Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical flooding is one of the most difficult enhanced oil recovery methods and was considered a high-risk process in the past. Some reasons are low and uncertain oil price, high chemical prices, lack of confidence in performance of the chemical flooding process, long project life, and reservoir and process uncertainties. However, with significant improvement in simulation and optimization tools and high oil price, chemical flooding is feasible in terms of economical and carefully implemented design. Optimization of chemical floods requires complex integration of reservoir, chemical, economics properties and also drilling and production strategies. Many of these variables are uncertain parameters and many simulations are required to capture the effect of the uncertain and decision variables. These simulations could become very expensive and may not be feasible to consider all of the required simulation models. The goal of this research is the development of a methodology for optimization and design of chemical flooding of candidate oil reservoirs. We performed a comprehensive sensitivity study of reservoir and fluid properties that have significant influence on the oil production during the chemical flooding by performing a series of reservoir simulation runs. For performing the reservoir simulation runs, this study used the UT_IRSP platform and the multiphase, multicomponent, chemical flooding simulator called UTCHEM. During the study, UT_IRSP and UTCHEM have been modified by adding new modules, functions and variables. For example, a deviated well module was implemented in UTCHEM to study deviated wells. Deviated well module allows the users to introduce deviated wells in reservoir and import the well locations similar to Eclipse or CMG simulators. A time-dependent well schedule module was implemented in the UT_IRSP framework. This enhancement allows the well placement optimization studies to find the best time to add new wells, and change the status of the well for example from a producer to an injector in order to have an optimum development plan. An advanced post processing module was added to UT_IRSP in order to design, screen, and optimize complex cases for chemical enhanced oil recovery processes such as investigating the well patterns, well spacing, and type of the well (horizontal vs. vertical wells). An experimental design and response surface methodology with integrated economic model were utilized in this study to obtain the optimum design under uncertainties and have an optimal combination of the decision variables. This methodology is based on applying multi-regression analysis and ANOVA (analysis of variance) between the objective function (i.e. dependent variable, which is net present value (NPV) in chemical flooding) and other uncertain and process variables (independent variables). The economic analysis model used the discounted cash flow method to calculate net present value at the economic life of process, internal rate of return, and growth rate of return for each simulation case. Also the optimizer, OptQuest, is launched with a goal of maximizing the mean NPV. The range and the risk associated with the optimum design was studied using Monte Carlo simulation of objective function of the response variable and other independent variables. This methodology was applied for complex chemical flood cases such as well placement, change of status of wells as a function of time or well pattern and well spacing to investigate the best well scenario from recovery and economics point of view.

Book excerpt: The main challenge of chemical flooding at prevailing low oil prices is to reduce the cost. A chemical flooding economic model (CFEM) was developed to evaluate the economics of surfactant flooding and other chemical flooding processes. Using a reservoir simulator and the CFEM, an economic approach to optimization was used to determine the optimum design for a hypothetical U.S. onshore sandstone oil reservoir. The optimum design consisted of a large chemical slug, with a low surfactant concentration and a high polymer concentration, and no polymer drive. The optimization process was found to be dependent on the profitability measure used. Investment efficiency was the preferred profitability measure and is recommended for evaluating and optimizing chemical flooding projects. Sensitivity analysis was used to determine the strategic economic variables for the optimum design and they were, in order of importance, oil price, polymer price, discount rate, and operating cost. Monte Carlo simulation was demonstrated as a technique to quantify the economic risk in the optimum surfactant flood design.

