Book excerpt: An experimental study of the mode-locking process in erbium-doped fiber lasers (EDFL's) operating at 1.55 microns using multiple quantum well saturable absorbers is presented. The self-starting passively mode-locked laser was constructed in a Fabry-Perot configuration using the saturable absorber as the back reflector of the cavity. Picosecond pulses that range from 14.2 to 38.8 ps were generated using a series of saturable absorbers. The pulse widths were dependent upon the optical properties of the saturable absorber used as the mode-locking element. The output power of the EDFL varied from 0.2 to 6.7 mW and was also dependent upon the saturable absorber used in the cavity. Soliton mode-locking using saturable absorbers was the mechanism responsible for the generation of the picosecond pulses by the EDFL. The long-lived carrier lifetime in the quantum wells was the primary optical property of the saturable shorter that determined the final pulse width.

Book excerpt: Abstract: We report on the generation of conventional and dissipative solitons in erbium-doped fiber lasers by the evanescent field interaction between the propagating light and a multilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) thin film. The MoS2 film is fabricated by depositing the MoS2 water–ethanol mixture on a D-shape-fiber (DF) repetitively. The measured nonsaturable loss, saturable optical intensity, and the modulation depth of this device are 13.3%, 110 MW/cm 2, and 3.4% respectively. Owing to the very low nonsaturable loss, the laser threshold of conventional soliton is as low as 4.8 mW. The further increase of net cavity dispersion to normal regime, stable dissipation soliton pulse trains with a spectral bandwidth of 11.7 nm and pulse duration of 116 ps are successfully generated. Our experiment demonstrates that the MoS2 -DF device can indeed be used as a high performance saturable absorber for further applications in ultrafast photonics.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in fully-stabilized mode-locked laser systems are enabling many applications, including optical arbitrary waveform generation (OAWG). In this thesis work, we describe the development of high repetition-rate fiber laser-based systems for the realization of these applications at 1550 nm wavelengths. To realize these systems, frequency comb sources are needed that are compatible with electric field stabilization techniques, are compatible with integrated arrayed waveguide grating and modulator technology, and have high repetition rates to allow full use of current modulator bandwidths. Erbium-doped fiber lasers are one of the leading options to fill this role. To that end, fundamentally mode-locked stretched pulse fiber lasers approaching 250 MHz repetition rate and soliton fiber lasers at over 200 MHz repetition rates are presented, and the limitations of repetition rate scaling in fiber lasers are explored. Using the 200 MHz soliton laser and an external Fabry-Perot cavity, a low-noise, repetition rate multiplied 2 GHz source is demonstrated. Stabilization systems for high repetition rate sources must also be developed. Carrier envelope offset locking experiments using self-referencing techniques at 200 MHz repetition rate are described. Initial demonstrations towards repetition rate locking to a methane-stabilized HeNe single-frequency standard using difference-frequency generation are presented.
