclotron heating. This volume will be invaluable to physics students and others interested in studying plasma, specifically the method of heating in toroidal plasmas.
