Book excerpt: This report presents data in text and graphs on the situation of people with disabilities in the United States in the context of requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. An introduction identifies four reasons for the observed slow pace to compliance with disability-rights laws: (1) ignorance about what constitutes accessibility and reasonable accommodation and the achievability of these objectives; (2) serious defects in federal laws and policies which hamper social integration of Americans with disabilities; (3) failure by local authorities to enforce legal requirements for access and accommodations; and (4) continuing prejudice against people with disabilities. The sections following the introduction provide data concerning demographics, employment, social integration, barriers to independence, and transportation. Individual sections provide key points, an analysis of the data, illustrative graphs, and a comparison/contrast of myths and facts. Data sources are provided at the end of each section. A concluding section notes progress, but also outlines continuing needs, including job training, changes in employer attitudes, elimination of physical barriers in schools and businesses, an increase in the amount of accessible housing, an increase in accessible transportation, and a decrease in the segregation of people with disabilities, particularly the elderly and those with mental retardation or developmental disabilities. Book excerpt: Frequently, people with developmental disabilities are excluded from bereavement ceremonies when a loved one or friend dies, therefore not receiving the special care needed for comprehending their own feelings of loss. Focusing on creating mourning rituals for special needs people, this guide offers specific rituals and techniques for caregivers to use while helping explain death and dying. With more than 20 examples such as the use of pictures and storytelling or drawing and music, these practical tools can substantially lend to the understanding of grief and sadness for intellectually and developmentally disabled adults and adolescents.

Book excerpt: “One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • The Wall Street Journal • Bloomberg Business • Bookish FINALIST FOR THE BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE FIRST BOOK AWARD • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER You’ve never read a book like The Reason I Jump. Written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, it is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one at last have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within. Using an alphabet grid to painstakingly construct words, sentences, and thoughts that he is unable to speak out loud, Naoki answers even the most delicate questions that people want to know. Questions such as: “Why do people with autism talk so loudly and weirdly?” “Why do you line up your toy cars and blocks?” “Why don’t you make eye contact when you’re talking?” and “What’s the reason you jump?” (Naoki’s answer: “When I’m jumping, it’s as if my feelings are going upward to the sky.”) With disarming honesty and a generous heart, Naoki shares his unique point of view on not only autism but life itself. His insights—into the mystery of words, the wonders of laughter, and the elusiveness of memory—are so startling, so strange, and so powerful that you will never look at the world the same way again. In his introduction, bestselling novelist David Mitchell writes that Naoki’s words allowed him to feel, for the first time, as if his own autistic child was explaining what was happening in his mind. “It is no exaggeration to say that The Reason I Jump allowed me to round a corner in our relationship.” This translation was a labor of love by David and his wife, KA Yoshida, so they’d be able to share that feeling with friends, the wider autism community, and beyond. Naoki’s book, in its beauty, truthfulness, and simplicity, is a gift to be shared. Praise for The Reason I Jump “This is an intimate book, one that brings readers right into an autistic mind.”—Chicago Tribune (Editor’s Choice) “Amazing times a million.”—Whoopi Goldberg, People “The Reason I Jump is a Rosetta stone. . . . This book takes about ninety minutes to read, and it will stretch your vision of what it is to be human.”—Andrew Solomon, The Times (U.K.) “Extraordinary, moving, and jeweled with epiphanies.”—The Boston Globe “Small but profound . . . [Higashida’s] startling, moving insights offer a rare look inside the autistic mind.”—Parade

This sym posium was held under the auspices of The Institute for Pediatric Service of Johnson and Johnson Baby Products. It was co-sponsored by The College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Rutgers Medical School, and The In stitute for the Study of Exceptional Children, Educational Testing Service. The symposium was held in the Fall of 1979 in Chicago, Illinois and the participants, including Ph. D . 's, Ed. D . 's, and M. D . 's, represented the interdisciplinary approach which characterized the meetings. The interdisciplinary set of speakers was matched by an equally diverse audience who represented almost every profes sional group concerned with the needs of disabled children and their families. Because of the successful information exchange that took place, a published volume of the proceedings was determined to be useful for others who were not able to attend. To all those who toil to help developmentally disabled children and their families we dedicate this volume. Michael Lewis Lawrence T. The main body of the book covers discussion of the various methods, including individual and group work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disability is the functional inability of an individual to perform any activity in the manner or within the range considered `normal'. These are relatively permanent conditions and in most cases can be tackled only by early intervention and long-term therapy. The accurate diagnosis of a child with a disorder is an important prelude to planning the right programme for intervention and rehabilitation. The book is intended for early identification of such developmental problems in infants and pre-school children. It covers a wide range of impairments, disabilities and handicaps commonly seen in young children. It is meant to enable parents to appreciate their manifestations, prevalence and characteristics. The book recognizes the importance of home-based programmes and contains lists of more than 400 activities as non-formal curriculum for young children. It carries broad guidelines on how to train children for these activities at home or pre-school settings. This book will be of great help to parents and trainers who are searching for suggestions from professionals on not only what training to impart to these children, but also how to train them at low cost and within their home settings. The book also serves as a reference guide for students of disability management or rehabilitation sciences. All teaching objectives and items included in this practical guide are empirically validated and located along a hierarchical scale of developmental difficulty. They are worded in behavioural terms so that trainers can readily start working on the given goals for behaviour change in the children. This book is meant for students and professionals in the field of rehabilitation services for disabled, general or special education programmes, parents of pre-school children, those who run play schools or crèches, non-formal educators, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and paediatricians.

Book excerpt: Video self-modeling (VSM) is a proven and effective method for teaching new or more advanced skills and behaviors to people with autism. The technique uses homemade videos (created by parents, teachers, or therapists) to demonstrate a desired behavior. The key feature of any self-modeling video is that the person modeling the behavior in the video is the same person watching the video. VSM allows a person with autism to see himself performing the very skill he is trying to learn. This is accomplished through careful editing and manipulation of video footage, transforming it into a cohesive teaching tool. And the process is a lot easier than you may think! Seeing Is Believing begins with an overview of the research and science behind VSM and insights into why it is a particularly good teaching method for people with autism and other developmental disabilities. It then explains the process of making self-modeling videos from start to finish, including how to: choose the behavior/skill to teach conduct a task analysis select and use camcorders and video software storyboard video scenes plan and shoot footage transfer the video to a VCR, DVD, or computer edit and manipulate the footage keep track of and interpret data These videos can teach or modify a wide variety of behaviors and skills, such as controlling tantrums, increasing the frequency and length of verbal responses, making requests, interacting with peers, and solving math problems. Seeing Is Believing is a good companion book to Functional Behavior Assessment for People with Autism and Stop That Seemingly Senseless Behavior! For further information on VSM, go to siskinvsm.org. Here youwill find a blog that provides additional advice and consultation via email on VSM methods, sample videos, FAQs, and a discussion forum with professionals in the field. siskinvsm.org will become operational in March 2009.
