Book excerpt: Through short stories and poetry in both fiction and nonfiction, Samuel Marder paints a vivid picture of his family's life and his childhood, forever shattered by the Holocaust. Their lives in pre-war Romania took a tragic turn when they were deported to a concentration camp in Transnistria for three-and-a-half years. After liberation, through difficult and dangerous journeys, they found refuge in a Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. His gripping stories move from survival and perseverance in the face of brutality and tragedy to hope and renewal when they finally get to the United States.

Book excerpt: Pedagogical Alliances Between Indigenous and Non-Dualistic Cultures examines Indigenous education for authentic intercultural education. It critically reviews various Indigenous cultural and educational perspectives in Western education contexts, addresses relevant meta-cultural concerns, argues for pedagogical alliances cross non-dualistic cultures/religions, and articulates metaphysical approaches to the alliances. Throughout the book, the author argues that methodological enhancement of Indigenous culture can be made by proposing new values that emerge from authentic intercultural interaction, which is transcendental to the binary oppositions of Indigenous and Western education. To do so, the author discovers pedagogical and methodological vulnerabilities of Indigenous culture in Western education systems, and proposes its pedagogical alliances with non-dualistic cultures (such as Buddhist mindful pedagogy, Confucius virtues pedagogy, and Hindu contemplative pedagogy) to overcome the frame of Indigenous and Western cultures for Indigenous education and to strengthen both Indigenous and non-dualistic education. This is the first book to address the issue of why non-Indigenous cultures other than Western cultures have not been considered in Indigenous and multicultural education. As such it is an invaluable text for education academics and post-graduate students specialising in Indigenous education, cross-cultural education, inclusive pedagogy and intercultural education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is presented the masterpiece of St. Thomas — the Summa Theologica — in simplified form. This vast summary of Thomistic teaching which deals with every worthwhile truth from A to Z, from the attributes of God to the zeal of man has been distilled into this little volume. It is, in truth, a miniature and simple Summa for everyman. As its name signifies, the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas is the sum total of all theological knowledge, a vast synthesis in which is unfolded all that can be known of God and man. It is divided into three parts which deal with God, man and the God-man, respectively. It comprises 38 tracts, 631 questions, about 3,000 articles, 10,000 objections and their answers. Obviously all of this vast material is not contained in this small volume. However, an earnest effort has been made by the authors to translate and re-present St. Thomas in concise form for the use of everyman. The Confraternity of the Precious Blood in presenting this volume, aims to do for the Summa of St. Thomas what it has already done for the Missal—to place it into the hands of all men. The millions who have found Father Stedman’s “My Sunday Missal” so helpful and practical for the Mass of the Altar will find “My Way of Life” equally helpful and practical for the “Mass of Life”. St. Thomas begins the Prologue to his great work with these words: “Because a teacher of Catholic truth ought not only to teach the learned but also to instruct the beginners, in accordance with the words of the Apostle: As unto little ones in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat (1 Cor. 3/1,2) we purpose in this book to treat of whatever belongs to the Christian religion in such a way as may tend to the instruction of beginners.” The volume, here presented, is in full accord with the purpose of St. Thomas. It brings his message from the halls of learning out into the market place and into the home. While primarily meant for everyman, it is profound enough for the most erudite. Hence it can be readily recommended to father and mother, sister and brother, to the high-school and college student, to the convert, the study and Newman Club, to the Confraternity class, to the religious and the priest, in a word, it can be recommended to everyone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When first published in 1926 this book aroused much controversy. The theory expounded in the book was that Islamic sources in general, and the writings of Ibn al-`Arabi in particular, formed the basis of Dante’s poem Divine Comedy, the poem which symbolised the whole culture of medieval Christianity. The book shows how fundamental Muslim legends of the nocturnal journey and of the ascension of the Prophet Muhammed appear in Dante’s writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing a new religion, or leaving one’s faith, usually constitutes a significant milestone in a person’s life. While a number of scholars have examined the reasons why people convert to Islam, few have investigated why people leave the faith and what the consequences are for doing so. Taking a holistic approach to conversion and deconversion, Moving In and Out of Islam explores the experiences of people who have come into the faith along with those who have chosen to leave it—including some individuals who have both moved into and out of Islam over the course of their lives. Sixteen empirical case studies trace the processes of moving in or out of Islam in Western and Central Europe, the United States, Canada, and the Middle East. Going beyond fixed notions of conversion or apostasy, the contributors focus on the ambiguity, doubts, and nonlinear trajectories of both moving in and out of Islam. They show how people shifting in either direction have to learn or unlearn habits and change their styles of clothing, dietary restrictions, and ways of interacting with their communities. They also look at how communities react to both converts to the religion and converts out of it, including controversies over the death penalty for apostates. The contributors cover the political aspects of conversion as well, including debates on radicalization in the era of the “war on terror” and the role of moderate Islam in conversions.

Book excerpt: The Augustinian Epic, Petrarch to Milton rewrites the history of the Renaissance Vergilian epic by incorporating the neo-Latin side of the story alongside the vernacular one, revealing how epics spoke to each other "across the language gap" and together comprised a single, "Augustinian tradition" of epic poetry. Beginning with Petrarch's Africa, Warner offers major new interpretations of Renaissance epics both famous and forgotten—from Milton's Paradise Lost to a Latin Christiad by his near-contemporary, Alexander Ross—thereby shedding new light on the development of the epic genre. For advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars in the fields of Italian, English, and Comparative literatures as well as the Classics and the history of religion and literature.

Book excerpt: "And with that, the war had ended. The Lord opened his arms and welcomed the Morning Star. The Heavens and the Earth shook as God was overcome with joy. Hell's mighty Angel had returned. And Lucifer bowed unto the Lord. The Demons and Angels watched in shock, for they had been in battle since the beginning of time. The Cosmos stood still. All was right. All was just" (Kron. 32:5-11, The Dark Book). In fulfillment of the Dark Scriptures, the Devil finally humbles himself to the Lord, and He is to forgive him on the 7th day. However, when Satan was banished from Heaven, God created an angelic soul of death; the only power capable of killing Lucifer (His once prized Angel) and the soul was given to a man. The human being who bears this soul is born and reborn century after century, unaware of his true self, for the Soul of Death will only be awakened if Heaven and Earth are in danger. Further, it can only be awakened by the Muse of Life. Heaven's Devils is a masterful story of the events that take place during the 7 days prior to the Devil's official day of reconciliation with God. In this wonderfully written tale, David Dasilma forces you into the lives of a world famous fashion designer, his beautiful Italian daughter, and a former US Air Force pilot turned New York cab driver. Though at first, these three adults seem unrelated, the entire fate of the Universe ends up resting in their hands.