Book excerpt: This book aims at presenting, describing, and summarizing the latest advances in polymer flooding regarding the chemical synthesis of the EOR agents and the numerical simulation of compositional models in porous media, including a description of the possible applications of nanotechnology acting as a booster of traditional chemical EOR processes. A large part of the world economy depends nowadays on non-renewable energy sources, most of them of fossil origin. Though the search for and the development of newer, greener, and more sustainable sources have been going on for the last decades, humanity is still fossil-fuel dependent. Primary and secondary oil recovery techniques merely produce up to a half of the Original Oil In Place. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes are aimed at further increasing this value. Among these, chemical EOR techniques (including polymer flooding) present a great potential in low- and medium-viscosity oilfields. • Describes recent advances in chemical enhanced oil recovery. • Contains detailed description of polymer flooding and nanotechnology as promising boosting tools for EOR. • Includes both experimental and theoretical studies. About the Authors Patrizio Raffa is Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen. He focuses on design and synthesis of new polymeric materials optimized for industrial applications such as EOR, coatings and smart materials. He (co)authored about 40 articles in peer reviewed journals. Pablo Druetta works as lecturer at the University of Groningen (RUG) and as engineering consultant. He received his Ph.D. from RUG in 2018 and has been teaching at a graduate level for 15 years. His research focus lies on computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Book excerpt: Enhanced-Oil Recovery (EOR) evaluations focused on asset acquisition or rejuvenation involve a combination of complex decisions, using different data sources. EOR projects have been traditionally associated with high CAPEX and OPEX, as well as high financial risk, which tend to limit the number of EOR projects launched. In this book, the authors propose workflows for EOR evaluations that account for different volumes and quality of information. This flexible workflow has been successfully applied to oil property evaluations and EOR feasibility studies in many oil reservoirs. The methodology associated with the workflow relies on traditional (look-up tables, XY correlations, etc.) and more advanced (data mining for analog reservoir search and geology indicators) screening methods, emphasizing identification of analogues to support decision making. The screening phase is combined with analytical or simplified numerical simulations to estimate full-field performance by using reservoir data-driven segmentation procedures. - Case Studies form Asia, Canada, Mexico, South America and the United States - Assets evaluated include reservoir types ranging from oil sands to condensate reservoirs - Different stages of development and information availability are discussed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crude oil development and production in U.S. oil reservoirs can include up to three distinct phases: primary, secondary, and tertiary (or enhanced) recovery. During primary recovery, the natural pressure of the reservoir or gravity drive oil into the wellbore, combined with artificial lift techniques (such as pumps) which bring the oil to the surface. But only about 10 percent of a reservoir's original oil in place is typically produced during primary recovery. Secondary recovery techniques to the field's productive life generally by injecting water or gas to displace oil and drive it to a production wellbore, resulting in the recovery of 20 to 40 percent of the original oil in place. In the past two decades, major oil companies and research organizations have conducted extensive theoretical and laboratory EOR (enhanced oil recovery) researches, to include validating pilot and field trials relevant to much needed domestic commercial application, while western countries had terminated such endeavours almost completely due to low oil prices. In recent years, oil demand has soared and now these operations have become more desirable. This book is about the recent developments in the area as well as the technology for enhancing oil recovery. The book provides important case studies related to over one hundred EOR pilot and field applications in a variety of oil fields. These case studies focus on practical problems, underlying theoretical and modelling methods, operational parameters (e.g., injected chemical concentration, slug sizes, flooding schemes and well spacing), solutions and sensitivity studies, and performance optimization strategies. The book strikes an ideal balance between theory and practice, and would be invaluable to academicians and oil company practitioners alike. - Updated chemical EOR fundamentals providing clear picture of fundamental concepts - Practical cases with problems and solutions providing practical analogues and experiences - Actual data regarding ranges of operation parameters providing initial design parameters - Step-by-step calculation examples providing practical engineers with convenient procedures

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to develop cost-effective surfactant flooding technology by using surfactant simulation studies to evaluate and optimize alternative design strategies taking into account reservoir characteristics, process chemistry, and process design options such as horizontal wells. Task 1 is the development of an improved numerical method for our simulator that will enable us to solve a wider class of these difficult simulation problems, accurately and affordably. Task 2 is the application of this simulator to the optimization of surfactant flooding to reduce its risk and cost. The objective of Task 2 is to investigate and evaluate, through a systematic simulation study, surfactant flooding processes that are cost-effective. We previously have reported on low tension polymer flooding as an alternative to classical surfactant/polymer flooding. In this reporting period, we have studied the potential of improving the efficiency of surfactant/polymer flooding by coinjecting an alkali agent such as sodium carbonate under realistic reservoir conditions and process behavior. The alkaline/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flood attempts to take advantage of high pH fluids to reduce the amount of surfactant needed by the chemical reactions between injection fluid and formation fluid or formation rocks.

Task 1 is the development of an improved numerical method for our simulator that will enable us to solve a wider class of these difficult simulation problems accurately and affordably. Task 2 is the application of this simulator to the optimization of surfactant flooding to reduce its risk and cost. The goal of Task 2 is to understand and generalize the impact of both process and reservoir characteristics on the optimal design of surfactant flooding. We have studied the effect of process parameters such as salinity gradient, surfactant adsorption, surfactant concentration, surfactant slug size, pH, polymer concentration and well constraints on surfactant floods. In this report, we show three dimensional field scale simulation results to illustrate the impact of one important design parameter, the salinity gradient. Although the use of a salinity gradient to improve the efficiency and robustness of surfactant flooding has been studied and applied for many years, this is the first time that we have evaluated it using stochastic simulations rather than simulations using the traditional layered reservoir description. The surfactant flooding simulations were performed using The University of Texas chemical flooding simulator called UTCHEM.
