Book excerpt: The articles collected in this volume give a broad overview of the current state of surface science. Pioneers in the field and researchers met together at this Solvay Conference to discuss important new developments in surface science, with an emphasis on the common area between solid state physics and physical chemistry. The contributions deal with the following subjects: structure of surfaces, surface science and catalysis, two-dimensional physics and phase transitions, scanning tunneling microscopy, surface scattering and surface dynamics, chemical reactions at surfaces, solid-solid interfaces and superlattices, and surface studies with synchrotron radiation. On each of these subjects an introductory review talk and a number of short research contributions are followed by extensive discussions, which appear in full in the text. This nineteenth Solvay Conference commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Solvay Institutes.

Book excerpt: Your author decided to write this book about NanoTechnology after being reminded of the fantastic developments of Professor Richard P Feynman who was a professor at Caltech while your author was a physics student earning his BS there between 1947 and 1951. I started studying the pioneering research of Dr. Feynman after being reminded of his famous lecture titled: There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom. This discourse was presented at an American Physical Society meeting at Caltech on December 29, 1959. Feynman considered the possibility of direct manipulation of individual atoms as a more powerful form of synthetic chemistry than the methods used at the time. This became nanotechnology

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide information about performing experi ments at low temperatures, as well as basic facts concerning the low tem perature properties of liquid and solid matter. To orient the reader, I begin with chapters on these low temperature properties. The major part of the book is then devoted to refrigeration techniques and to the physics on which they are based. Of equal importance, of course, are the definition and measurement of temperature; hence low temperature thermometry is extensively discussed in subsequent chapters. Finally, I describe a variety of design and construction techniques which have turned out to be useful over the years. The content of the book is based on the three-hour-per-week lecture course which I have given several times at the University of Bayreuth between 1983 and 1991. It should be particularly suited for advanced stu dents whose intended masters (diploma) or Ph.D. subject is experimental condensed matter physics at low temperatures. However, I believe that the book will also be of value to experienced scientists, since it describes sev eral very recent advances in experimental low temperature physics and technology, for example, new developments in nuclear refrigeration and thermometry.

Individual chapters cover different aspects of the sample fabrication from research and development point of view, present design and construction as well as microscopic and spectroscopic characteristics of single dangling atomic wires and logic gates, and discuss the tools for design of large atomic scale circuit on a surface. This edited volume includes selected contributions from the “International Workshop on Atomic Wires” held in Krakow in September 2014 completed and updated with most current results up to mid-2016, and offers for the first time an overview of up-to-date knowledge in the burgeoning field of atomic scale circuits. The book will appeal to researchers and scholars interested in nanoscience and its various sub-fields including, in particular, molecular electronics, atomic scale electronics and nanoelectronics.

Book excerpt: Molecular electronics requires both profound knowledge of a molecule's structure and functionality on a surface and controlled positioning between electrodes with nanometer-sized gaps. In the first part of this work, a detailed scanning tunneling microscope study of two variants of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) molecules is presented. In the second part, methods of fabricating carbon nanotube nanogap electrodes as direct contacts to these molecules are explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good old Gutenberg could not have imagined that his revolutionary printing concept which so greatly contributed to dissemination of knowledge and thus today 's wealth, would have been a source of inspiration five hundred years later. Now, it seems intuitive that a simple way to produce a large number of replicates is using a mold to emboss pattern you need, but at the nanoscale nothing is simple: the devil is in the detail. And this book is about the "devil". In the following 17 chapters, the authors-all of them well recognized and active actors in this emerging field-describe the state-of-the-art, today 's technological bottlenecks and the prospects for micro-contact printing and nanoimprint lithography. Many results of this book originate from projects funded by the European Com mission through its "Nanotechnology Information Devices" (NID) initiative. NID was launched with the objective to develop nanoscale devices for the time when the red brick scenario of the ITRS roadmap would be reached. It became soon clear however, that there was no point to investigate only alternative devices to CMOS, but what was really needed was an integrated approach that took into account more facets of this difficult undertaking. Technologically speaking , this meant to have a coherent strategy to develop novel devices, nanofabrication tools and circuit & system architectures at the same time.
