Book Synopsis Micro Newton Thruster Development by : Franz Georg Hey
Download or read book Micro Newton Thruster Development written by Franz Georg Hey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Georg Hey summarises the development and testing of a micro-Newton thrust balance, as well as the downscaling of a High Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thruster to micro-Newton thrust levels. The balance is tailored to fully characterise thruster candidates for the space based gravitational wave detector LISA. Thus, thrust noise measurements in sub-micro-Newton regime can be performed in the overall LISA bandwidth. The downscaled thruster can be operated down to serval tens of micro-Newton with a comparably high specific impulse. About the Author Franz Georg Hey works as mechanical, thermal, propulsion architect and technical lead of the micro‐Newton propulsion laboratory of Europe’s leading air and spacecraft manufacturer. The author is participating on major programmes for future satellite and electric propulsion development. The author’s research is performed in close collaboration with the Dresden University of Technology, the University of Bremen and the DLR Bremen.

Book Synopsis A Proposed On-Orbit Demonstration of an Advanced Pulsed-Plasma Thruster for Small Satellite Applications by :
Download or read book A Proposed On-Orbit Demonstration of an Advanced Pulsed-Plasma Thruster for Small Satellite Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USAF Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Electric Propulsion Group is developing an Advanced pulsed-plasma thruster (PPT) technology demonstration for small satellites. The initial flight opportunity was on MightySat 11.2 - a satellite bus specifically designed to advance AFRL-developed technologies and serve as a risk reduction mission for systems required for TechSat 21. This experiment will demonstrate a high performance PPT, making it a viable thruster for various applications such as orbit raising and initiating and maintaining clusters of small satellites. The experiment will also be the first flight of a new micro-propulsion thruster - a miniaturized version of the PPT, known as the micro-PPT (%-PPT). The u-PPT is ideal for very precise attitude control and pointing, formation flying, and for primary propulsion on microsatellites. A novel on-board diagnostic package will be used to assess the contamination of optical and thermal control surfaces as a result of firing the PPTs. Ground-based observations will also be conducted to assess the on-orbit performance and possible communication impacts of the thruster firings.
Book Synopsis The Micro Pulsed Plasma Thruster by :
Download or read book The Micro Pulsed Plasma Thruster written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increased requirement for microsatellites to support such future missions as formation-flying space-based radar, space control, and on-orbit satellite servicing. Devices that can provide precise impulse bit in the 10 micro Newton range may be enabling for a new fleet of 25-kg class spacecraft supporting these missions. In response to this need the Air Force Research Laboratory is developing a miniaturized propulsion unit: the Micro Pulsed Plasma Thruster (Micro-PPT). Like a standard PPT, The Micro-PPT uses a surface discharge across the face of a solid Teflon(TM) propellant to create and accelerate a combination of plasma and neutral vapor. However the Micro-PPT substantially differs from the standard design by using a self-igniting discharge and eliminating the separate igniter and trigger circuit from the thruster. This simplification enables the order-of- magnitude reductions in the thruster size and operational power level required to meet the microsatellite propulsion requirement.

Book Synopsis Propulsion Technologies for Microsatellite Missions by :
Download or read book Propulsion Technologies for Microsatellite Missions written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many near, to mid-term satellite missions have been identified for 200 kg class spacecraft. For many of these applications, significant delta-v capability is desired in order to perform orbit transfer, on-orbit repositioning and formation flying. Several of these systems are in advanced engineering development and could be ready to support flight opportunities as early as summer 2004. A 200 W Hall Effect Thruster (RET) system is being developed to satisfy traditional high specific impulse (Isp) missions such as stationkeeping and orbit transfer, and has demonstrated Isp of 1,370 sec, thrust of 12.2 mN and 35% total efficiency. This system, however, has also demonstrated the ability to produce very small impulse bits, as low as 1.5 mN-sec, for formations flying applications that require precise maneuvers. To complement this system, a suite of miniaturized sensors is also in development that will enable a full description of the integration impacts of METs on Department of Defense (DoD), National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), and commercial satellites. This instrumentation package consists of a xenon ion energy analyzer, electron (Langmuir) probes, radiometric and photometric sensors, and a solar array experiment. The combined package, including the instruments, electronics, harness, chassis, etc., is less than 2 kg total mass - representing a significant improvement in capability vs. mass and cost. The third system in advanced development is a micro pulsed plasma thruster (MPPT) for applications in propulsive attitude control, which can reduce a l50-kg class microsatellite's attitude control system mass by 90%. This thruster, based on traditional pulsed plasma thrusters, weighs approximately 1.5 kg, and has three orthogonal thrust axes, each of which can be fired to produce impulse about any spacecraft axis. MPPT performance is now being optimized, but is expected to be from 25-100 microN, with an estimated Isp of 500-800 sec.
