Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. With the present state of development of finite element computer software and high-speed digital computer hardware, an almost unlimited number of solutions to soil mechanics and soil structure interaction problems can now be obtained. These are not limited to linear elastic small deformation solid mechanics, but can be extended to include problems of various kinds involving material and geometric nonlinearities. This book is concerned with the development of numerical tools for solutions of nonlinear analysis problems in soil mechanics.

Book excerpt: This report presents a detailed description of SLAM Code, a large finite element computer program to treat the two-dimensional (axisymmetric or planar) wave propagation problem through arbitrary nonlinear materials and the interaction of these motions with a flexible structure embedded within or on the soil. The basic configuration consists of a general flexible structure embedded within a soil/rock foundation composed of an arbitrary number of material layers or zones, each layer possessing its own, generally nonlinear, constitutive law. The wave propagation from the input locations into the free-field is treated by finite element methods of analysis, including the effects of nonlinear properties of the soil. An additional characteristic concerns the use of non-reflecting or ''quiet'' boundaries. These boundaries are used to limit the size of the required mesh while at the same time minimizing the effects of reflections caused by artificial boundaries of the mesh. Such characteristics are desirable when long duration responses of the structure are desired. 9 refs., 9 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed in the East European countries, China, Northern Korea, Cuba, Vietnam and Mongolia by Academia, Prague, CzechoslovakiaThis book is based on the efficient subsoil model introduced by the authors in 1977 and applied in the last ten years in the design of foundations. From the designer's point of view, the model considerably reduces the extent of the calculations connected with the numerical analysis of soil-structure interaction. The algorithms presented are geared for use on mini- and personal computers and can be used in any numerical method. A special chapter is devoted to the implementation of the model in the NE-XX finite element program package, illustrated with diagrams, tables and practical examples.Besides presenting the energy definition and general theory of both 2D and 3D model forms, the book also deals with practical problems such as Kirchhoff's and Mindlin's foundation plates, interaction between neighbouring structures, actual values of physical constants of subsoils and natural frequencies and shapes of foundation plates.Today, researchers and engineers can choose from a wide range of soil models, some fairly simple and others very elaborate. However, the gap which has long existed between geomechanical theory and everyday design practice still persists. The present book is intended to suit the practical needs of the designer by introducing an efficient subsoil model in which the surrounding soil is substituted by certain properties of the structure-soil interface. When a more precise solution is required, a more sophisticated model form can be used. Its additional degrees of deformation freedom can better express the behaviour of layered or generally unhomogeneous subsoil. As a result, designers will find that this book goes some way towards bridging the above-mentioned gap between structural design theory and day-to-day practice.

Book Synopsis Calibrating Nonlinear Soil Material Properties for Seismic Analysis Using Soil Material Properties Intended for Linear Analysis by :
Download or read book Calibrating Nonlinear Soil Material Properties for Seismic Analysis Using Soil Material Properties Intended for Linear Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic analysis of nuclear structures is routinely performed using guidance provided in "Seismic Analysis of Safety-Related Nuclear Structures and Commentary (ASCE 4, 1998)." This document, which is currently under revision, provides detailed guidance on linear seismic soil-structure-interaction (SSI) analysis of nuclear structures. To accommodate the linear analysis, soil material properties are typically developed as shear modulus and damping ratio versus cyclic shear strain amplitude. A new Appendix in ASCE 4-2014 (draft) is being added to provide guidance for nonlinear time domain SSI analysis. To accommodate the nonlinear analysis, a more appropriate form of the soil material properties includes shear stress and energy absorbed per cycle versus shear strain. Ideally, nonlinear soil model material properties would be established with soil testing appropriate for the nonlinear constitutive model being used. However, much of the soil testing done for SSI analysis is performed for use with linear analysis techniques. Consequently, a method is described in this paper that uses soil test data intended for linear analysis to develop nonlinear soil material properties. To produce nonlinear material properties that are equivalent to the linear material properties, the linear and nonlinear model hysteresis loops are considered. For equivalent material properties, the shear stress at peak shear strain and energy absorbed per cycle should match when comparing the linear and nonlinear model hysteresis loops. Consequently, nonlinear material properties are selected based on these criteria.
