Already settlement has overflowed the northern frontier of the belt of supposed limited fertility and many thousands of acres of agricultural land have been surveyed by the Dominion Government immediately north of the North Saskatchewan and in the Peace river valley, and the surveys are being rapidly extended to keep up with the pressure of advancing settlement. While the trend of immigration is turning northward, the eyes of the capitalist are attracted in the same direction. Information concerning the resources of the country once ignored is now sought for. Facts about the climate, the soil, the timber, the rivers, the lakes, the minerals, the fish, the game obtained at the risk of life and limb by fur trader, explorer, missionary, geologist and sportsman, even those facts regarded not so long ago as merely interesting, have now a practical value. The once prevalent notion that the whole of the immense territory north of the North Saskatchewan was a sterile, frost-bound waste destined for all time to remain a wilderness, is now largely a thing of the past, and the opportunities which the latent resources of the silent places of the unexploited northwest afford to the enterprising and adventurous at the present moment challenge the attention of the world. With interest powerfully attracted to the more easterly sections of the country under review by the recent extensions northward of the limits of the prosperous provinces of Ontario and Manitoba, and with easy means of communication with the larger divisions farther west assured, thanks to the progress of the construction of railways northward to Port Nelson on Hudson bay and to McMurray in the Athabaska country, it certainly looks as though the long neglected Northland were coming to its own at last. By connecting with the three thousand miles of almost uninterrupted steamboat communication on Athabaska, Peace, Slave and Mackenzie rivers, and Athabaska and Great Slave lakes, the railway being pushed into the Athabaska country will place the whole of Mackenzie basin within easy reach of the prospector, the explorer, the sportsman and the tourist. The line being constructed to Hudson bay, as soon as steamboat connection is established therewith, will lay the very heart of that alluring El Dorado which we call the Barren Lands, with its herds of musk-oxen and caribou and its mineral wealth, open to the prospector and the sportsman, for, via Chesterfield inlet. Baker lake and the Thelon, there is a splendid, uninterrupted waterway from Hudson bay for a distance of five hundred and fifty miles into the interior. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Development of Canada Much of the early enterprise towards America may be attributed to the search for a North-west Passage to the East, as an alternative route to that by way of the Cape from which Portugal and Spain jealously excluded all other nations. If you look at the map you will observe that the orientation of the continent of North America is most pronounced towards Europe. The two greatest breaks in the Atlantic coast-line north of Florida, are the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and Hudson's Strait and Bay. They lie right in the course of vessels sailing to the west from the United Kingdom and from France. The early English and French navi gators were not slow to explore these openings, and, following them for days, fondly believed that they had come upon the great object of their search - the short route to the East by the West. They were doomed to disappointment; but they had unwittingly discovered Canada's domain, vaster and more valuable than any they dreamed of. They did not dis cover the North-west Passage; and yet, in one sense they did. But it was left to the genius of the British and French races, whom these navi gators represented, to convert, three centuries later, their discovery, with the assistance of a great trans-continental line of railway, into the true north-west passage of the present day. I suppose it is impossible to over-estimate the influence which the fur trade has exercised on the destiny of Canada. At the outset, the exploita tion of the fur trade was the sole raison d'e'tre of the early occupation of the country on behalf of France by the chartered company of the Hundred Associates. It was the cause also of the occupation of the northern and western interior by the Hudson Bay Company. Colonisa tion had no place at first in the French scheme, and was only encouraged, within limits, later on, after the assumption of the affairs of New France by the Crown. Even then, the prosecution of the fur trade was found to constitute a real impediment to settlement; the life of excite ment and adventure it offered demoralised the younger men in the colony, leading them to abandon the work of clearing and to neglect agriculture. But throughout the French regime furs were the most im portant source of revenue upon which the economic existence of the colony rested. The St. Lawrence, with its wonderful series of lakes, and subsidiary rivers and streams, afforded admirable opportunities for pro secuting that trade over an immense extent of country. By its means also exploration was facilitated, and the French obtained at a very early date a much more accurate knowledge of the geography and resources of the interior than would otherwise have been possible, in view of the vast and impenetrable forest that covered the Atlantic division of Canada, and which barred the approach to the fertile prairie regions of the west. The fur trade was also instrumental in opening the eyes of the French to the advantages to be derived from their strategic position in America for securing control of the whole continent. It trained, moreover, large numbers of men in the qualities of courage, endurance, and resource, a circumstance which proved of the greatest value to France in her sabse quent struggles with England for the mastery of the continent. There travel, away from the few railways, is a slow and laborious work of poling upstream or packing over divides. Nor does the seeker after agricultural lands first penetrate the wilderness. The agricultural lands of the Pacific Coast, great in area as they may be, fertile as they undoubtedly prove, are yet covered with the densest, most valuable forests of this continent. Apart from the fact that the immense merchantable value of this timber would render it an act of vandalism to destroy it ruthlessly, there remains the experience that even after fire or logging has removed the trees, a stout-hearted pioneer is required to com pete with the stumps for possession of the land. Even yet these great monsters, ten or twelve feet in height and only a little less in diameter, are to be found occupying conspicuous positions in the gardens and fields of the coast valleys, where they have defied the ranchers, or even in the vacant lots and street allowances of Vancouver, where, having resisted the assaults of the City Council they are ignored only by the real estate agents. So it is that the pathfinder of the western valleys and mount ains is the timber-cruiser, who, following upon the footsteps of the retreating Indians and trappers, first takes possession of the land in the name of organized exploitation.
