Interestingly, many of the advances in MAV technology can be traced directly to annual student competitions, begun in the late 1990s, that use relatively low cost model airplane equipment. The wide variety of configurations entered in these contests and their ongoing success has led to a serious interest in testing the performance of these vehicles for adaptation to practical applications. MAVs present aerodynamic issues unique to their size and the speeds at which they operate. Of particular concern is the aerodynamic efficiency of various fixed wing concepts. Very little information on the performance of low aspect ratio wing planforms existed for this flight regime until MAVs became of interest and the proliferation of fixed wing designs has since expanded. This book presents a brief history of unmanned air vehicles and offers elements of aerodynamics for low aspect ratio wings. Propulsion and the basic concepts for fixed wing MAV design are presented, as is a method for autopilot integration. Three different wing configurations are presented in a series of step-by-step case studies. The goal of the book is to assist both working professionals and students to design, build, and fly MAVs, and do so in a way that will advance the state of the art and lead to the development of even smalleraircraft.

In order to enhance their stealth properties and maneuverability, the possibility of using smart wings and morphing airfoils instead of conventional, hinged control surfaces is investigated. This task requires a fundamental understanding of the interaction between fluid, structure and control system, in a coded form that is fast enough to design with. This DARPA-funded project takes a fundamental approach to understanding the relevant physical phenomena using different models of a flying wing vehicle in flight. We have developed a model that is consistent with distributed control, and have exercised this model to determine what progress is possible in terms of flight control (lift, drag, and maneuver performance) with morphing wings. For this purpose, different modeling levels are examined and combined with a variety of distributed control approaches to determine exactly what types of maneuvers and flight regimes may be possible, and to determine the forces, moments, and deflections that would be needed from the actuation community in order to fly an aircraft completely without the use of discrete control surfaces. This year's progress has been to bring together several elements (aerodynamics, flight dynamics, shape generation, and control) to determine bounds on the required forces, moments and strokes for flying by morphing.

At a higher level, the potential of micro-air vehicles opens up new possibilities in the formulation of military strategies that require investigation. This paper provides an outline of the contemporary technological dimension of MAVs and contemplates how they might be used to enhance Air Force operations.

Vision-based controlled flight and its further developments are geared towards use on MAVs of the future. A test-bed airplane was designed from MAV concepts, and was large enough to accommodate the current commercial components available on the market. Two generations of the vision-based MAV were developed and tested. Each generation had 0.6 m wingspan and used a pusher configuration with a flexible wing concept. The second generation, however, had an improved fuselage and wing design, drive system, and a unique morphing mechanism. Both vehicles were tested and compared during numerous flight and wind tunnel tests. Effects of the morphing mechanism on the flexible wing were analyzed in the wind tunnel using the digital image correlation method.

Book excerpt: Downscaled physical models, also referred to as subscale models, have played an essential role in the investigation of the complex physics of flight until the recent disruption of numerical simulation. Despite the fact that improvements in computational methods are slowly pushing experimental techniques towards a secondary role as verification or calibration tools, real-world testing of physical prototypes still provides an unmatched confidence. Physical models are very effective at revealing issues that are sometimes not correctly identified in the virtual domain, and hence can be a valuable complement to other design tools. But traditional wind-tunnel testing cannot always meet all of the requirements of modern aeronautical research and development. It is nowadays too expensive to use these scarce facilities to explore different design iterations during the initial stages of aircraft development, or to experiment with new and immature technologies. Testing of free-flight subscale models, referred to as Subscale Flight Testing (SFT), could offer an affordable and low-risk alternative for complementing conventional techniques with both qualitative and quantitative information. The miniaturisation of mechatronic systems, the advances in rapid-prototyping techniques and power storage, as well as new manufacturing methods, currently enable the development of sophisticated test objects at scales that were impractical some decades ago. Moreover, the recent boom in the commercial drone industry has driven a quick development of specialised electronics and sensors, which offer nowadays surprising capabilities at competitive prices. These recent technological disruptions have significantly altered the cost-benefit function of SFT and it is necessary to re-evaluate its potential in the contemporary aircraft development context. This thesis aims to increase the comprehension and knowledge of the SFT method in order to define a practical framework for its use in aircraft design; focusing on low-cost, short-time solutions that don’t require more than a small organization and few resources. This objective is approached from a theoretical point of view by means of an analysis of the physical and practical limitations of the scaling laws; and from an empirical point of view by means of field experiments aimed at identifying practical needs for equipment, methods, and tools. A low-cost data acquisition system is developed and tested; a novel method for semi-automated flight testing in small airspaces is proposed; a set of tools for analysis and visualisation of flight data is presented; and it is also demonstrated that it is possible to explore and demonstrate new technology using SFT with a very limited amount of economic and human resources. All these, together with a theoretical review and contextualisation, contribute to increasing the comprehension and knowledge of the SFT method in general, and its potential applications in aircraft conceptual design in particular.

Book excerpt: In the field of micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs), simplicity of design is an important design characteristic. Simplicity in this context implies light weight, a prerequisite for flapping flight, and from a practical standpoint it aids in the manufacture and operation of the mechanism on such a small scale. However, simplicity comes at a price: as mechanisms are simplified they have fewer degrees of freedom, lower controllability, less power output. All of these will effect the ability of the mechanism to generate lift, but the losses can be minimized through proper design and implementation. This thesis describes the design and fabrication of a flapping-wing MAV deriving inspiration from the biological mechanisms of a dragonfly. Dragonflies flap with an inclined stroke plane for hovering flight, which in conjunction with their two pairs of wings, presents an unexplored area of research for MAVs. Small changes in the hovering-flight wing kinematics create large simplifications in their mechanical reproduction. The MAV utilizes these simplifications while maintaining the most important characteristics of dragonfly hovering flight, including passive rotation of the wings, reliance on drag forces to generate lift, and the fluid interactions between adjacent wings flapping out-of-phase. Two successive prototypes are presented, focusing on component design and fabrication techniques. These prototypes allow for easy modification of kinematic variables (phase shift between the fore-and hind-wings and factors that affect wing angle-of-attack) and component variables (most importantly, wing characteristics: size, shape, flexibility), important for future optimization. Initial experimental validation of the prototypes is presented. To facilitate the experimental validation, a mechanical flapping wing mechanism has been designed and fabricated which is able to reproduce the high-stroke-plane kinematics utilized by dragonflies, an ability lacking in present flapping mechanisms. This flapping wing mechanism allows for the measurement of the instantaneous forces on a wing for a particular kinematics, by driving the wing with dynamically similar kinematics in a tank of oil. These experiments will be used in the future to analyze and optimize the lift generated by flapping-wing MAVs.
