Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development Communication and Leadership in Africa serves as a standard textbook, a reference guide, a repository, and a resource platform for graduate and undergraduate students in colleges and universities where relevant discussions on development are held. The purpose of this textbook is not to discount the continued negative effects of imperialism and neo-colonialism, but to readily understand that for Africa to reverse the pendulum of underdevelopment, there is an urgent need for leaders to take responsibility for their actions. From the understanding of the arguments presented in this textbook, the development of Africa should be futuristic in nature and must address issues that affect the people from the grassroots level, sensitize citizens as to what development means, reduce poverty, and increase healthy living and affordable healthcare platforms along with nutrition, career opportunities, jobs, and most importantly, education and income-earning opportunities for every citizen. This textbook, in its twenty chapters, frowns on poor leadership in the fifty-four countries of Africa and enthusiastically calls for the development of an authentic ideology that is pragmatic in outlook, and will assist both leaders and ordinary citizens to further development agendas that would consolidate Africa's freedom and independence. This ideology must address challenges such as the connection between poor leadership and underdevelopment, class identity, peace and insecurity, corruption and poor governance, income inequality, impoverishment, and the lack of patriotism. As a result of not completing all these prerequisites for development, Africa has continued to fail the test of the comity of nations. This textbook addresses relevant issues that call for every citizen in Africa to rise to the occasion and foster a social identity that will create a common social enclave where Africans not only belong, but also participate with its diverse entity as a formidable characteristic for its development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-imagining Development Communication in Africa is organized into three sections or parts, the first focusing on the past and the history of development communication scholarship; the second analyzes theoretical issues, and finally a third section that looks at country cases. The first part provides several perspectives on the historical development of the field as it pertains to Africa. Some of these look at ideological, indigenous contributions, and the particular importance of gender issues. The second section provides a critique of development communication theory and provides a more cultural appropriate alternative. Additionally, the book applies existing theory to practice in African communities. This leads to the third section of the book which focuses on development communication in some country cases such as in Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, and Rwanda.

Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind within the African region to combine scholarly perspectives from the fields of Strategic Communication Management and Communication for Development and Social Change. It draws insights from scholars across the African continent by unravelling the complementary nature of scholarship between the two fields, through the lens of prevailing governance and sustainability challenges facing African countries, today. This edited volume covers issues that have adversely affected the achievement of goals related to humanitarian upliftment, development and social change for all African nations. Consequently, citizen participation, which lies at the heart of these challenges when considering the question of sustainable governance and policy development for social change in an African context is addressed. To this end, a reflection is also made on various case studies that exist where local citizens do not inform sustainable development programmes, while the promotion of bottom-up development and social change is largely replaced by top-down instrumental action approaches and hemispheric communication instead of strategic communication. Themes explored include: ● Communication for social change, bottom-up development and social movements in the local government sphere ● Strategic communication in governance, planning and policy reforms ● The role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in achieving development of objectives geared towards good governance in Africa ● Public participation, protests, and resistance from 'below' ● Public sector health communications and development ● Media relations, accountability and contested development narratives with the Fourth Estate ● Social media and eParticipation in government development programs.

Book excerpt: Developing countries, especially African countries, face a myriad of problems as they try to counteract decades of national poverty and political ineffectiveness. If these countries are to secure an active role in world politics, they need communication techniques that are both broad and effective. In this book, Dr. Ngwainmbi presents a comprehensive approach to media and communication in developing countries. The author analyzes traditional methods of communication--dance, ritual, caste, religious oracles, and more--and shows how these communication agents, in addition to the basic affordable modern media, create the context for realizing development efforts. The author also examines the new world information and communication debate and raises new questions about its meaning to Africa. For more information, visit www.manigistics.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the negative impact of social cleavages on the development of many African countries. It proposes new ideas on how the development crisis in Africa may be addressed by conceptualizing the underlying problem as a communication issue. In contrast to the frequent neglect of this key factor this book provides a provocative discussion of how communication strategies can help to promote national integration and social, economic and political development. It argues that the activities associated with the communication of national integration must be seen as an all-encompassing task that transcends official speeches in attempts to persuade a disparate population to cultivate national consciousness. Such activities must encompass efforts to persuade leaders to eliminate policies that seek to promote spatial dislocation and cross-cultural interaction, and to arouse the audience to pay closer attention to integrative messages disseminated through the mass media.

But if leaders lead the African people as peasants, instead of leading them as leaders, wouldn’t that be a mistake? Besides leadership, Africa faces many macro challenges. Though, talent is evenly distributed in the world, opportunity is not. But, Africans possess the human and social capital to create opportunities. To give African inspiration space to live and breed innovation and reform. For this to work, a point of reference is necessary. One that: - · - Converges and enables a focused discussion of ideas from three groups of stakeholders · - Encourages a discussion of values and interests for creative problem solving · - Mitigates the perceptive disparity among different groups of stakeholders · - Engages citizens and their conversations in every aspect of the nation building process · - Inspires stakeholders to craft a radiant vision that can be reproduced · - Can be used to craft measures for tracking ongoing communication and development Diplomatic Inspiration suggests ideas for inspiring active and passive stakeholders and for equipping young Africans, the future leaders of Africa, to think differently. It’s not just time for Africa. It has ALWAYS been Africa’s time.

Book excerpt: Until the past decade, development experts shared a conception of how to facilitate development in the Third World countries of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. One essential factor in this paradigm was the role of mass media communication. The media were expected to convey useful information from government development programs to their intended audiences. This dominant paradigm of mainly one-way communication flows did not lead to widespread development in the Third World. Instead, scholars and development planners began to search for alternative models of development and for other conceptions of development communication.
