Book excerpt: As proposed spacecraft and their associated thrusters have become smaller, technology has been developed to meet the demand for performance measurements for the extremely low force levels produced. For such thrusters, it is also desirable to measure the mass changes resulting from the utilization of propellant associated with either the steady state thrust or transient impulses. A thrust stand and novel data analysis method is presented to make both thrust (or impulse) and mass change measurements concurrently. It is shown that very accurate and repeatable measurements of mass can be made using an existing thrust stand system. Furthermore, it is shown that impulse and mass measurements can be resolved at the same time from a single thrust stand trace.

Book excerpt: A technique has been developed to directly measure the specific impulse from pulsed thruster systems. The technique is especially useful for propulsion devices that utilize solid propellants where a direct measurement of the propellant mass flow is extremely difficult. A torsion balance is used with a horizontal axis of rotation. A thruster is placed on the balance such that the impulse of the thruster firing and the change in mass due to the expending of propellant act in the same direction. The coupled force measurements can then be decoupled to assess the ratio of the impulse to the weight of propellant expended, also known as the specific impulse. A model has been developed to show the utility of the technique for pulsed systems with a firing time less than the natural period of the balance. In this study, a laser ablation thruster using Buna, Viton and Teflon propellants was investigated. Specific impulse measurements on the order of 200 sec have been demonstrated with the laser ablation thruster.

Book excerpt: The objective of the work in this thesis was to devise a means of profiling the thrust of the MIT Space Propulsion Lab's (SPL) Diverging Cusped Field (DCF) thruster and, more generally, other thrusters of similar size and thrust levels. The former SPL thrust stand, which had been used to characterize the BHT-200 engine, was not suitable for the DCF because of its torsional style design. An entirely new, inverted pendulum-type balance needed to be built. The new design employs a vertical arm with the DCF situated at the top and a counterweight placed at the bottom. The vertical arm rotates at the fulcrum through a flexible pivot attached to a base. A horizontal thrust force from the DCF causes the balance to rotate. This motion is sensed by a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) and counteracted by a force from a voice coil. The voice coil's neutralizing force nulls the balance back to an equilibrium position and supplies the thrust value produced by the DCF. The inverted pendulum thrust balance was built from an initial design proposed by Professor Manuel Martinez-Sanchez. Many of the electrical components found on the old thrust stand, like the LVDT and the voice coil, were incorporated into the new one. Additionally, the control software and hardware from the old stand required several changes and updates to be compatible with the new design. After the assembly of the new thrust balance, the issues of calibration and thermal drift during use were also addressed. Once a means of correcting the undesired operational forces and thermal effects had been established, the balance displayed thrust measurement within a range of 0mN to 23mN with an uncertainties as low as ±0.5mN.

Book excerpt: Several versions of a torsional impulse balance have been developed as a new diagnostic tool to study fundamental physical processes in micropropulsion systems. With respect to the transfer of momentum, direct measurements of the transient forces or total impulse delivered can lead to a better understanding and characterization of the efficiency of the thrust that is possible under different configurations. The impulse balance has been designed and tested with a robust calibration system to measure steady state and impulsive forces. The behavior of the impulse balance was thoroughly studied and characterized. An analytical model of the balance's motion was developed from the general equation of motion of an underdamped, harmonically oscillating system. A simple technique has been developed to accurately back out the force as a function of time from the experimental data. The latest version of the impulse balance also manages to resolve changes in mass, which is another key parameter of propulsion efficiency. These impulse balances have been used in different configurations to study many forms of micropropulsion, including the impulses caused by laser-surface interactions and the combustion of Tanner Research, Inc. MEMS-based solid propellant motors.
