Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two electromagnetic waves are crossed in a plasma, an electron plasma wave will be resonantly excited, provided the difference frequency of the pump waves is matched to the local plasma frequency. The beat-wave process in a plasma is of great importance in the fields of accelerator physics, plasma physics and fusion energy research. One application of a beat wave is Magneto-Inertial Fusion (MIF). In MIF, a magnetic field could be seeded by beat-wave process and amplified afterwards by plasma compression, to suppress the electron thermal diffusion. Another application is as a new diagnostics technique in magnetic confinement fusion. By measuring the pump waves and the beat wave, localized plasma density and temperature could be deduced. In this thesis, we will present our research on beat wave experiments using power unbalanced CO2 lasers. This thesis is mainly focused on the development of experimental instruments and initial testing results. Important issues in the instrument development, i.e. design of Transverse Excitation Atmospheric pressure (TEA) lasers, high-speed electromagnetic interference immune laser power measurement, will be discussed. First of all, we will present the design and development of high-power TEA and low-power Continuous Wave (CW) CO2 laser system. The peak power of the TEA CO2 laser is over 100 MW. Secondly, we will discuss the development of diagnostics system for the high-power CO2 lasers. A high-speed analog fiber-optic system with 3-dB bandwidth of 35 MHz is developed to measure the infrared laser power in an electrically hostile environment. Thirdly, we will describe the development of a high-density plasma source generated by pulsed arc discharge and the plasma density measurement system. Finally, we will present the beat-wave experiment setup using unbalanced CO2 lasers in the high-density plasma target. Several important issues will be discussed, such as the optics damage problem and the scattered light shielding.

Book excerpt: CO2 Lasers: Effects and Applications examines and summarizes the important applications of the device in different areas of study like physics, chemistry, and engineering. In some parts of the book, the reader is assumed to be knowledgeable in university level mathematics or some specialized area in physics or chemistry. The book consists of 10 chapters where the first two establish the general concepts on lasers and CO2 lasers, respectively. Chapter 3 takes the reader further and presents a comprehensive review of optical components for use such as detectors, windows, and mirrors. Because the CO2 laser is mostly used as a heat source, the theory of laser-surface heating is relevant in the discussion. This theory is presented in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 meanwhile present a summary of observations on cutting, welding, and some related topics. The following chapters discuss the different applications of CO2 lasers in different areas and processes. Some of these applications include in the generation of thermal effect, laser deposition of thin films, spectroscopy, laser photochemistry, and meteorology and communication systems. The text is a good source of reference to both students and scientists in the areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering.

Book excerpt: This study consists of two parts. In the first part a mathematical model for sealed-off CW CO2 laser is developed. The developed model based on the four-temperaturemodel and is developed by modifying the steady CO2 laser model presented by Scott et al. [28]. The equations relating the modes energy verses intra cavity optical intensity in equilibrium are used for modelling. An energy balance equation involving the terms of power loading, optical power removed and power loss in the form of the heat removed through the laser tube walls is derived. The variation in the output power as the power loading is varied is predicted using the model. The predicted results of output power respective to the power loading are found to show the similar response as found experimentally. In second part a sealed off CO2 laser is fabricated using custom-made air-cooled laser tube with internal mirror design and power supply. Both laser tube and power supply are placed in custom made wooden box. The box is especially built for housing the laser components. The cooling of the laser tube and power supply is achieved by using four fans. An electronic circuitry to measure the laser tube temperature is developed. The laser is operated both in continuous wave mode as well as in pulse mode. A maximum power of 12.2 Watts is measured during contiunous wave mode operation at a current of 14 mA. The output power is found to decrease with further increase in current. During pulsed operation, the energy of the optical pulses is found to be maximum at 100 Hz and a decrease in the pulse energy is detected with further increase in the pulse repetition rate. The temperature is found to be the major factor effecting the laser power. Without fans the temperature of the laser tube is found to reach to 85oC in 10 minutes. The output power is also found to drop to zero at 85oC. However with running fans, the maximum temperature that laser tube wall could reach is found to be 55oC independent of the time. The laser power at 55o is found to be 9 Watts. The threshold and steady state voltage at the laser tube electrodes is also measured and is found to be 15640 volts and 8160 volts respectively. The CO2 laser is useful for industrial drilling, welding, cutting and for air ionization or discharge applications. The purpose of this research is to design 14 Watt CO2 gas laser for air ionisation and high voltage sphere gap triggering in the subsequent research.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to develop models of pulsed and continuous wave (CW) CO2 lasers on a personal computer, and to explore optimization of the computed output power using response surface methodology (RSM). The first program is based on a four-level point model of pulsed Co2 laser that predicts the temperature rise and the effects of temperature on the power, energy, and gain of the pulsed laser. The second program, derived from the first, is based on a four-level point model of a continuous wave CO2 laser and calculates the power, gain, small-signal gain, and saturation flux of the CW laser. Both models were verified and extensively validated against published data with good results. Finally, this study explored the optimization of the CW laser model using RSM and found an operating point for maximum power at 10 torr and 4% CO2. Several recommendations are included for upgrading the CO2 laser models and continuing the optimization.

Book excerpt: The concept of pumping a CO2 laser with a radiofrequency discharge at multiatmospheric pressures in order to obtain continuous frequency tuning has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Experimentally 40.68 MHz rf-excitation of discharges between parallel plate electrodes with up to 7-8 kW peak rf-power has been investigated. Emphasis has been laid on how to attain a stable glow-discharge with sufficiently long duration before arcing for integration of enough rf-power in the discharge to reach threshold for laser oscillation. A 10 atm rf-excited CO2 waveguide laser has been developed. With no dispersive elements in the laser resonator and with a 2% output coupler, input rf-power threshold for laser oscillation was 2 kW at 10 atm. Peak output power was 1.5 kW for 7-8 kW input rf-power. The output pulse has the form of a 300 ns duration gain-switched pulse followed by a tail at lower power. An efficiency (input rf-energy/laser output-energy) of 2% has been measured for the gain-switched pulse. The laser has been operated with pulse repetition rates in excess of 1 kHz, limited primarily by the available gas-flow capacity. Continuous frequency tuning between the R(12) and R(14) lines in the 10.4-micrometer band has been demonstrated. (Author).

Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Lasers in Biology and Medicine organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics at the Villa Le Pianore, Camaiore, Italy, August 19-31, 1979. Most laser applications in biology and medicine are highly interdisciplinary in nature, drawing from and pertaining to such diverse fields as the physical sciences ( (bio)physics, (bio)chemi stry) , engineering, the biological sciences (cellular research, photobiology) and finally theoretical and clinical medicine. Indeed the group of participants of the summer school did reflect this diversity both in background and interest. The presentations con tained in this volume mainly fall into two categories: tutorial lectures on the most important general subjects, intended to lay a common base for all participants, and a number of more advanced con tributions, serving the purpose of exemplifying selected but typical applications in their current state of development. Intense inter communication, lively discussion, and here and there even future cooperation were the general aims more than a detailed in-depth discussion of one or the other aspect of this large field. In this sense it is the hope of the organizing committee that, despite the inevitable limitations, a broad and reasonably representative cov erage of the field has been achieved and that this volume may be a valuable aid for newcomers to get a good start into this complex subject area for some years to corne.
