Book excerpt: ATLAS is one of the two main experiments at LHC with the purpose of investigating the microscopic properties of matter to address the most fundamental questions of particle physics. After the achievements of the first years of running, the potential reach for new discoveries and precise measurements at LHC is being extended by pushing further the energy and luminosity frontiers through three upgrades of the accelerator culminating in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To fully profit from the increased luminosity, two main upgrades of the ATLAS inner detector are planned. The first upgrade was already completed at the beginning of 2015 with the insertion of the IBL, a fourth pixel layer located at just 3.2 cm from the beam line. In the second major upgrade, foreseen for 2024, the full inner detector will be replaced by a completely new inner tracker fully made of silicon devices to cope with the high particle density and the harsh radiation environment at the HL-LHC, which during its operational period will deliver 3000 fb-1, almost ten times the integrated luminosity of the full LHC program. This thesis addresses the study of new n+-in-p active edge pixel detectors by developing two novel doping profile analysis methods to study the radiation damage effects on the pixel detectors performance. These methods are the 3D sims imaging method and the TLM Method. TCAD simulation has been used to simulate the doping profiles, the electrical behavior and the radiation damage. Validating the simulation models with data have been done. Moreover, clean-room characterization, as well as testbeam measurement have been performed to test the different detector designs. In the second part of the thesis, I discuss the observation of the standard model Higgs boson bb decay mode using the data collected by ATLAS during the LHC Run2 at center-of-mass energy 13 TeV and an integrated luminosity 79.8 fb−1 of a proton-proton collision. I contributed specifically to the search of the standard model Higgs boson in VH(bb) production mode. In the VH(bb) analysis we don't have any channel that considers the tau leptons in the final state. I have performed a feasibility study to verify the gain of using the taus in the analysis. In addition, for the VH(bb) analysis I have worked on the multi-jet background estimation in the 1-lepton channel using the dijet-mass analysis method.

The resulting higher occupancy degrades the detector performance of the current Pixel Detector. To provide a good performance during the LHC luminosity upgrade, a fourth pixel layer is inserted into the existing ATLAS Pixel Detector. A new FE-I4 readout chip and a new data acquisition chain are required to cope with the higher track rate and the resulting increased bandwidth. Among others, this includes a new readout board: the IBL ROD. One component of this board is the DSP which creates commands for the FE-I4 chip and has to be ...

Book excerpt: One of the most powerful machines to study particle physics is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Starting in 2024, it will be upgraded to the High Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC) to deliver even more data to measure with high precision Standard Model (SM) physics processes, and to maximise the potential to discover new physics. Higher luminosity implies a higher radiation environment, which poses challenges to the detectors of the experiments. To deal with radiation damage, pile up, and needed read-out speed, ATLAS will replace its current tracking detector with the new Inner Tracker (ITk). The inne...

Book excerpt: The integrated luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (lhc), which is proportional to the number of particles colliding and thus data being collected, is planned to be increased by a factor of 5-7.5 compared to the design luminosity of the lhc by the end of the 2020s. This step is motivated by the potential to measure Standard Model physics processes especially in the top quark and Higgs sector with high precision and discover new physics. However, this upgrade to the High Luminosity-lhc will result in an increased particle density in the experiments, causing a higher hit occupancy in the ...

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern high-energy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential cross-section of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new front-end electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new front-end in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpolation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production cross-sections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method.

Book excerpt: The upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the mid-2020's to the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider will provide large amounts of data, enabling precision measurements of Standard Model processes and searches for new physics. This will also maximise the physics potential of the experiments located at the LHC. In order to record the desired integrated luminosity, the ATLAS detector will face challenges regarding the radiation damage, pile-up and amount of data. To cope with those challenges, the entire tracking detector is replaced by the new Inner Tracker, ITk. In order to develop...

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is planned to undergo a major upgrade, called the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), to fully exploit its physics potential until the end of its operation with an instantaneous luminosity of 5 to 7.5 times the design value (1*10^34 cm^(-2)s^(-1)). Consequently, the LHC experiments have to be upgraded as well (Phase-II upgrade) to be able to cope with the resulting increase in pile-up, data rates, and radiation doses. Therefore, the tracking detector of the ATLAS experiment, the Inner Detector, will be fully replaced by a new all-silicon tracking detector, the Inner Tracker (ITk). While it has been decided that only the baseline design of the pixel part of the ITk will be pursued, which foresees the use of hybrid pixel detectors, it has been worthwhile to study monolithic pixel sensor options as well, whose production is comparatively cost-efficient. Monolithic pixel sensors have recently made their way into particle physics experiments and they were considered as an alternative sensor option for the outermost pixel layer of the ITk. Within the scope of this thesis, a high voltage monolithic active pixel sensor (HV-MAPS) prototype, called ATLASPix_Simple, was characterized and studied regarding its suitability for the use in the ITk.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Higgs boson and its interactions with fermions, as well as the detector technologies used to measure it. The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been a groundbreaking theory in our understanding of the fundamental properties of the universe, but it is incomplete, and there are significant hints which require new physics. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 was a substantial confirmation of the Standard Model, but many of its decay modes remain elusive. This book presents the latest search for Higgs boson decays into c-quarks using a proton-proton collision dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This decay mode has yet to be observed and requires advanced machine learning algorithms to identify c-quarks in the experiment. The results provide an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson decays to c-quarks and a direct measurement of the Higgs boson coupling strength to c-quarks. The book also discusses the future of particle physics and the need for significant improvements to the detector to cope with increased radiation damage and higher data rates at the High-Luminosity LHC. It presents the characterization of the ATLAS pixel detector readout chip for the inner detector upgrade (ITk). The chip was subjected to irradiations using X-rays and protons to simulate the radiation environment at the HL-LHC. The tests showed that all readout chip components, including the digital logic and analogue front-end, are sufficiently radiation-tolerant to withstand the expected radiation dose. Finally, this book describes monolithic pixel detectors as a possible technology for future pixel detectors. This book is ideal for individuals interested in exploring particle physics, the Higgs boson, and the development of silicon pixel detectors.
